I must say I was initially excited... until I saw the combat. Then I was almost disgusted. It almost looks like some iApp.
Apparently they didn't show off the tactical combat... But even so the jokey aspect of the trailer is off putting
What was it then? There were small dots (echelons) making random circles and ships being destroyed. Do you think it was 'autoresolve' option? What I'm especially afraid is that "that's it, that's the combat". And agreed. Why does everything have to be a big joke. It doesn't really help with immersion if the game is made up to be a forced joke.
I know nothing of this franchise and already I'm put off by it. That was horrendous and painful in a degree nobody could even consider.
The Master of Orion I and Master of Orion II are iconic classics that largely define the 4X genre: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit and eXterminate. They both brought games forward by leaps and bounds back in their day and are still regularly played to date. They also have resulted in a large number of game studios trying to 'recreate MoO 2' or so. By most common opinion no one has succeeded thus far - though this could be part nostalgia of how age has sweetened memories of the games and frankly possibly nothing could ever compare since the people themselves are older now. That said, the games were amazing in their time and unique in many ways so it would be really difficult to recreate such uniqueness in current era with the abundance of games out there. All of that said, this stinking heap is just cashing out on nostalgia and it looks like a produce of cynical businessmen.
What they didn't show you is that the space battles can be bigger! ...you just need to buy more hangar slots for 3.99 capitalist swine currencies each! Also... what was that video even!? I thought teasers were supposed to hype a game, not scare gamers into playing Sid Meier's Starships... Because seriously, Starships looks better. (starships was fucking awful)
For those that don't know the history, the original Master of Orion was a masterpiece of its generation. It defined the 4x strategy genre and has continued to set the standard for all games of its type even to this day. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Master_of_Orion Wargaming.net is basically shitting all over its legacy; yet another example of mishandled copyrights in the gaming industry. Fans of the original should be pissed.
I'm pretty sure this accounts for about 90% of the problems with remakes. Some games just really don't age well. Even if they were amazing at the time.
Well, graphics aside and just looking at gameplay and mechanics, Master of Orion II for instance is still today a very solid game. You have a clear and functional resource system, colonizing of world, pretty decent gameplay balance that favors research, clear tech tree with really valuable technologies and some hard choices, you design all of your ships yourself etc. and you can customize and refit your existing ships and assign captains.. And an ok diplomacy system. It looks like Wargaming are turning it into a childish thing. Think of a Battletech game where the battles and economics are possibly dumbed down and all the characters are retarded caricature douches that try to be fun while landing in a pit of awkward and disgust. If you thought consolitis was bad, you haven't seen mobilitis. This looks like mobilitis.
In terms of modern games, I recommend Galactic Civilizations III for your epic galaxy-spanning strategy fix. They have made a lot of improvements to it recently and the ship building features are awesome: http://www.galciv3.com/ It is pretty much the closest I've seen to a spiritual successor for the Master of Orion franchise. The customization is nearly endless... you can even make your own customized faction with their own unique quirks (I built a nomadic space viking faction for example)
I fully agree with Magnus. While GalCiv is really well done, my only grief with it was the atmosphere and theme. On the other hand depending on mood it is also great in how it doesn't take itself too seriously imho. But of course, there's still plenty of room for new entries into the 4X genre which is pretty much dominated by almost sole entry of GalCiv.
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! GALACTIC CIV IS SERIOUS BUSINESS!: http://store.steampowered.com/app/395990 (bonus points to Stardock for including a campaign as well)
Reviving this discussion a little bit. If I understand correctly, Early Access starts on Feb 26, 2016. Now, my original thoughts, based on the early trailer, were that the game was too comical. That said, have you guys seen the most recent stuff with the voice acting etc? There is some serious talent involved and the graphics look pretty good.
