    About half the book is reference material (important for creating scenarios). If you are unfamiliar with the franchise, I encourage you to at least read the Introduction. If you want to jump straight to the gameplay rules, focus your attention here:
    • Core Rules for Players = pages 26-57
    • Rules for Gamemasters = pages 58-67
    • Character Creation = pages 68-78
    • Vehicle Creation/Conversion = pages 79-82
    I want to plan a regular activity out of this. I invite you all to join me. The more the merrier. If we get enough people, we can run multiple groups with more than one GM. MWD is a rule system that scales very well.

    I'm hoping to limit sessions to 1-2 hours. MW: Destiny plays unlike anything else you've played in the franchise. It's far faster and easier to get into. And the nature of it means that you don't have to make every session. Just the ones you can afford to.

    Session Zero Goals:
    1. Q&A session; exists to help players get ready for the campaign.
    2. More than just for “character creation”, but also that too.
    3. Talk with players about expectations for the upcoming campaign and plan accordingly.
    4. Don’t worry about player class; use NPCs or loot to balance out parties.
    5. Keep character creation simple and fair if new players are present.
    6. “Standard Array” method is recommended for most balanced play.

    No prob. I'm hoping to not make this a thing that demands too much of a commitment; a couple hours a week is what I'm hoping for, but nothing mandatory. For those who just want to observe, I do plan to stream everything (maybe even record it?). You are always welcome to sit in for whatever crazy bullshittery we get into :)

    The update was just the post announcing our Session Zero. I took notes from the meeting, but I think I forgot to post them. Will dig those up asap.

    We pretty just need to have everyone make characters at this point, but we are in a holding pattern until after I finish my move.

    That being said, I could be down to GM more immediately for some one-shot exhibition games if people are motivated. That's on y'all, though.

    Mechwarrior 5 and Mechwarrior Destiny ‘Session Zero’ discussion

    MW5 AND MWD INTERGRATION - consensus is we will NOT be intergrating the two.
    • [*]What level of integration do we want? Or do we want them as separate things?
      • Need solid feedback!
      • Combining MW5 and MWD is possible, but will require the greatest amount of cooperation from everyone for all systems to work together.
      [*]*Organized* Mechwarrior 5 campaign characteristics:
      • MW5 can be as structured or informal as we want it to be, but...
      • Key word: “ORGANIZED”. If not organized, it is no different than what we’ve been doing up to now.
      • Will require a few dedicated lance leaders to host sessions with the same 3 players (with maybe the occasional stand-in).
      • Attendance will need to be fairly consistent, otherwise what's the point?!
      • All groups can agree to follow the same rules or commit to their own, however, the latter may limit greater RP options.
      [*]Mechwarrior: Destiny characteristics
      • MWD will require more hands-on support from GM.
      • On its own, requires far less commitment and Is free to everyone.
      • Player sessions can be more fluid in terms of player count and times.
      • Will offer a lot more flexibility in what we can or cannot do. Mostly limited by our imaginations and time.
      [*]Integration of MW5 and MWD:

      • Will benefit MW5 more than MWD (MWD will have to fit within constraints of MW5)

      • Is possible, but again, only if people are really motivated to make it happen.
      [*]Recommended Alternative Plan:

      • Allow groups of individuals to organize their own MW5 sessions, GM can provide guidance as needed, but will otherwise take a hands-off approach. At the same time, GM can devote more time to MWD. This will allow the greatest amount of flexibility for our members.

    • Where to start?
      • Planned exhibition games to practice MWD during holiday season.
      • Start campaign in earnest at the beginning of new year. (after move; eta April)
    • Old vs. New Characters Suggestions:
      • Start at the very bottom with all new characters to get used to MWD.
      • Opportunities will be provided later to re-introduce old characters as long as they fit the setting.
    • Player Character Death
      • Death should be consequential, but not punishing:
        • PC still dies, but any surviving gear owned by them can be passed on to a new character.
        • New PCs can start with *most* of the XP from the previous PC.
      • Embrace death of characters!
        • Players should be encouraged to write “wills” to inheritors which can be read out loud at the next session for entertainment value.
    • Campaign will *attempt* to be tailored around PC histories and abilities.
      • weave as much of PC histories into narrative as possible.
      • give opportunities for a wide range of skills in all scenarios.
      • aim for equal opportunity to combat-focused and noncombat-focused PCs.
