Just sat through another episode of Gundam Unicorn and have decided I hated it. Too much half-baked socio-political commentary about how "war is bad" and "i have to protect my friends".

Newtypes are fucking cancer to plot development.

at least when amuro had his attack of consience bullshit was not in any of the animes. It was between 0079 and the zeta series.

Gundam was always about war being bad.

    Gundam unicorn is no different

The idea of who is friend or foe changes throughout the show.

And he only really fights for one thing which you don't find out till later and that's Minerva zabis tight pussy.

That's not my problem. My problem is that Gundam as a franchise has done a shit job of growing with its original demographic. There is more to say than simply "war is bad, friendship is magic". It keeps digging up the same old tired tropes and it bores me. Unicorn is nothing new I haven't already seen. The main characters are all just stand-ins for other characters we already know. I cared so little I couldn't be bothered to keep track of names. Even the pretty fights annoy me; they are mostly exposition with no substance nor context.

Used to like Gundam as a kid. Just annoyed there is nothing for me there anymore. Need more "Real Robot" options.

Best I've seen is MS 8th Team and Thunderbolt.

Can't help but notice the very obvious parallels to Cowboy Bebop in the second one, though.

    Real robots huh..

Atom The beginning, just started this season. It is the prequel to Astro Boy.

If you want a show with substance look up Grimgar of fantasy and ash. It's a dark fantasy anime in which the characters have a much more realistic reaction to things in a world they have no familiarity with. It is a little slow paced that focuses more on the characters then just crazy shiny fight scenes like most anime in the same genre like SAO and all the rehashes of SAO.

It's news to me, but apparently Thunderbolt got a really GOOD dub treatment recently and has a second "season" coming soon. Wasn't expecting this, but I actually like it more now that I understand what's going on. It still has a bit of "Weapon X" vs. "Weapon Y", but that is spaced out well between the real struggles of average people and everyone involved comes with very real flaws and limitations. Everything from personal tragedies, to drug addiction, to physical trauma, to the burden of command is covered better than most previous attempts. Even the experimental mobile suits feel squishy and expendable. The show feels less like another boring power fantasy and more like a true cautionary tale.

Probably the best damn Gundam show I've ever seen.

    Highly recommended:

(they went a little too liberal with the "free jazz" tracks for my personal tastes, but still really good overall)

There is supposed to be a new gundam coming next season I think it is supposed to have a much more real and dark tone like thunderbolt.

Gundam suffers from being a shonen anime. Basically it's ment for young boys. Thunderbolt however is a sennin anime which is targeted towards older males like 20s to 30s. It's why all the main characters are the ages they are in each one. It's also why when they bring the kid pilots in thunderbolt you almost can't help laughing because of the set tone because they just seem like a joke. And that is how most older anime fans feel.. That kid pilots are a joke.

    edit for grammar

I do love how they keep going back to the one year war. What little there was in that preview that one looked a little bit like the Mk II from the zeta series.

It's actually a few months after unicorn, main protagonist is a girl in weapons development and a pilot buddy with both being remnants of Zeon. Main antagonist is a male cyber newtype piloting a gundam.

Beyond that I don't know anything.

Well it airs sometime late June this year.

it's pretty, but so is most gundam shows these days. would really have to hear the dialog before i could decide if i like it.

One thing gundam hasn't done that would be a really nice change is have a strong female as the main character

True. I don't know if i'd consider the chjck from war in the pocket strong. Better than most of the other females in the whole gundam universes. Though that was so short i don't know how much it would count either.

I would say my top 4 gundam series are 8th ms team, stardust memory, the original first one (0079 one year war? Not sure what the actual title is) then war in the pocket. Char's counter attck would be there but is a strict movie. It would be second if i included it in the list.

    Looked it up some more

From what I know now it is supposed to be adult themes.. No kiddy stuff here. People gunna die.

And it's six episodes long. Five of them are three minutes and one is eight minutes.
