Buying ARMA II just for DayZ is disgusting.

Perhaps. Thanks to Steam I always have a back log of games to play for a rainy day. Rest assured, I will play Arma II... eventually...

You can buy the steam version of arma2 from the arma2 website for £10 cheaper then it is on steam.

ARMA II CO is the exact same on steam and the Bohemia Interactive Site.

Just to make the rest of you super jelly...

My previous game ended sadly. I got to a town, had access to an enfield and a double barrell, but got greedy in my exploration and took some hits. I had plenty of bandages, but was down to 3000 blood. I decided to commit suicide, unable to see and fairly surrounded.

I restarted near one of the cities, spotted an enterable building - unfinished construction site, lots of stuff, but only able to use a hatchet. It was 3 stories so I climbed to the roof to see if I could spot another building. I was prone and wanted to take a closer look at a petrol station, so I started to use the peek function and unceremoniously action rolled to my death.

    Here's the jelly part:

Another restart. I spawned near some buildings, but none were open and I aggroed a zed so I booked it to the woods, unsure of where I was. The woods ended and opened up into large open fields and bare hills with only scant trees. It was night time and visibility was very limited, but I still felt very exposed out in the open. I moved from tree to tree, paranoid of snipers, and noticed a group of three trees ahead.
"If I had a tent, that's where I would hide it, covered from sight but out in the open" I thought... making my way there... holy shit. A tent.

I quickly raid it, scared there may be a sniper using it as bait. I book it for the tree line and flip around, facing the tent to see if anyone comes back, and go over my loot!

From memory: DMR rifle - 2 clips, GPS, my first map, gulie suit, matches, watch, hand gun, bandages, morphine shot, epi-pen, 2 blood bags and few more odds and ends.

Not bad for my first haul! I got up and kept booking it. I've not encountered another bandit to date, and have never fired a weapon either, so facing off against such a well equiped player seemed like a big risk to take. Quite pleased with my stolen loot, I just wanted to put a few clicks behind me and get to safety. Using my new GPS, I headed for the nearest town - Pavlovo . When I got there, it started to rain (and still dark out) and I knew I'd have to log off in a half hour or so. Rather than risk it, I hunkered down in the woods to the west and logged off, ready for my raid.

It's a tremendous find so early on, but what I don't have is food, soda, a canteen, or a hatchet - all things I've known in my limited experience to be important finds early on. But who am I to complain... I've got a sniper rifle, 40 rounds, and the best camo out there.

You can hunt for your food, meat is the best to eat as it fills you up and give you back lost blood. You can hunt any animal you see, you need a hunting knife, matchs, fire wood, or you can chop firewood from trees with a axe. best places to hunt is up north out in the wildness so no players hear you shot or zeds. you can refill you waterbotttlers at any lake or pond you find, You dont need to go into any towns to survive.

I think in Pavlovo you find a supermarket, lots of food and matchs in it, but be carful as zeds spawn next to it, also across the road from the supermark is a 4 story bulding, a school or officers, its is full of loots with tons of ammo in it.

    Good luck.

Strang must be UK only then, as me and all my mates got CO from the bohemia site as it was £10 cheaper.

00dlez you suck! I have yet to have a weapon that fires..ive had a crow bar (that i passed up for an axe), axe, hunting knife. The HK is only for skinning animals you kill for food. So the axe actually doubles as wood gathering AND a weapon, which is great. Its amazing how completely different you feel when raiding or sneaking around and actually HAVE a weapon. To not be able to punch/kick something to dead is just stupid...to have zero way of defending yourself. And to those that argue 'you cant punch a dead man to death' in this game isnt a valid argument, because 2 or 3 body shots kill a zed as well..which we all know that wont happen.

I have yet to run into any good luck in that game..but once i can find a decent server not filled with hackers or cheating admins, Ill stick with it.

What server are you running on?

and like he said, i bought Arma II for the game, but I will actually play Arma II as well...it looks like an interesting game! Plus DayZ will be its own game eventually seperate (and evolved) from what Arma II engine can provide. Like Zed actions...the reason they 'book it' after you is because thats what the enemies in Arma II do...they'll change up the Zed actions and abilities quite a bit with the standalone version. And allow them to run indoors too im sure.

I took a look around Pavolo over my lunch break, only found 1 enterable building - a shed - and got a soda out of it... Where is this supermarket? It was night time so maybe I just missed it, but I didn't see much of anything of worth in the town.

