I busted my spouse spending over a $100 on "cosmetics"... That I had to get a FOIA request to discover this and call a Board of Inquiry is a direct violation of the Budget and Accounting Agreement. So, I did what every decent husband would do.... I bought her tickets on the guilt train. Now, if this Elite Dangerous (ED) is going to be a "thing" I just might jump on this space-wagon. Now I would only be able to get the small $30ish version, so no premiums for me, and NO subscriptions either. ( I might be evil but I am lawful evil...)I won't be able to do any subscriptions. More than likely I will never be able to afford the game SC nor the upgraded rig in order to enjoy it. ED however is adequate. Thank in advance for any responses. .
I don't know who made the decision on these, but the different packages are mostly bullshit. All that matters is the base game and Horizons. That being said, all of it is modular so if you are tight for cash, you can buy the base game now and buy Horizons later without any drawbacks or spending any extra money. Furthermore, the whole "Season Pass" thing is a complete misbranding of what Horizons actually is. It's nothing like these other terrible "season passes" that are a cancer on the industry. Horizons is a straight-up expansion pack that basically expands upon the original product (gee, what a novel idea!). Here's a brief summary of what Horizons includes (source: Steam) None of this is hype. Horizons does EXACTLY what it says on the tin. Basically, if you choose to play elite without Horizons, you are essentially only seeing half of the game. That being said, if you are looking to ease yourself into things, it is perfectly viable to buy the base game now and pick up Horizons later. Most importantly, you will still be able to play with those who own Horizons, you will just not have access to all the content. At the end of the day if you find yourself enjoying the base game, but find yourself bored and wanting more... you will definitely want to pick up Horizons. It really does make the game twice as good if not better. At $30 for the base game and $30 for the expansion, this is very reasonably priced for what you get. That being said, if someone here wants a packaged deal for a few FREE extra (read: cosmetic) rewards, I recommend the Commander Deluxe Edition. Also, if you want to support the developer directly and not through Steam (more money will go to the right people), you can purchase everything here (Steam keys are still available).
I own this and would be willing to give it another try. Is it playable in VR with an xbox controller?
short answer is yes but for vr I think you would be much more comfortable with a hotas setup. I only have oculus dk1 which used to work but the text was prety much illegible, so I haven't tried in a while... But it's also available on xbone so I expect there is a relatively easy way to make it work the same way on pc...
If you are doing VR, than also having full hotas is highly recommended as you will not be able to read the keys on a keyboard. If you aren't prepared to drop that kind of cash, but still want some of the free-look visual appeal, an IR head tracker is a good alternative. There is also free software available that can turn any camera into one if you are the DIY type: http://www.free-track.net/english/
Is there exploring and trading/courier stuff to do? I'm not one of these fighter pilot types. (I like bombers and attack craft though)
There is all of that. You can turn the larger ships into huge traders, explorers, or battle-barges bristling with automated turrets and just lumber into the middle of enemy formations. With the Horizons update, you can also have NPC or player crew members man smaller snubfighters to defend you.

I support this 100%. I saw quite a few players playing a few weeks ago, and I started asking around about where this was headed. Then I see the poll made and the supportive responses to it, so I spent $$ on it that I really don't have. So c'mon ya space truckers! Get a sack and hit the black!

I have no idea what I'm doing in this game.. did pretty good until it asked me to fly AND shoot. I got frustrated, put the HOTAS down and haven't been able to find the bug again. Grrr.

Took me this long to catch on everything after finals last semester. Long story short: Multicrews is bugged as fuck still Game still suffers from not having interesting shit to do (other than PvP). PS4 release is positive sign of future growth So rather than burn ourselves out on an unfinished game. I am opting to put it on hold until the game is a little more developed. My sincere apologies to anyone who is disappointed by this news. I genuinely believed there was more to do with this than there currently is.
