probably why the series where the tech on both sides is roughly equivalent are better because it's more about the pilots then. or later in some of the series where the margin in tech is smaller. like with the rx-78. I think from the gouf on zeons suits are on par or superior to the rx-78 but the difference is the pilot. especially later in the war alot of zeons pilots haven't even finished training.
Comparing to air force pilot training, ideally you'd be having really, really strict qualifications for getting accepted as cadet and you'd have a really large portion of age group as volunteers so there's enough to choose from - and then you'd choose more cadets than you need to and have a long training over which, say, 50% of the lowest performing ones are transferred to various high level support tasks and only the best of cadets actually enter service as pilots. And of course you'd be constantly building up a healthy reserve of pilots. This turned the other way round means that if you're in a rush to recruit a lot of pilots you'll be accepting more people than you'd like, this can ultimately sap the pool of applicants so you have less to choose from. Also, because your training time is squeezed you don't have time to see who is performing better and so and worst, people are not having time to internalize what they're being taught. Specialist tasks often take years of actual 'field' experience from various things, it's not like you can just cram up all possible situations to a theme week and expect people to perform as well as a group that were trained rigorously for 3 years before they were considered having passed training and then trained some more. To me series where someone is ridiculously overpowered are not fun. In life in general I think what makes things interesting is the scarcity of resources, the fact that life is difficult and you can't do everything at once and if you pick a wrong fight you'll get your ass kicked.
The main reason why amuro was as good as he was is because he was a newtype and had the gundam. If amuro had been thrown into a zaku it would have been a huge difference. You just can't compare a zaku to a gundam. The only reason char's zaku did as good was because it was highly modified. Still no where near as good as the gundam though. Beam rifle weapons also made a huge difference as he only needed one shot unlike a zaku with its 120mm rifle. Beam saber had a huge advantage in reach. He could take shit loads of 120mm rounds with the gundam shield. Then the fact that he was a newtype and could telepathically sense what was going on around him. Basically he had the stackpole shield the entire show as well. I also hate the fuck out of amuro. That Fucking pos killed LaLa Sune. Motherfucker should have been shot into a toilet or napkin.
tbh I would much prefer someone did an anime version of this one's pretty neat too because, why not? I'm pretty sure he's carrying mead. Why else would he be made of wood?
Finally it looks like we're getting a decent film of Kalevala... Kalevala, old prehistoric folklore has stories of men who's strength was measured in by their 'singing' - however, it was not any singing, their 'singing' could animate objects, create ships and so forth and an epic scene has the Väinämöinen, a person involved with creation of Earth Spoiler: parts of Kalevala's plot battle it out by singing with his challenger and nearly kills the challenger with his song. There's also a legendary smith who tries to impress the mother of a fair lady by making elaborate gifts, among them a warship that doesn't require crew but was flawed in that it would go to war on it's own and a great bow that never missed but also was flawed in that it would attack people randomly. The ultimate creation is one of the coolest artifacts in any fantasy, Sampo - an object that multiplies any raw material you insert into it. In Kalevala the epic the heroes later recognize the true potential of Sampo after it was given as a dowry and go to war against 'Hag of North' to reclaim it. Among other interesting happenings Väinämöinen is swallowed by Antero Vipunen as he seeks the knowledge of ship singing (creation of sea faring ship via singing), Antero Vipunen is an ancient entity which is described as being mechanical and very wise and it tricks Väinämöinen and is able to swallow him whole.
Dunno, don't really know how the bard really works. I always took that 'singing' was in fact the process of casting a spell or that it was a metaphora for template if you're going for the ancient technological interpretation, depending on how one wants to interpret it.
