Ok well I got my 680 in December, dead pleased with it. Now I learn that the 780 is coming out in March. Please tell me I have not made a school boy blunder and should now cry myself to sleep? The 7 series is a revision right, not a total change in fabrication process etc? I mean they aren't magically going to release a 780 which will double the frame rate of the 680 will they?

    Curse progress!

I'd say it's not an error... the 780 will cost a substantial amount of money. Sure the 6xx series will go down in price a bit faster than usual after it's release, but you wouldn't have been gaming with it for approaching 4 months if you'd waited...

If my current card wasn't able to cut it, you better believe I'd have a 670/80 in my computer right now and not be looking back worrying at all. I had been saving up and waiting on surround support in MWO to buy a 670, by the time that rolled around the 680 was at the same price as the 670 was at. Now I'm sitting here and realizing that I have a playable frame rate on my old card, I might as well wait on the 700's to come out and either get a cheap 680 or splurge on a 700.

780 will be an improvement over the 680, as was the 650 Ti an improvement over the 560 Ti. That's what technology advancing is all about. However, there is nothing wrong with the 680. It's a solid card that will stay reliable for years to come. You can't sit on your hands expecting the latest and greatest that won't see improvement/upgrade because you'll be sitting on your hands forever. Enjoy the card and don't think about what's new or what will be new in the future. You'll just stress yourself out over inevitable progress.

Well I guess I'll just suck it an see. I admit I have become an Nvidia fan boi now, which probably led me to spending around £900 with them in the last 24 months. The less said about that the better.

Reading the reviews I am told the follow on card from the 7 series will be a stonker and include a lot of silicon specifically designed to do a lot of CPU work. Sounds spangly. Very spangly.

The problem is, I actually enjoy building the damn things. Not quite sure why but it is immensely satisfying doing open heart surgery on a PC. If I could get a part time job doing that I would be chuffed as nuts.

Yes, it is likely the 780 will have superior performance to the 680. That being said I would not call owning a 680 a mistake by any means, as far as benchmarks are concerned you have the most powerful single gpu video card for gaming on the market. Furthermore, I would guess that the 780 will be a refinement of the kepler architecture introduced with the 600 series rather than another jump such as from the 500 series fermi to kepler. What does this mean? Well there will likely be performance gains and perhaps a greater focus on kepler's weak areas (compute performance) but the difference between a 680 and a 780 won't be as significant as a 580 to a 680. Again, this is mostly postulation on my part as I've yet to see benchmarks but rest assured that you own a video card that is more than capable of tackling any game on the market and will continue to be able to do so for years.

There is one way to be up to date, get a business license, open up an electronic store, file some paper work with computer parts manufactures, then some companies will let you purchase prototypes of their products for evaluation. Then my friend ... you will be up to date ... until they release something new.

but normal plebs like me do not have the money to do anything like that.

From what I am reading on the web, no matter how good the 7 series cards from Nvidia are, or how good the 8000 series are from AMD, both are going to be comprehensively blown out of the weeds by the upcoming Maxwell architecture due to release in 2014. Allegedly this gpu will have an even smaller fabrication process, and an on-die CPU of sorts, to assist the GPU with its work and allowing better performance with the actual CPU and motherboard/chipset.

Of course, by that time you will also need to be saving your pennies because PCI-E SSD drives will have come of age and actually be fairly affordable, or so they claim.

Next upgrade for myself will probably be Ivybridge-e, provided they offer a sensible cpu for the right money. I'm not spending £400 on a cpu, no matter what it is. Maybe some 2000mhz RAM or something at the same time, or who knows, maybe a whole new mobo for a change lol.
