but I mean, it's higher sure, is the advantage, being able to leave from a place further away, and reach further?

Pretty much yes. Probably also detection/response times. I mean enemy response time will be way down if they dont detect insertion till they are already on the ground.

Its raining Tu-95s! Another crash today.
Probably won't be seeing as many intercepts over the next few months. I wonder if they'll ground the whole fleet again like the Su-34s.

It's one thing to bluff being strong and another thing not being able to replace worn out parts because there's no supply for them. Makes that stuff hard on the long run.

Was just thinking - are they really flying with transponders switched off or have they just broken down? Also, what if their navigational systems are also simply broken? That would at least explain the number of incidents recently.

More seriously, I think russian aircraft weren't designed to be durable from the start. They were designed to be easy and cheap to produce and to be used for a while and then replaced.

One of the major factors that led Finland choosing F-18 over Mig-29 was that although it would have been possible to get more than 200 Migs instead of 65 Hornets, it was estimated that at any given time more than 30% of the Migs would have been undergoing maintenance. And they had obsolete electronics. Iirc, at the time of purchase the Mig could target and track 2 enemy planes whereas F-18 could track and fire at 8 planes simultaneously and had far more advanced ECM etc.

And the situation has not certainly tipped more for Russia's advantage in the past years.

    Edit:

Russia has grounded the following types:

    Su-24
    Mig-29
    Tu-95

Mig-34 crash was during landing when it's parachute failed to open and it didn't slow down enough but apparently this type was not grounded.

Also, Russian Air Forces had 30 crashes between 2010 and mid 2014.

I'm not terribly worried over these guys. Iirc, something akin 186 systems depending on Ukrainian parts (not available) and 571 depending on Nato parts (not available).

There's been a couple of these failures during parades and special events, including the non-military thing when the olympic rings didn't open up on live broadcast. But yea, a lot of equipment failures on public events and so, doesn't really look so good from their position.

Why the hell were people standing that close? I'm amazed no one was injured or killed. at least it doesn't seem like anyone was.

Officially no one was injured and the test went perfectly. All else is evil lies!

And of course the amount of military deaths during peace time is now a state secret so officially no one ever dies. At most the crew might have sent text messages stating their resignation from military only seconds before being consumed by the blast.

    One thing is for certain.

It takes a lot of courage to be a russian gunner. Every time you press trigger you're playing russian roulette - someone will die but you never know if it's you or the enemy. If you're lucky it might be a dud.

Their rocket and missile systems seem to be malfunctioning a lot lately and their "planes fall from the skies". Seems to be rather epidemic, at least quality has not gone up since soviet era and not after the sanctions. They had a good thing going on 2 years back when everyone was selling them weapons components and tech, including Nato.

That Igor Markov guy who seems to know his stuff said that a single US missile destroyer in the Black Sea has more firepower than the entire russian fleet there.

    Somehow that doesn't sound impossible.

Considering almost the entire Russian fleet is tied to the dock slowly rusting away, that certainly seems plausible. The only thing they have that sort of works are their submarines, and not very many of them.

Yup, in a flight show. It seems like they're having some serious problems with their gear at the moment with a lot of incidents and often during special events when you'd think they'd have their parade gear in use.

I feel bad for the pilots. It's not their fault that they have to operate flying coffins.
