Tried to play a new campaign, two mistakes I made so far that required restart:

    1) First attempt, didn't quite graps the district / building system. Started up, starting building districts. Didn't realize, however, that I didn't have the pops to actually populate the districts as the UI is a bit hard to grasp at first glance. So all of a sudden I had a energy crisis from all these unworked districts and even after prioritizing hte energy jobs it didn't seem like people were taking them. Ok, lesson learned, don't grow faster than your population.

    2) Better this time, got to about a 4 star system empire that was pretty wide. I neglected my alloys a bit too much, had near storage max of minerals. Pirate fleet basically wiped out my fleet, and my neighbor who had so far been in a commerce and research pact with me decided that since I had no military I should be his vassal and when I refused he declared war. I had nowhere near alloys to build up a fleet or even more defenses (I had defenses but they were on the side of my angry rival). So, don't neglect the alloys.

Yeah, Empire Size and Administrative Cap are a big consideration. For every single point you are over your Administration Cap, it penalizes your economy by 1% (I believe Districts and Systems each are worth 1 and Colonies are worth 2 points each). You have to be mindful about expanding too quickly. If you build too fast, your infrastructure will expand to the point where you don't have the people to actually support it. I think of it kind of like those ghost cities in China where they build these huge apartment complexes, but no one lives in them.

You never want to build more districts and buildings (which create more jobs) much beyond what your current population can support. What I typically do is start by building a few energy and mineral districts to increase my energy and mineral production quickly. Once I have sufficient amount of both, I then build another alloy production building (to help with ship and station construction). Then, it's mostly just a matter of building more of whatever I'm short on. But there is definitely a balancing act; over build on any one thing and it can easily crash your economy. You also have to be careful not to upgrade existing buildings until you have the work force to support them. Otherwise you will tank your basic worker population and wreck your economy at the bottom level.

Finally, make sure you are reviewing and modifying your Policies and Edicts as soon as you start the game. Directives on individual planets such as the 25% pop boost for 1000 food are also recommended. Keep in mind that certain government types also start with different Policies and Edicts by default. If you know what your preferred play style is, you can save yourself some work by pre-selecting your preferred gov't type.

For example, I like to play somewhat aggressively with a focus on research, diplomacy, and optimizing my population. Because of that, I almost never want to use "Xenophile", "Xenophobic", or "Pacifist" gov't traits because all have more limited diplomatic and/or population management policies.

This is your reminder that DAY 2 of our Stellaris Campaign will start 8pm EST on Wednesday sharp! Please try to be on time. Hot Drops are still okay, but better if you can be on time so no one has to wait for you to load in. If you think you will be late, please let me know.

Yep I'm pretty much doing what you outline in my current solo game. Got to about 6-7 colonies, starting to super specialize them. I have a world with 9 energy districts, one with mining, agr, etc, that I'm just full bore going resource production. Another planet just for research, one for general industry like alloy, consumer goods, gases, special minerals, etc. Planetary decisions and edicts are very useful in colony building with multiple ways to boost pop growth and immigration.

My biggest mistake in THIS game, was that I honestly didn't realize that 'City' was another district type to build. It looks so different from the energy / mining / agri squares on the UI I didn't realize it was an option. Lost out on a lot of easy housing in my specialized planets early on until I realized I could click on it and build more city districts... whoops.

I need to find a guide somewhere that outlines the negatives of going wide, I think it has a unity and/or tech malus, but its not really outlined anywhere very well.

    EDIT: Found it:

Admin Cap has a base of 30. Admin Costs are 1 per a district in your empire, 2 per a colony in your empire, and 2 per a system in your empire. In addition, Mega Corp Branch Offices have an Admin Cost of 1.5 per a branch office (display rounds down in game).

Each point you are over the admin cap does the following:

    - +0.5% Tradition costs

    - +0.3% Tech costs

    - +1% Campaign costs

    - +1% Leader hiring costs

    - +1% Leader upkeep costs

Meaning that the standard +20 admin cap modifier, if you use all of it, reduces your tradition costs by 10%, Tech costs by 6%, and Leader Upkeep, Leader Hiring, and Campaign costs by 20%.

This is for base empires. Mega Corps receive an additional 50% modifier so admin cap has the following effect for a point over:

    - +0.75% Tradition costs

    - +0.45% Tech costs

    - +1.5% Campaign costs

    - +1.5% Leader hiring costs

    - +1.5% Leader upkeep costs

Meaning that the standard +20 admin cap modifier, if you use all of it, reduces your tradition costs by 15%, Tech costs by 9%, and Leader Upkeep, Leader Hiring, and Campaign costs by 30%.

This also means that a Mega Corp that is over their Admin Cap by more than 40 is receiving more maluses than bonuses from the base effect. So know that your Admin Cap + 40 is your size limit for maintaining full advantage. Going above that will add a trade off to using all the Mega Corp effects.

Generally speaking, Day 2 went a lot better for us. Rav expanded his syndicate. Trev was caught offguard in a sudden border war with the Vogons, but he successfully rallied and defeated them. My faction finally turned the tide in the wars it had been losing in the southeast.

Thanks for to everyone for being on time. Our next meet will be on Sunday at 2pm EST. See you then!

It's more like I was Space Ukraine fighting against being the sacrificial pawn of two larger militaries (Blacksuns Compact vs. Skjaldborg Confederacy). Now that my borders are secure, I'm positioning to make the Blacksuns my bitch (the weaker of the two). Then the Skjaldborg is next. :viking:

    END OF DAY 3
    20181217145443_1.jpg
Laucivol continued his not-so-holy crusade to rid the galaxy of xeno scum despite a growing list of (npc) enemies that want to see him dead. Crave got his economy to stabilize and managed to expand north a bit. Benjamin used the wormhole network to expanded considerably into unclaimed territory while continuing to pump research into the L-Gates (and possibly doom us all). Trev faced a massive influx of "refugees" fleeing in the wake of Laucivols expanding war (and experiencing the drawbacks to being xenophilic). Hep's feces-themed faction seems intent on using squatters rights to make everyone's neighborhood smellier. Gabvid did an admirable job of getting David's faction more financial solvent, but after logging off, the AI took over and decided it took offense to the smell of literal shit. My faction finally took a huge bite out of the Blacksuns with the intent to vassalize their whole nation and firmly established itself as the regional powerhouse in the southeast.

Thanks to everyone who took part! We will meet again for Day 4 on Wednesday at 8pm EST. Come early! We will also be skipping next Sunday on account of it being almost Christmas to give people some breathing room to visit friends and family.
