Was playing an old (now cancelled) MMO called Black Prophecy a while back. I was grouped up with someone this one time, and about an hour into group questing and so forth, he suddenly types "I have to go, I can't let my parents see me playing this." I spent about an hour laughing my ass off at the thought of some kid quickly alt-tabing out and trying to keep his mom from seeing what he was doing. I used to pull that crap all the time back before online gaming was even a thing for me.

The big one was Shadows of the Empire for the N64. My mom didn't like FPS's or M-rated games, so I had to quickly hit the camera button and go to third person when I heard her on the stairs. And bloody hell, the days she caught me playing Diablo 2 and Unreal Tournament were nightmares.
Yeah, If your an adult, then quitting early for no reason is a shit thing to do. We've all had to leave a game early or AFK for RL stuff, but at least let your group know you're not ditching them with no excuse. That just tells them that they and their time don't matter to you.

My problem with this guy is that he addressed his letter specifically to parents.

Parents do not have to give a shit about their kid's online playing habits. When Mom says it's bed time, it's bed time, and get your ass in bed. Telling junior he can finish his game is also telling him to deliberately start late every time so he can finish. Kids learn how to manipulate their parents VERY quickly.

I am not saying everything they said was legit, and yes some of the bits are ridiculous. However, teaching kids to respect others time, in my opinion is not a bad thing. The delivery is wrong, and yes when a parent says get to bed, there is no excuse. At the same time, that parent should be involved enough in their kid's habits to know what is going on and what they are doing.

Very few parents handle gaming the way you do. It's sad, but there it is.

I'd just include the tidbit in my lesson 'go to bed now, if you hadn't decided to ignore your bedtime to play a little longer you wouldn't be leaving your entire team hanging now, I'm not sending you to bed to punish them, you're punishing them by trying to play past your bedtime.'

I remember the old CRT monitors at school back in the day. When the teacher stood up from his chair and marched to the back of the class to see everyone's progress - check out no one's fooling around and so... and row by row *ZIRP* as the monitor's quickly switched resolution as people alt+tabbed! :D
