should send them my way, we haven't had anything that could be considered a direct attack in at least a week now, as I hear gunfire while typing this but its just celebratory. Bedsides, the small firefight last tuesday night was a couple of blocks away, and then the two bombs the next night were about a mile and a half away, and the police truck that was blown up two nights before that was a mile the opposite direction so they don't really count. And not that we are all staying on our compounds today due to the demonstrations/celebrations for today's holiday, or that we will have to be on lock down at the end of the week for the next religious holiday since it will be targeted by people who think the group celebrating it are totally wrong in what they believe about the same religion and should die for it.

All that said I really do enjoy it here and the people we work with in trying to rebuild the country are fantastic, just a few thousands of crazies wanting to watch it all burn and willing to die to make it happen.

 

well played!! so far today we have had one bomber shot before he could detonate and a second that was able to go off into a crowd of people, all in all not as bad as I had feared but then we are only mid afternoon at this point.

 

I would say that half or so never detonate, mostly shot before having the chance to do it. Fairly common for the teams that do assaults in the city here to all wear vests to try to take out the military and police teams sent in after them. Thankfully the military and police response teams are very good and rarely take casualties while eliminating all the bad guys. The one yesterday was approaching a checkpoint and refused to stop after being challenged several times so they let him have it. While I wouldn’t be surprised if some vests had remote controls, I’ve not heard of any deadman switches. My personal thought is that their handlers and bomb makers don’t want any premature discharges.

Couple of months ago had a police truck hit by a remote controlled ied that had been placed inside a watermelon in a road side fruit cart, after that we contemplated limiting fruit purchases to ones smaller than hand grenades. If they ever got some decent leadership in planning and executing attacks they would be scary, thankfully there is a decided lack of field experience as the life expectancy is only part way through one mission for them. The really scary part are the rocket and mortar attacks, not so much if you are at the target, but if you are anywhere in the general vicinity of the target as their aim sucks bad. It sucks having to be so callous, but if you can’t laugh at them, you will not last long dealing with it.
