My cousin was running the race, and another cousin was a first responder.... It could've been bad for me. But there was a bomb threat at the courthouse where a rumour was going around they were going to drop off a suspect. Also, they gave free bruins tickets to 80 of the first responders, my cousin included.
heard this on the way to do groceries this evening. 17,000 voices lifted in song, singing the national anthem is a powerful moment. and for Rene Rancourt to stop singing and let them is even more amazing! Regarding the fertilizer plant explosion near Waco, Texas, someone actually caught the second blast on film, jeesus christ, its ridiculous: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ROrpKx3aIjA&feature=youtu.be Video is safe for work and all, just film of the plant from fairly far away and then a huge blast. The kid in the car freaks the hell out though and is panicking at the end.
I'd seen a clip of that video in a newscast, but it cut off before the chatter at the end and I had no idea what had happened to the recorder. glad they were, for the most part, ok.
MIT police officer shot multiple times and killed, carjacking and then a shootout with police with an explosion of some kind and possible IEDs. One suspect in custody, still looking for the second.
There are now well-investigated, well-sourced reports on most major media outlets. I started this overnight when most media coverage was via Twitter and live TV speculation. A bombing suspect is dead and another on the run while police linked suspects in a shooting overnight at Watertown, Mass. to Monday's bombing of the Boston Marathon. Officials at a news conference early Friday accused suspects of terrorism. A man suspected for his involvement in the bombing died at a Massachusetts hospital following a protracted shootout with police, the Boston Globe reported. "We believe this to be a terrorist. We believe this to be a man who's come here to kill people," said Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis, according to Boston ABC affiliate WCBV 5. U.S. National Guard, FBI and U.S. Department of Homeland Security personnel reportedly joined police in a sprawling manhunt for the second suspect. CNN reported Friday morning that more than 24 agencies were represented in the search. Police say suspects shot and killed a police officer at the campus of MIT late Thursday as the officer responded to a disturbance, setting off a search for two men later found in Watertown about 6 miles west of the school. One suspect died in the ensuing shootout and bystanders told media they heard explosions before police chased an SUV allegedly hijacked by the shooters. Another 15 officers were injured in the Watertown shootout, one critically, the Globe reported. NBC News early this morning reported police found explosives and a pressure cooker at the shooting similar to home-made bombs authorities say were used in the Marathon bombing. Law enforcement and military officials were still searching Watertown with bomb-detecting dogs into Friday morning. UPDATE, 2:50 a.m. PST: No vehicles are allowed in or out of Watertown. Police say bus, light rail and subway service in Boston are suspended until further notice. Police and FBI searches appear centered around Arsenal Street in Watertown. Beth Israel Medical Center employees told Associated Press that they treated a man who suffered innumerable gunshot wounds and possible blast-related wounds. The man reportedly died despite efforts to resuscitate. UPDATE, 7:50 a.m. PST: University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth was on lockdown, according to Huffington Post, after the school confirmed suspect in shooting, bombing is registered there as a student. Meanwhile, FBI searched homes early Friday in Watertown as the manhunt continued. Police told media they were searching for a grey 1999 Honda CRV in connection to the search before finding the vehicle unoccupied. UPDATE, 8 a.m. PST: Associated Press citing police identified suspects as Russians Tamerlan Tsarnaev, killed overnight, and his brother Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. Boston Globe citing unconfirmed information from unnamed source reports suspect may be wearing explosive vest. Commissioner Davis now urging all of Boston — not just Watertown — to stay indoors as the search continues. UPDATE, 8:45 a.m. PST: Uncle of suspects in bombing, shooting, Ruslan Tsarni, told media his family — Russian immigrants of Chechen ethnicity — is "ashamed" of actions of Tsarnaev brothers. "If you're alive, turn yourself in," Tsarni said. Chechnya president Ramzan Kadyrov in a statement criticized law enforcement's handling of the shootout. "It would have made sense to arrest him and carry out an investigation, clarify all the circumstances and his degree of guilt. Evidently, the security services needed a result at any price in order to calm the populace," Kadyrov said in Quartz's translation of the president's Instagram statement. Kadyrov said attempting to link the bombings believed to be carried out by the Tsarnaevs to Chechnya would be "futile." "They grew up in the USA, their viewpoints and beliefs were formed there. You must look for the roots of [their] evil in America.," Kadyrov said. Tsarni said the brothers, born in Kyrgyzstan, would have been radicalized in the U.S. UPDATE, 3:20 p.m. PST: After hours of police and federal authorities searching door to door for a suspect in Monday's bombing, media reported city and state officials had ended the lockdown on Boston with public transit slated to reopen today. Authorities told the WSJ no arrests had been made. This is like some Grand Theft Auto bullshit. Carjacking an SUV and throwing explosives at pursuing police? Holy shit.
Holy Fuck, my state is going to Hell. My first responder cousin is out there with a freakin' Ballistic vest patrolling watertown
The entire city is locked down. No one's getting in or out. They know the one suspect is inside somewhere and they're going to find him.
I would never have thought of linking this to Chechnya until their president got so strident in proclaiming his innocence. He doth protest to much.
I'd be defensive too if citizens of the nation with the world's largest military and a proven history of military occupation were pointing fingers at my country that had already experienced two wars since its official formation in 1991. And suffered terrorism or civil unrest regularly since the 1800s.
No one pointed a finger as far as I am aware before he released his protests, and Chechnya has a horrible track record through out history. And why you think Red China is going occupy Chechnya over this has me flabbergasted. Are The Chinese citizens really pointing fingers at Chechnya and talking war? what a surprise, guess no one really likes terrorists after all.
I believe people are pointing fingers in the mass media: http://usat.ly/15r8g0y http://bit.ly/17M5Zwa And in the social media: https://twitter.com/MrPooni/status/325226662692274177/photo/1 (although these good folks mistakenly call Chechnya the Czech Republic.) And by 9 a.m., PST, incriminating backgrounder shits like this were already hitting the Internet fan. To clarify, I agree the country has a terrible track record. They're plagued by politically and religiously-motivated terrorism in a volatile region. But I also can understand why Chechnyan officials would be like NOT US when looking down the barrel of a fully-loaded, Islam-hatin' Amurica. As for the China bit — wait, what? I hadn't read about Chinese occupation.
Not all bad news from Boston today. Here are some candid captions from an apparently resilient and compassionate people.
