The game is out and I'm having a blast. Lv15 and unlocking more and more weapons.

Armor and weapons are modeled very well. Armor can completely deflect an attack, partially deflect and take item-health damage, or fail to deflect at all. Wounds can bleed. Bleeding can be bandaged. The seemingly short list of armor types is surprisingly deep when you get into the additions you can put on them. The crappy, open-faced 'bullet-head' helm has a visor that you'd never know about until you purchased the basic helm (awkward interface, really. Needs work).

Weapons can block attacks, but have health just like armor. Weapons can be modified in the loadout editor with different materials, weights, and edges to alter their swing-speed, health, and damage dealt. Weapons with dual-heads (a spiked axe or warhammer) have a toggle that lets you flip them to deal the appropriate damage against an opponent (piercing for plate, blunt or cutting for lighter armor).

Bows and crossbows are a treat. Headshots can award you with an instant kill, bonus gold and xp, and a kill-cam for your target (to let them know who sent them on their way). Physics for shots is decent and the mechanics of the aim, shot, and reload are well done. Bows can be reloaded on the run, but are difficult to hold drawn and on target (without perks). Crossbows are effortless to aim (no time limit), but require you to stop and (no joke) play a reloading minigame with the cranequin. A ring with geared teeth pops up and you click when the hook is over the teeth. This speeds up the reload and lets you compete with bowmen. Perks for both types of missile weapon are available.

Getting killed sucks, and it's gonna happen. A lot. But it's not over when you're on the ground. When you're 'knocked down', as the game puts it, you're only incapacitated. Friendly units can rush in and revive you (for a healthy bonus in gold) and bandage you up (or let you do it). If your respawn timer is up, and no one is helping you back onto your feet, you may yield and beg for mercy. This sends you back to the respawn screen and kit selection.

This is, of course, only what happens if the enemy is merciful or otherwise occupied. Should no one come to your rescue, your opponent may perform an execution on you. Pinning you to the dirt and dispatching you (for their own bonus $$) in a short cutscene which you are helpless to stop. Brutal.

War of the Roses is very much a melee simulator with a good deal of arcade-y fun mixed in to appeal to an action-crowd. It isn't exactly like M&B, but it does a damn good job reaching for the bar M&B set so may moons ago.

Yea I got dropped in a fight with you. Fun stuff, should get some more levels later this week. Also, nothing more fun than shooting an enemy lancer's horse in the head and watching him flip over on it.

I recall that match. My very first game against live players and I seem to recall receiving a few executions from you.

No hard feelings, Tzeentch. In fact, I'd like to introduce you to a friend of mine. Her name is 'Fryd'.

It's Awesome when you have two archers working in tandem. During the fight with Varg I was on the ground and we had another archer on a shed roof. If anyone went for the archer up top or seek shelter in the shed I would fire at them. If they came after me I would bring up my shield and get as close to them as possible to make their swings weak, and the other archer would unload into their back. We got 14 kills like that at least before they sent out archers of their own.

Definitely. Working together may feel like ganging up for an unfair advantage when you find someone on their own, but you'll find that it's pretty difficult to all be on the same target and not end up killing each other in the process. It's best to use numbers to block opponents in and let one or two of your number carve them up.

Duel servers, "[FC] Fight Circus" in particular, are great for getting practice in. Provided the CoD kids have gone to bed or are too busy 'paying rent' for their mom's basement. When people follow the 'rules' on those servers, fights are one-on-one, with more structure. You issue or accept a challenge by blocking 'up' or waving your shield at someone and then go to work. If the server is twit-free, you normally fight until one of you is on the ground. Sometimes you get executed, sometimes not.

My only question is have the servers gotten better in release? For this and Chivalry the servers were absolute crap when I found time to play during the beta's.

I'm sensing hostility. Anybody else sense hostility?
