For those who still dakka etc, have a look. http://warthunder.com/en/news/4304-war-thunder-four-years-and-still-going-strong-en/ Liking the half price sales on the premiums too!
Man I really loved this game until they fucked with Sim and realistic plane modes... and the grind got a little ridiculous.
I stick to tank RB/Sim when I play this. The planes are lost as far as I'm concerned. It'll be tanks and boats when they come out.
Planes have gotten better from what I can tell. I was having fun with it until I got heavily involved in school. Would really like to pick up WT with a group again. Tanking in Simulation mode with friends is still the "best of" mode I think, though. SO much better when you can coordinate attacks.
Can consistently perform in SIM and RB - I suck at Arcade anything though. Got a 5 kill Sim battle last night with an M10, and have been doing very good ever since I learnt how to manually zero the main gun.
I keep getting "simulation" and "realistic battles" mixed up. Simulation is "super-hardcore" mode and Realistic Battles is the "Goldilocks" game mode (not too arcadey, not too hard core). Simulation in tanks is actually really not that bad, but flying planes in it can be really frustrating for new players. Realistic Battles for tanks+planes is by far my preferred setting because you still get some helpful UI assists that are really needed for casual players, but you don't get bullshit x-ray super scope vision from Arcade that lets you easily see and shoot hostiles from the other side of the map. Arcade is especially rough for US tanks that really require using stealth and sneak attacks. The only Arcade mode I can tolerate is "planes only", but there is very little strategy involved with it and it does get kind of tedious after awhile. It mostly exists as a "fuck everything, let's go mindlessly shoot stuff" mode. A lot of the OP Russian bullshittery happens in Arcade too.
Realistic mode was fun, especially since simulator turned into a 'hunt the pixel in the distance' game. Only thing I didn't like about realistic is that you couldn't sneak up on anyone, they would see you on their radar even if you dove straight down or from behind and avoid you before you got a shot off. If the radar had been directional or work off the players directed vision that would've been cool.
They've disabled the magic Realistic Mode radar - it only shows friendlies now, so sneaking is back on the table now. Still prefer SIM because you can't leer around a corner in 3rd person, making being sneaky even better. And once you learn to use the commander's view (binoculars), your crew's range-finding skill/equipment and setting your gun's sight distance control, you're magic. Americans, Soviets and Germans do the best in SIM thanks to filled AP rounds, and early German HEAT, which respectively mauls a full crew or sets off ammunition/fuel almost immediately. With the half price US tank sale tomorrow, I'm thinking of maybe getting the M46 "Tiger" Patton. If I cheap out, I'll get the M20.
Ah you're talking tanks, I was talking planes. Sim tanks are in a much better spot IMO, plus they basically tried to remove sim planes entirely from the game for a while
Spent a bit of money - not too much seeing as stuff was super cheap and ended up with loads of premium goodies for about 30 Euros. Now in possession of about 6 new Premium vehicles, 40 days of premium time, and I've got 4k gold left over. Anyone still tanking?
I still do, but apparently I have to 'get on my level bro' because I enjoy seal clubbing in arcade now and then
Seal clubbing is bad, m'kay? M'kay. I prefer RB/SB for the much higher reward for doing stuff. And I like the sneaky/hidey stuff. You still alive after 5 minutes? HERE'S TEN GRAND! Only got 2 assists? You just recovered your R&R without premium or anything! But I'm not above Seal Clubbing, being the heartless shitlord that I am I will gladly join in some seaborne mammal battery.
