As the title said, GM has gone to the courts or what not to try and confirm that because of the software that is in the ECU and in the car you cant own it, and GM is the rightful owners.. the DMCA is what they are trying to use to try and state that you don't own the car because of the software in the ECU. They are trying to say you are just "Licensing the car". http://boingboing.net/2015/05/21/gm-says-you-dont-own-your-ca.html
I think when the average consumer hears about this, they will think twice before signing that contract and go to another dealership. Who the hell wants to be told you don't own the car you just spent 5 years paying off. and you are just Licensing it.. well, the same could be said for property in the US. but that's a tax though, so your really on indefinite lease there.
I think people would really be pissed off if they have to pay more. Do most states have cars in property tax which requires people to pay every year for car. well a tax on the car.
Yes, your in one of those states, its called a license plate silly. you also have a safety inspection which is technically a tax. edit.. The property tax in the US is more of lease from the government.. Which is where I was going with that. And this is proven you don't own the property because if you don't pay your "tax" money, they will seize your property. Much like a bank would seize your property if you didn't pay your loan. edit again... and by property tax I mean land...
The tax isn't for the license plate. it's seperate though tied with the timing of inspection and registration. inspection in mecklenburg county, NC for me was $30 (they changed it so it's $12 or something for anything newer then a 2013). registration fee was $28. but then there is a vehicle property tax (a personal property tax) that varies depending on what you drive (I think amount you paid for the car). I drive a 2007 Hyundai Tuscon SE paid around $25,000 for it (give or take $1000). My property tax on it is $116.56 so add in the registration (since they are tied to the same time) brings it to $144.56 that I have to pay once a year. add the $30 for inspection I pay $170 for the year on my car not counting gas or any maintenance that may need to be done. I think NJ has a vehicle tax. might only be the eastern states. I know not all states have it. I think it's more dependent on how much you paid for the car when you signed for it then model. model might have nothing to with it. so this thing with GM would really kill them in any state that has a vehicle property tax. because if you are just "licensing" the vehicle from them that will probably be a monthly fee. an interesting thing. if you want to pay lower property taxes. go to a state that generally goes republican. on average the tax rates are lower then democrat. generally. not all states have the vehicle tax. my dad who drives a 2013 sonata his vehicle tax is close to $200. my sister who bought a kia soul paid less then $20,000 for her car but I'm guessing her property tax on it will be less then $100. I think age of the vehicle factors in to though. I remember my tax being $10 higher last year. http://www.marketwatch.com/story/st...-lowest-property-and-vehicle-taxes-2015-04-09 Looks like 27 states have vehicle taxes. list is at the bottom of the page. and holy shit Kansas on average is $1000 in vehicle taxes.
Only paid sales tax which is 6.5%, no inspection fees, I only pay for the plate which is about 40 dollars a year. Some states have taxes on the type of car you drive to get you to drive specific cars. Like in the some eurpean countries they have a tax for vehicles from what I know, the bigger the vehicle the higher the tax, or like in japan it goes by the engine size. Which is why the cut off is 2 liters for most cars because that's when the tax goes up a lot higher.
ah but if you move to a state that has vehicle property tax you may have to pay yearly for your car. it has nothing to do with sales tax. some states have a boat tax. not sure how it works if you move from a state that doesn't have a tax to one that does.
It's not just GM that's taking this stance. IIRC every major automaker in the world signed onto the same letter. All this came out a couple months ago.
They should have added in the sales tax per state in the chart. That changes a lot of things when you look at it. Could have also added in average toll road tax per person.
Yeah I'm interested in how much average people pay in sales tax. tolls to actually. whether they be toll roads or something the EZ pass lane some cities have.
Most of floridas taxes comes the tourist / hospitality tax which I think is 11.5%, and toll roads. This past semester I was paying 20 dollars a 50 cents a week in tolls. luckily I don't have to go to that campus often now. which is why we don't have a vehicle tax and sales tax is only 6.5%, we do have property tax.
We pay 6% sales tax in this county, but that varies all over the place. Downtown Atlanta usually pays 8.
Breaking News: Americans no longer have the right to call europeans 'commies', GM has pulled a stunt that not only makes this habit obsolete but opens up a flank through which europeans can now make snipey comments about american car industry and big corporations. In other news: Does it really matter if you own your home or if you're just licensing it from General Electric because the house has an air conditioning system that is running their software? We're interviewing John -"I don't relaly mind it. I get to live in my ho.. sorry, GE's house they're graciously licensing to me, so I don't know why people are making such a fuss about some words on paper. I think that it's pretty childish to get worked up about something so trivial that doesn't change anything. I like it better this way." Thank you, back to studio, anyone who criticizes these changes is an idiot. Everyone laugh at them. Stop being such pussies and get over it.
I copyrighted that sentence... you now owe me 10 dollars for its use.... This can extend to anything that uses some type of software... no freaking way this BS they are trying to do should ever happen.. hopefully..... This is the USA were talking about though...
I swear the corporations in this country are my biggest source of amusement. What will they try next?
