I don't wish to discuss those things here, merely relaying an incident from day before yesterday and a loss of a friend over this whole thing. They say many more things I do not wish to get into. They've had SocDem prime minister since 2014 and now they are worried that they have relatively very few hospital beds per capita in their country when compared to other developed countries. Also there was news about their emergency reserves being quite unprepared. I feel sad for them, it's such a rich country with amazing technology and a country I was born in. Their culture is one of solidarity and "save all the cute things" but it's also conformist and authoritarian and as we all have our own shortcomings to them one would be to admit that their leadership has done a mistake - they tend to have a way of rationalizing mistakes as unavoidable to avoid confrontation. The interactions between Finns and Swedes (stereotypically) are quite funny, one group avoids saying negative things and confrontation and the other one starts the conversation with a "VITTU, everything's fucked up and none of this is going to work!" We tend to be a lot more crude and blunt, many Finns have through ages wanted to place Finland in the western Europe but really our ranks of commoners are above all eastern minded - patriotic but with deep cynicism which extends to the leadership which is still perhaps paradoxically respected out of pragmatic need of having a centralized leadership.
Well my county is going into "Shelter in place" Thursday morning... Which is what we have already been doing for a week. And in the press release their all Ok "social distance hasn't stopped the spread so we are going into Shelter in place". More like it has stopped the spread just more tests are being done. Wording people. Wording. Though there is an awful lot of people on the roads considering everything is closed.
I am at the us embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. We have a curfew and reduced daytime activity, and no non-mission essential movements off compound. That is mostly due to all the indirect fire we have had recently but also we had a local employee test positive for the virus. So now no locals are allowed on and several of the stores/restaurants are closed. They are trying to get non-essential personnel out of country but there are no flights, so waiting for state to do chartered a flight. Regardless, I am considered essential so I will be here until the end... Not to much to worry about though. People stateside have worse restrictions than me right now.
If your compound is hermetically sealed off right now like you said you should be good. You are probably much safer then a lot of people in the states right now that have jobs that are considered essential and are in constant contact with people. Someone just told me Trader Joe's announced they are closing all stores in the tri state area and will continue paying employees full pay at those locations. Ill believe it when I see it. Since a lot of the effected yankee states are doing a shelter in place order. People are flocking down to florida just like how people ran away from wuhan when it was going to be locked down. People started forming groups with attacking or killing any people they found from wuhan. The chinese government even put out a incentive to just turn them into the police by issuing a bounty of a 100 to 400 us dollars. which is a lot of money there.
Yea, even if everyone was bubbled up with magic instantaneously we'd still likely be getting 'new infections' up to more than two weeks from now with the variations in immunal response, individual condition and all the variables that apply. Also false negatives can happen. Also, on the "social distancing has no effect" - well, uh, you need quarantine measures to have any effect on spreading. Going to bars and 'sort of maintaining the distance part of the time' obviously has zero effect.

It is based off of the R0 which has been calculated out many times for this coronavirus with it being around 2.5 to 3 for most studies and 4.7 to 6.7 by the los alamos labs research. The quarantine is soft - people are allowed to go and work outside the quarantine zone when they have essential jobs or have personal reasons such as funerals or visiting rights, co-custody thing or so. Overwhelming majority of cases are in the capital and there has been a lot of social media posts of "let's go take a vacation before they impose a curfew", "let's party out" and "this only hurts the elderly". So, literally, the increased measures amount to baby sitting a bunch of retards. Not saying that the capital has exclusive rights to retards but in this particular situation it's their retards some of whom are carriers. We're in the same boat then. Just, right now isn't a great time for me because I've got this course to finish and I might be on the verge of landing a product development job - engineering and all. If I now had to go spend a month or so as a baby sitter I don't know how this would affect my unemployment compensation which is only for a limited time based on my old salary or how I might lose that potential job and all. It could hit us hard financially and there's no such a thing as "compensation for opportunity cost". It would suck and at that point we might have to consider if we can stay living where we do or face moving into the slums.
Its sad thousands of people are going to have to die for our government to pull its literal head out of its ass. Im sure trump is roaring to hear that the USA is #1 in the world... in virus cases though. I want to hear him try and wiggle his way out of this. Or he already knew it was going to get this bad so he let governors decide on what they need to do absolving himself of responsibility in his eyes.
Isn't... isn't the whole point of the US that each state can make most of their own decisions though? Like, there wasn't really much preventing each state from going into lockdown anytime they wanted for the most part, at least as I understand it.
There's nothing stopping state governments from locking down their own areas. I'm not actually certain the federal government even can tell them to without invoking wartime powers, which have a time limit of 3 months without congressional approval.

The problem is the amount of mixed signals coming from the top and the constant ignoring of medical officials. These mixed signals will cause people to not act accordingly. The cdc was also given special powers for situations like this that with a executive order to add covid-19 to a list of infectious diseases can apprehend and force people into quarantine, quarantine states off, and authority to control movement.
