Sheep, You sure about that? As far as I know there were no such things and torps were often circling or even turning straight back to ship that launched them due to malfunctions in stearing gear. Only thing I know that could do this for purpose, was German T5 acoustic torpedo. It was equipped with hydrophones and after set distance would actively start searching for its target. Thus if shot solution had error that resulted in torp starting its serch on extreme range of its hydrophones, it could run circles trying to "get lock" on ship until it run out of fuel and sank.

In fact Germans took up to using it themselves, their most successful raid with 105 JU 88's resulted in sinking of 16 allied ships.

Another interesting piece of equipment to which existence I was oblivious, you never know... Thanks for bringing it to light.
As a sidenote, sentence: "It was acknowledged by the Germans as superior to anything they had" is from possible to highly dubious at best, as it doesnt have time period to which it relates specified.

Yep, the St. Louis is probably the biggest and most noticeable jump in ships that I've yet piloted. So many guns...

If you're impressed by the gun quantity you should see how much meth is in St. Louis.

If you look up that sentence in the quote there's a reference number 1 there which directs to this on the wiki page:

Now, I haven't read that book myself so I can't verify but that indicates that it is said in the book.

Also, Germans did adopt the Italian torpedo for their own use as they didn't have anything like it:

Italy signed armistice in 1943 and Germans kept developing their prototypes for some time after that and indeed they developed seeking torpedo prototypes, some truly hard to detect subs, early seeking missiles and such but they usually didn't have time to properly finish their late designs.

Iirc. the Italian torpedoes were also mentioned somewhere in von Tippelskirch's History of World War II. It was a really interesting book offering a German high command perspective to the war, lots of details on what are left to guessing or estimates in US literature. Obviously some source criticism applies too, for instance his style was very bitter towards Russians and also to WAllies for not rescuing more of Germany. He also did a pretty decent coverage of all the theaters of the war with very high detail to troop and vehicle numbers, positions, front lines etc.

    I'm rambling...

Guess I've been unprecise, time period I meant there is period of the WWII.

i will agree.. trying to sink a Cruiser or a BB with DD guns is an exercise in futility... HOWEVER... DD High explosive rounds WILL break steering rudders.. set fires and disable turrets (good match for me will see me with 15-20k points of damage from guns... with another 15-20k points of damage from fires).. and when used as a distraction can cause the enemy ship to overlook the torps you fired 20 seconds ago helping ensure you a solid hit from the ship killing torps... yeah.. it hurts like hell when that Cleveland or that Atlanta turns its fast firing main guns on you... but the satisfaction of seeing the panic in their turn when they realize (too late) that you had already fired torps.. is priceless.

Now dont get me wrong... i am by no means saying that its the way things SHOULD be done... (i take lots of damage... and my actual survival rate is somewhere around 35%).. but i make some serious kills... i am currently trying my ass off to top 200k points of damage in a single round ( i currently have topped out at a little over 160k points damage with 16 torp hits)

DD Vs DD.. torps are near useless as both of you are maneuverable as hell... so it often times (if you dont have decent backup) it ends up a guns on guns fight... Americans typically win these kinds of fights as their DD's have more and faster firing guns than their IJN counterparts ( tier 4 American DD is equal to a tier 7 IJN DD for gun damage potential) ... so it ends up being a case of who fired first, more accurately, and dodged better + luck ( i normally end up running away screaming for backup if i find myself facing an American DD)

During the World of Starships April Fool's event in 2015, a variant of the Essex given to players that had a Blue and Black wave paint job, modified design with two Gearing destroyers attached to each side, loaded with spaceship aircraft and re-named Enterprice. At this time the essex was the highest tier us carrier.

also the yamato, gearing, des moine and zao had world of starships stuff. with laser cannons.

Well, Italians were no banana republic then. Their fascist leadership may not have had a strong support and Mussolini might have been one of history's worst commanders but Italy was making some of the best ships of the entire period, their torp bombers were the best and their torpedoes were very advanced. The circling parachute torpedoes (Motobomba FFF) were already being designed in 1935.

It is true that Germans did during the war develop some of the best designs in the world but most of that stuff were either out late war or still on prototype phase.

But overall the comparison in tech is not always easy to summarize. Italians certainly appeared to have some very advanced stuff especially early into the war. However, I'm not sure but I think they didn't quite pursue as much R&D as other participants I think. Not sure, I haven't really dug deep into Italy's tech development through the war because of their incredibly low impact for their size and tech. A great example of how wars are not won with equipment but primarily by having relentless determination and will - and having your leaders make less mistakes than the enemy's. For Italy their leader was the definition of failure and he also completely failed to unite his people behind a common cause.

In the end Italy kind of benefited from all of that as they didn't end up losing 10 age groups worth of their young to meat grinder and not having the entire country blasted to tiny bits. While they became a warzone, the overall impact to them was not as steep as it could've been.

I'm planning on some Warships sometime tonight. Probably around 8 or 9 PM EST for a few hours. Come and join me! BTW, Sync drops sorta work if you are the same Tier sets.

3x just for your first victory, not the whole weekend. It's still a nice bump though. I pretty much unlocked the Clemson in one round. Right now I'm tier 3 across the board (no IJN BB yet though) except for the Clemson I just unlocked. I'd love to play with y'all but we're about to head to Florida for the weekend.
