Good video, thanks for sharing. And I too feel like the genre needs another Evangelion or Gurren Lagann to mix things up and to add new elements others can experience with. Sadly, business is business. Though I could see mecha as a genre go into small hiatus while people get tired of the current idol-fad. 3-5 years forward and somebody just needs to make a really solid mecha series with themes reflecting the recent, bit unstable times. Personally, the only mecha anime of the last decade or so I've had genuine interest in is the Knights of Sidonia. Mostly 'cause it's apparently a good SciFi story too. Heck, even my sister has watched and recommend it to me so I probably should get to it.

Fortunately there are still two shining examples of modern mecha anime that I've recently discovered that are actually very good. Unfortunately, they are both coming from Gundam and not a new IP, but better something familiar and good than nothing at all. Gundam: Thunderbolt Gundam: Origin

Watchin' Miss Kobayashi's Dragon Maid, which is exactly what you imagined when you read that. I don't watch harem anime much but this one's sweet and happy and light-hearted and thankfully avoids all the reasons I don't watch harem anime much. Well... except for the one thing. With the expy of an Aztec god... that keeps forcing herself.... on a twelve-year-old boy. That gets... a bit uncomfortable. God damn it, Japan.
Amazingly it avoids that trope too despite having the "technically she is older than any human" out. The only character interested in her is one of her classmates.
