I've seen many cultural traditions with complex explanations, often resolving around things such as "I was meditating upon how short the cherry flower's blossoming is and..." or how a viking sits on a cliff watching thunder and lightning, how Indians interpret spirit dreams and how some African tribes had these fervent drummings in the background while the dancers reached a state of trance... But Finnish sisu is about whipping yourself to furious angry wrath and cursing so hard that Satan himself would find it excessive. And the effects are instantaneous and complete replenishment of your stamina, ignorance of any pain and increased strength.
"Suomalainen sisu." Finnish sisu. Man: "Jumalauta saatana!" 'God-help' (but a curse, more like goddamnit) satan! "...et pane kauaa kotikontujeni alla, perkele!" ... you won't be fucking for long under (the soil of) my homestead, perkele! "Jämpti on niin, perkele... jumalauta... *unintelligible*" And it is as so, perkele... God-help (goddamnit?)... ??? "Perkele! Kyllä jämpti on niin jumalauta! ...perkele...." Perkele! And it indeed is as so, God-help! (goddamnit) ...perkele... Dictionary Sisu Sisu is a Finnish concept described as stoic determination, tenacity of purpose, grit, bravery, resilience, and hardiness and is held by Finns themselves to express their national character. It is generally considered not to have a literal equivalent in English. Jumalauta Literally, "God help" or "God help me". Despite how it appears to translate it is a curse word when joined. If it were "Jumal, auta" it would mean "God please help me". It's use is like an exclamation and while it implies that it would be good if God would render some assistance it is typically employed more in the sense of a defiance against hardship or alternatively as an exclamation of some degree of desperation in face of adversity in a manner of irritated frustration and anger. Though a sense of despair and need of assistance is also implied. Saatana Satan. The mere mention of Satan is a common curse. Often intensified by combining it with other words such as "saatanan paska" -literally Satan's shit or "helvetin saatana" -literally Satan of Hell. Commonly also "saatana perkele" and of course "jumalauta saatana". Perkele Evil spirit or variation of words "god damn" in Finnish and is a popular Finnish profanity. It has a history of being used as a curse: a cry for the god for strength. It still is a common curse word in vernacular Finnish. To a Finn, the word entails seriousness and potency that more lightly used curses lack. Also, when the Research Institute for the Languages of Finland held a popular contest to nominate the "most energizing" word in the Finnish language, one of the suggestions was Perkele because "it is the curse word that gave the most strength for the reconstruction of Finland after the wars."
