So Ridley Scott made a prequel movie about the beginnings of Earth's interaction with the 'Pilot' and xenomorph species that we have already experienced in Alien, Aliens, Alien 3, and Alien Resurrection. Most people would call that a prequel. But Mr. Scott insists that it isn't.. And after having watched this movie, I agree. At BEST it can be described as a bad reboot. My personal opinion is that this quivering pile of dollar-bill-fed-fecal-matter should be buried under the landfill used to erase the E.T. Atari game from existance then fired into the sun. Imagery is intense and well done. I can't fault the screen-work and improvements made in the last 20 years that have been applied to the movie. Tech is pretty believable and impressive in it's 'common-place' acceptance by the cast. Folks walk through holographic projections like they do it all the time. AI-driven auto-surgery pods perform emergency surgery. Stuff is just plain cool. Sound is equally intense, especially if you pay to see it in I-Max. But the whole point of this post is to make sure you do NOT see this movie. Writing is cliche and contrived. Characters are so flat that they make Nickelodeon characters look like creations of George RR or Terry Pratchett. Dialogue is painful to listen to at times. I honest-to-dog cringed once or twice. The plot.. honestly, I've read better fan-fiction. You know that idea for a bad-ass movie you had while [baked/drunk/tweaking/coked-out-of-your head/spazzing-on-aderol] then woke up the next day and re-read what you wrote down? Prometheus is nowhere near as good. I'm not a communications major nor a professional film critic, but for the love of everything Sci-Fi, don't waste your money on this film.
Of course now everybody will want to go see just how bad it is. Sounds like a $1 Redbox rental for me.
Concurrently, it's sitting at 74% on Rotten Tomatoes. Some of the reviews in echo your sentiments, however. It could easily go downhill from where it is currently. I'm waiting for Brave from Pixar myself.
It's also at 87% with audiences, instead of critics. And Madagascar 3 is at 75%. So I call it all bullshit.
Honestly, I only ever watched Madagascar for the penguins. Because they were fucking badass/funny as hell. Loved their little show.
I wish I could give a better example, but I've already started the process to erase this movie from my memory. 100pf Vodka does the trick.
I'm going to see Prometheus tomorrow with the missus. Why? Because even if it's that bad, it should still be seen on the big screen for the cinematography. Some things lose its luster when moved to the small screen and even if it's shit wrapped in donkey balls stuffed in a used condom I still want to experience it in the theatre. I think after that we're going to palette cleanse with The Avengers.
I think I'm the only one with no interest in super hero movies any more. Going to take the wife to Prom tomorrow, just to spite you Vargyr.
Actually, The Avengers are definitely worth seeing on the big screen there Dihm. Everything is just so well done, that it deserves that much at least.
I'm waiting for Brave and then Wreck it Raplh for my next cinema experience. I can't get enough of Pixar.
I've a nice theatre system at home as well with 46" 3D LED television, 5.1 DTS/DPL II audio, BR player and I still like to see stuff in the theatre. I think there are some movies that should be seen on the fucking huge screen.
I don't know how I feel about Prometheus. As it stands, I'm of the mindset: It's a movie and I saw it.
I have to admit, I enjoyed most of Prometheus. What did you expect? Shakespeare? Go back and watch Alien and then tell me about flat characters. Horror films don't need deep, emotionally involved people. Alien, and Prometheus, are what happens when you replace Jason Voorhees with an alien monster. I'll admit the plot was definitely a little... contrived i guess, but the visuals ranged from creepy to downright disturbing, which is a plus in this type of flick. Overall, I'll say it met expectations in some areas, and exceeded them in a couple. The only thing I really missed was not having Lance Henriksen.
I wasn't expecting Shakespeare, I was expecting a horror/thriller film like every trailer plays it out to be. That was more of an...informative movie on the origin of the xenomorph species. As I was expecting to have moments where my adrenaline was up, I'm am thoroughly disappointed, but I accept that while it wasn't what I was expecting it wasn't necessarily bad. I just wouldn't call it good either. It was a movie. A pretty movie, but just a movie.
I actually want to see Prometheus for two reasons... Noomi Rapace ( yum. Loved her in Girl with the Dragon Tattoo ), and just for how beautiful it looks. Kinda of iffy on the Amazing Spider-Man though. From what I've seen, it looks VERY true to the comics, but after Spider-Man 3, I'm just not sure I can take anymore trauma from Sony.
I just returned from seeing Prometheus. I don't think it is going to win "Film of the Year", but it was definitely worth the matinee price to see. I'm glad to see another A grade horror sci-fi movie. I kind of want to play a good bug-hunt game on the table top now. If "The Possession" can actually restore my faith in Sam Raimi's ability to make a good horror film, I'll be impressed and happy.
Well, Prometheus won't win any awards for writing, but I think overall it was a good movie. Was nice to see a good sci-fi movie in the theatre and I can't see why people are complaining unless it's solely based around the script. 2 thumbs up, I'd recommend, I'd see again, yadda yadda yadda.
