Welp, I was thinking about going to an Index or G2, and now I'm sure.

They are deliberately trying to kill off the oculus.

Zero reasons on why a accessory device for a computer should require a social media account.

At the same time I get these warnings that allowing a website to access the Oculus is a security risk because it allows them to suck up all sorts of info that the system keeps readily available.

So looks like I have 2 years to make a full switch to Vive. Which is totally fine, Vive Pro has such a nice resolution anyway.

G2 all the way, the resolution sold me hardcore. Just waiting for my number to come up from the preorder now.

Hey, the Oculus's resolution but per each eye? How about that? And for the same price too!

Not so if you look at it through the lens of their belief that everyone should have a facebook account. That belief is most definitely wrong, but that doesn't change the fact that they believe they should use occulus to promote facebook rather than the other way around.

This is a common problem with larger corporations swallowing up smaller IPs; efforts on innovation and quality tend to become less of a focus in favor of simply promoting a larger market share for the parent company. It's the same reason why so many well known brands actually tend to be pretty mediocre.

I remember before Nokia went down one of their divisions produced a really good for it's time tablet. They could sell it for a very reasonable price too for the market's best price performance ratio.

The high end smart phone division got alarmed by that, it was going to challenge the premium smart phones by being superior in every way except small size for the same price. More money was being made with premium phones than tablets because they had not been making tablets yet so they reached a decision to smack a huge price hike on the tablet before releasing it to make absolutely sure it won't compete with their premium phones.

Only, their premium phones had completely fallen off the wagon by then and they only ended up killing their one shot to get to tablet markets. No one bought their ridiculously expensive tablet.

We all know how that went!

The problem however is that some corporations are so big and diverse that they simply end up with a bunch of monopolies and duopolies which will bankroll all of their failures so they don't actually learn or care about failing but insist that "it'll come around, it'll work out in time, you'll see". Using one or two divisions that actually do a pretty good job to fund some ridiculous crap that for some reason just won't be toned down.

Belief is a good way to describe it. Each organization has it's own internal belief systems and people that align with those beliefs tend to be favored in the evolutionary "who gets picked up" and those that have critical views of those beliefs tend to be selected against. For organizations are run by internal politics and there are camps and tribes and if you want to have your way and your vision to win the day you need to hire folks that will back you up and who you can count on not to sabotage your vision. The problem is that you've now got a whole bunch of people who all believe that certain approach is the way to go and if the situation changes or if they were all wrong to begin with - good luck convincing them their beliefs are false. Especially if there's already a power dynamic going on where another camp is trying to have a competing strategy implemented.

It quickly regresses to "we need to have our view win", "we need to beat those guys" - forgetting that it's actually a team effort where everyone is on the same side - everyone is trying to score for the organization. In worst cases it even results to spiteful infighting where you'll rather have the whole organization lose out than work out a compromise or give any concession to the others.

The only real downsides are that its FOV is about the same as the other 110deg ones and the hand tracking system isn't the absolute best but you can use the Index controllers with it so if you don't mind paying a bit more you will have the best visual with the best controller, and apparently there is a way to play existing oculus games with it if you already had an oculus product and bought anything through their store rather than steam.

Good to know. I haven't even done much anything with hand tracking since whatever hours I've been able to squeeze have been going to simulators and HOTAS controls and testing. I mean I tried the few demos with grabby touchy control stuff and so and while it could be nice for some shooters and puzzle games I can also see that it's still a really niche market "made for people with VR setup at home". Because "mech simulators" is not a niche :glee:

Now I read there's news of people having their bought content locked away from them due to the FB link and if they lose their FB account etc. as well as plans to move all the bought content to rely on the FB account.

Some insist that in EU this will cause a consumer rights legal case but in general - a company that is aligned like this? There are better alternatives that make better VR masks.

Was reading a article about FB banning people that are playing a couple games for oculus and are refusing to give up their data.

I haven't updated my Oculus to try to get away with it and all, wonder if I'll see myself banned.

Apparently one of the things they're after is getting to record all they can through the mic and sell those recordings forward.

See, when I bought my Rift, the promise was this was never going to happen. I should've known better than to trust a scummy company like Facebook.
