Polish your joysticks... Snub-fighters, ground combat, and player controlled factions confirmed! In-game player avatars and multicrew open beta starts Fed 26th! NOTE: I will be doing "headcount" polls here to assess viability of games as officially sanctioned by the Skjaldborg. "Officially sanctioned" games will be provided a subforum. If enough interest is expressed, officially sanctioned games may be elevated to "Branch" status (assuming they meet all necessary requirements for Branch status). The purpose of all this is to help safeguard our members from unnecessary spending on games that show initial promise, but are not likely to survive past the first month or two of interest.
If I'm being honest, I am intrigued, but the $30 barrier to entry is larger than I'd like. I hadn't heard much positive about this when it first came out, or in the year or so after, but it sounds like it has been significantly improved. I would need to see more gameplay and do some more research before I could say one way or another whether I'd commit to it.
Totally agree with your impression of it when it was first released. The game got high marks from me for its simulation aspects, but the game was so damn boring at launch. I did not expect to pick the game up again, but the Horizons expansion has really given the game a new lease on life for me. I recommend watching the patch note videos and watching us streaming it to see what changes have been made. The multicrew update coming soon will have a huge impact on gameplay as well.
As Moro says, It's a playable space game. I shelled out $30 for it the other night. Haven't looked back. It's very enjoyable. We need to up our numbers anyways and this would be a good start. There will be people who play both games (ED and SC). Lets do it.
Is that Horizons DLC must for the game to get everything out of it. No planetary landings without it?
Horizons gives you a lot of the cool bells and whistles including planetary landing. That being said, if you are on the fence, I recommend holding off until after the Multicrew patch comes later this month. I think Horizons also unlocks the Engineer questlines which unlocks another whole level of tuning your favorite ship to your personal tastes. Like the Asp but wished it was faster than standard parts could get you?... now you can, but there are trade-offs to gaining that speed boost. What's important to know is that each ship is now much more personalized with the Horizon update. The same ship can be modified to be slower but tougher or faster but more fragile (for example). That being said, I was bored to tears with this game on the original release, but all the new stuff Horizons added has made it a much more enjoyable game for me. As has been noted above, as far as I'm concerned this game will not be another FOTM game. We are here to stay in it.
so i've mainly only ever been interested in elite for pure exploration. i don't want to get too much into combat stuff as i don't want to screw with the muscle memory i'm trying to develop for SC. just want to occasionally hop in, chill, soak up the sights. problem is, seems like you need a well-equipped ship to be able to just head out into the black (and rightfully so). for you elite vets, any rough estimate on the hours needed to buy and kit a ship for a sustained voyage in the black? we talking 5hrs? 10? 40?
I maxed out my Diamondback Explorer in ~ 5 days from this last Monday. Also I wouldn't get attached to anything is SC until release, but if you want to keep your Newtonian flight style. You can. Ps. FEHU is currently in a civil war.
Stupid Fehu won't give me any stupid planetary scan missions because my stupid explorer rank isn't high enough :/
Fehu is on the edge of explored space, just use your map and fly out a ways and pop a scanner. we can help.
UPDATE: After a positive result of the poll and two weeks of sustained activity, Elite now has its own subforum: http://www.theskjaldborg.com/index.php?forums/elite-dangerous.320/
With the positive response, I will now remove the sticky. THANKS FOR THE SUPPORT EVERYONE! SEE YOU IN THE GREAT BLACK!
