Ugh. "The player IS the Soulless One". Okay, so the entire game is made up of soulless people. I hate when they try to make a single player story in an MMO, that EVERYONE DOES.
Definitely a pet peeve of mine as well. The Guild Wars 2 personal story quests, as cool as they are, make me cringe this way too. (Also, some meh voice acting and ridiculous costumes on the females but that's a story for another thread.)
Personally I like it. Even if it's a bit silly that everyone goes through the same story I've found that it makes me enjoy leveling much more. One of the reason I've been enjoying both swtor and secret world as much as I have.
What bugs me is that they try to pretend you're a unique snowflake, but EVERYONE IS THE EXACT SAME SNOWFLAKE. MMOs are not single player games. In an MMO, you're another dude, working with other dudes, doing dude stuff. They need to embrace that instead of pretending the rest of the people running around the world don't actually exist.
I agree. This game is becoming less and less appealing to me. Especially since they seem to be going down the cookie cutter theme park MMO route.
Yeah, I understand why it bugs you, and part of me do agree. But when it comes down to it the addition of single player story to MMOs have made them more enjoyable for me.
I would disagree, if only for the fact that I have yet to see a single idea for a story in an MMO that is unique to each and every player. While it could be argued that players could be given more choices, it would still feel hollow in the end because the developers can only make so many special instances for their special little snowflakes. Not to mention they must cater to the general public which means, a lack of depth, choices and intelligent gameplay are a given.
I think what I would prefer is a story that wastes no time with the illusion that you're some "chosen one" or the only one who can do this thing or whatever. A story that says "you're another cog in the machine working towards x or killing y" and puts you through a "boot camp" type scenario or something similar wouldn't be bad imo. I'm not against single player quests or story lines in MMORPGs, just ones that paint some ridiculous illusion that breaks immersion by creating a huge continuity error.
While that may be interesting, the average MMO gamer would complain bitterly and the game would be a flop.
The majority of people are stupid. That's life. A logical game would not perform well. Alas. The story should be made by the players, not have every player run through a series of quests. If they want players to do that, they should make a single player game tie-in. Maybe that's my old P&P-raised, MUD-playing ass talking.
For all the boring spreadsheet-ness, that is one thing that EVE definitely has going for it. Hopefully Star Citizen will too, and add in the fun bits lol.
Eve isn't a bad game, I guess my problem is that it definitely requires a certain type of personality and a LOT of patience because of the way the combat and everything is.
EvE is like having a second job that you pay for. And this is coming from someone who was a director in a big time trading corp, and later alliance, as well as a pirate/.0 alliance fighter back in the GOON vs BOB days.
