There are some lingering issues that are expected to get patched later, but overall the reviews are looking pretty solid...

Due to many limitations with the Epic Store, officially, we are not encouraging anyone to pick this game up there, but if you do decide to jump in early, rest assured you will not be alone. I fully expect us to still have interest in this game a year from now when it leaves Epic exclusivity, so there is no need to rush in if you are on the fence about giving money to Epic.

So, I'm enjoying myself. As I mentioned in Discord, a lot of the interface and campaign systems were ripped straight out of HBS's Battletech, definitely a good thing.

It's a bit of an adjustment period to get used to this one from MWO. Tanks in particular are NASTY, and can sneak up behind up you and open your back with heavy guns if you don't keep your head on a swivel. I've come out of all 3 of the first set of missions with red armor everywhere cause of tank ambushes. I've only fought one mech to date, a spider.

The number of mechs included in the base game is actually quite a bit higher that I thought. There's at least 10 in every weight class, most of which have several variants.. Weapons do in fact have tiers, affecting RoF and heat, and some have variants. LRMs can be stagger or group fired, and AC's can be burst, scatter, or single shot depending on make and model. Your character's skill affects damage, heat dispersal, evasion, and defense; almost like an RPG.

Overall I don't regret the purchase so far.

Example of the mech screen for mediums.

Reviews saying solid game play, story/writing/voice acting horrendous? Sounds fine to me...

Sounds like MechWarrior. I mean have the games ever been known for story/voice acting and writing? 2 (2.5 games) are mercenaries games (previous) with essentially no story. Mw2 mercs, me 4 mercs and I'm counting 4 black night as the half.

3 expansion didn't really have a story that I recall.

Only think I've seen is people bitching about controls. Seems like not much joystick support yet.

Ouch. That's a shame considering how much I enjoyed HBS Battletech

I saw that too. It's a pretty bold statement considering there's a lot of objectively worse games out there. Critics can certainly be a hyperbolic lot. Personally, I'm not putting too much weight behind it until I see for myself. The general consensus is it's "good" and that's good enough for me until the modding community can crack it wide open (a MW5 editor was included with the game too)

The writing does the job. I've certainly seen worse.

I believe the editor isn't active till sometime next year. So why it was even in the release/package I don't know (unless that had more to do with some weird EGS thing then a PGI thing. I think it is. I say that because I have ALL 5 phoenix point DLCs in my EGS library and none of them are actually out).

Like they had to release anything that would be included in the base game (such as the editor) whether it was finished or not and couldn't be added to the base package later.

If it can be bought elsewhere other than the EGS store (even as an epic key) I might buy it (since supposedly co-op is not dependent on EGS). I don't want EGS to have my credit card info. or even paypal. or any of my money.

    YES.

"Epic will receive no revenue share from the sale of those games purchased through the Humble Store," the company said in a statement. "The partnership will launch with keys redeemable on the Epic Games store, and soon Epic will enable players to link their Epic and Humble accounts for direct purchasing."

apparently exlusive games will be on the humble store.

Mw 5 is kinda a reboot (not rewriting Anything previous but timewise) to the MechWarrior games.

    Mw1 3024-3028
    Mw2 and mercs 3044-3052 and 3057 (mw 2 is 3057. Mercs is the 3044-3052)
Mw 3 is the great refusal so 3059-3060
Mw4 no years given but it is all fedcom civil war.

So if mw 5 was going to keep that tradition it would have been late in the fedcom civil war or in jihad.

I think mw 4 vengeance kentares is actually part of the Sparks that cause the civil war. Sometime in 3061

I'm trying to figure out why people keep complaining about the story and acting being poor. I don't recall MechWarrior (the games) ever having a great story/acting.

I'm counting mechcommander and HBStech separately.

Have played the first 4-5 missions and am liking it. One of those games that are good but could have been so much better. But PGI though so expectations weren't that high to begin with. Battle damage is a bitch though, have not once come out of a fight without everything having to be repaired. Realistically that should be expected. Many times in HBS BT you come out of a major battle with just some armor loss. MW5 is more like what I'd expect to happen.

Yea I'm playing HBS BT right now and once you get to assault lances you can steamroll most 5 star missions without getting into internals if you're just smart about positioning and tanking.

I would say most of the people stating "graphics issues" are just graphics snobs and want basically every game to be Jedi fallen order level.

It's not really a reboot when you think about it, though. That would imply they are intentionally going to retell old stories. A reboot would be something like JJ Abrams' take on Star Trek. MW5 is its own thing with new characters. It's just starting at an earlier time in a shared fictional history. You could argue it's a "prequel", but that would imply it is somehow expanding on a story of characters already told (Star Wars prequels). This is very much a stand alone game, but all indications show it being consistent with the rest of the franchise.

Regarding MW4, yeah, it revolved almost entirely around the FedCom civil war (with some other contemporary events mixed in).

Now after playing the game, I've come to the conclusion that the audio and graphical snobbery is absolutely ridiculous. Sure, its not going to win the hearts of video game award judges, but fuck those people. Since when has Mechwarrior been about that? And the voice acting is entirely serviceable. Case in point: they have Adam-Fucking-Jensen as your fixer! I almost nerdgasmed when I heard his voice. I've played every damn Mechwarrior game in the franchise (yes... even the SNES ones) and after playing MW5 I can say this with complete honesty:

It might not be the Mechwarrior "you" wanted (speaking to the critics out there), but it's generally an improvement over all previous titles in the franchise. It's not perfect, but PGI made an actual, factual, damn "good game" here. And that is enough for a franchise that is literally older than the internet.

I also keep seeing in the Facebook group for MW 5 some guy saying "I have a super great computer and hotas setup and all the game does is crash on me. Fuck PGI it's all their fault". I just sit here going "it's either a dll error or he's fucked around with his system enough that yes his hardware is great but something he did set it outside the normal parameters which is what develeopers build using". They probably don't build with all that over clocking and crap.

anyone else surprised and go "oh. Wait that was my dad?" In the cutscene during the training/familiarization? I think it would have gone better to do that training. A few missions with Dad (like 2 or 3). Then a mission where that cutscene happens. As it is the revengeangle is meh. I had not attachment to dad as a character.
