There's a major difference. Capitalism allows you to work less and buy shit and do stuff if you can afford to.

Nanny State / State Slavery means that it is illegal to do anything that is against the economic interests of the Society. Police will storm your apartment, break your shit and put you in jail for not eating your salad and eating something that's detrimental to your health.

What's really confusing is that we share this spaceship called Earth and we don't know what the fuck is out there. I can't tell if we will survive without some sort of totalitarianism that is a mix of technocracy, militarism and expansionism. If I can take a pick I'd rather it not being a caste or class society and I wouldn't mind that people had lives actually worth living as opposed to trying to stay alive so hard that life becomes less appealing alternative.

I suppose that's the biggest dilemma, the ultimate one - how far are a given people willing to go just to stay alive. Because, that's the kind of shit that counts in the big game.

Nah, thinking beyond the mere form in which economy is organized and thinking about the big picture.

Capitalism simply means that we have prices for everything and if capitalism is functioning properly these prices should contain information that can be used to calculate efficiency for available choices such as which engine to use in a vehicle or which type of transport to use.

Since capitalism rarely works optimally we can't really make such decisions reliably on civilization level. We could easily use alternative methods for determining the cost of a choice, depending on what was important for a given situation: amount of labor, quality of labor, amount of resources, maximum potential capacity per time unit, maximum available current capacity per time unit,..

It all boils down to how survivalist <--> self expressionist civilization you're running. In other words, how much resources go to jet skis, make ups, fashionable clothes, bubble baths and luxury goods and services as opposed to resources being spent on homeworld defense and space colonization.

Also, think of how many megatons of resources are being mixed up and discarded because currently capitalism suggests it's not 'efficient' to collect and reuse them and that it's somehow more efficient to prospect, mine, process and transport those resources.

 

LOL, I love it when people bitch about recycling, it is funny. On the Industrial scale of things every milligram of extra material and resources is attempted to be recycled. It is a misconception that they do things like mine Al to make things like cans. Now that doesn't mean there isn't waste just that from the big corporate standpoint recycling pads the bottom line in two big ways, first tax credits/subsidies/green credits, and the other is most of the time they are selling something they would otherwise have to pay to dispose of, like McDonalds who uses their old used frying grease to power vehicles. Now the average person world wide waste is super high, and here in the US it is so high it makes me cry to think about it. That is where the work needs to be done.

 

I wasn't referring to corporations, I was specifically talking about how common people dump their cars, fridges, plastics and everything else to landfills where they all get mixed up. The sheer volume of metals and plastics dumped by households is counted in megatons I think. Plastic for instance would be easy to recycle. Just the amount of gold being dumped with electronics is significant. Even when there's a fucking container for that stuff people still toss them all in the "all the rest" container.

Sometimes it is reality that those containers are not available or they're inconveniently far away so it's a lot easier to dump everything together. This translates to people having to pay up from their free time to be able to recycle things and paying less for not recycling. Over here all bottles sold in stores include a deposit, such as 40c a bottle that is given back when you take them to a collection unit that are in every store and you can get deducted from your groceries with the receipt. While I know some companies actually pay you money so they can collect your old car for recycling I also know that a lot of people rather don't use it.

One of the issues is that on society / civilization level we are wasting shitloads of work and efficiency because we don't have some system in place that would allow us to act smart. Recycling is just one thing, there are many things that don't work, things may appear to work at some point of the chain from a given perspective but on the society's POV we end up doing something that gives entity A money or break even but ends up losing tons of resources. It is how the systems are built, they're often built so that doing the smart thing from the perspective of civilization ends up costing for the entity that does the good thing. Just because we don't have the equivalent of 'deposit' or some such in place.

Good example is health care. We spend a lot of resources measuring the effectiveness of health care. However, no one gives a shit if the patient was successfully cured, how that treatment affected that patient. In most cases a patient checks in, is listed in with primary condition, treatment is administered and the treatment episode ends. Period. No one will know if it was detrimental of beneficial to that person nor what the "effect/cost" was. There's no such a thing as looking at a hospital and asking them to max their "effect/cost" ratio. That might sometimes mean that more money be spent and the result would be even better than the increase in spending. Sometimes it would mean that less is better or dropping out a treatment that doesn't help at all. But the thing is, we have no system of following up on or measuring how a treatment affected a patient's life, capacity to work, quality of life, none of it. Instead we look at "we treated X patients and it cost us Y", "make it better".