My rifle is nice, but it is semi auto and has no iron sights (goes straight to scope making it tough to use at close range). The town is crawling with zeds, so I'm assuming there is something there... might just need to spend some more time in the area.

I still have no food, though, so unless I can spot something quickly I may need to move on to larger cities. Until I get a hatchet I can't make wood and therefore cannot cook hunted game... right?

I am going to team up with a few guys i met on the dayz forums...just random people that wanted to group. if you want to play too let me know. i have only put in about a days worth of play time though (maybe 6 hours). I still would rather put time into MWO...but this is just a fun change of pace a few days at a time.

also, you play on your lunch break...at home? or did you install the game on a work system? that would be hilarious and fun..however being on a gov't network even with my admin levels id be subject to interrogations lol

I work close to home so I head over there for some soothing game time over a bowl of noodles.

Hope the forum buddies work well for you and they don't just use you and stab you in the back for your share of loot... I'd never work with strangers, even though I'm sure many are good natured if they are reaching out on the forums.

I dont want to fight or be a bandit in DayZ, but I've pretty much already decided that if I ever spot another player I'll be shooting first and shooting to kill... Not worth the risk.

Exception being if its a RL friend or someone from here.

And yeah, it's just a distraction. Once I get to a point in the game where I have no immediate needs or threats I will start to loose interest; I think the fun of it is the struggle to get to an survival equilibrium more than getting a helicopter with rockets, instead of a crappy car

Looked into this game, however, it seemed.. well dull after a point. Sure the first part of the game looked great, survival ext, but once you have your gun, food and drink... theres nothing really to do. No end point :/

Aye, we will see how long it holds my interest. The only things I dont have at this point are a tent and a vehicle... both of which are certainly non-essential

Where the hell were you all last month, huh?!

Glad to see people getting interested in this. :p

Right now, I play in the early AM with a buddy from work. We recently had to pack up all our stuff and change servers (server owner stopped paying the bills) and have set up on US 1182.

The camp's just tents for now, but is in a good spot for survival and extended raids. We'll be setting up long-range camps in the near future, but don't have any misconceptions that this is all temporary. Chances are a wipe will come soon, so don't get attached to your gear.

For anyone on the fence or interested, I recommend using DayZ Commander to install and run the mod. It does a good job keeping stuff updated and is great for finding servers. A lot less hassle all around.

As for shooting on sight: If I'm not spotted, I keep them in view, but won't be the aggressor. If I'm spotted, but have position/superior armament, I make it clear that the fight won't go well for them and I pull a fade.

If I'm shot at and see them, they get dead. If I don't see where it's coming from, I run like hell.

I'll start playing on 1182 then, no where near you guys at the moment, but who knows.

Saw my first other player today... booking it top speed through the woods with zed in tow. I proned and let him pass.

I can navigate the map easily enough to meet you almost anywhere. Just a matter of searching and we'll find a vehicle or two.

I'll be at work tonight til "god-knows-when" AM. Will get in touch with you if I can.

well i was doing fine (1407) and it started as a day time run. or evening i guess. because after hooking up with some random guy that i saved his life (he ran from 4 zeds, i killed all of them with my axe). then we get into a town and are under fire. we book it. get to the next town, on the edge of it. it starts getting dark out. he lays down to do his rejuivinating (you can use 1 soda or 1 pasta thing or something and use it forever, theres a glitch if you know how..i just found out lol). but after i ran off a bit to kill zeds, i was a few buildings away and heard gun shots. i hid inside somewhere, closed the doors, and all of a sudden saw people dying on the logs to the left. cant remember which one his name was...so i assumed the worse.

i moved on, sneaking around, being careful, and came across a warehouse. was about to step in (crouched) and POW! a sniper bullet to the head from no where....it was so quiet all i heard was the headshot sound lol. son of a bitch. i even had all the vehicle parts on me and plenty of ammo.

now ill start over. but the servers are mssed up...my time zone was showing night time when it was day. i heard the times are not right at this time...and i hate starting out in night.

ill try 1182...1407 seemed to have a good crowd, clean server...but lots of pvp apparently.

    What a wild night.

I went to do a night raid on the airfield in the northwest. I was starting to cross the runway when I hear a chopper.... Then see a chopper... I hug a bush in the middle of the runway, and watch it land on the other side of the airfield. Pulling out my DMR I scoped in to watch what was going on. At least 2, maybe 3 (its night time remember) silhouettes run back and forth and eventually start killing zeds. I continue to watch through my sniper scope. One goes down while another fights near by. Then my chance comes, he stops to bandage his buddy, silhouetted for the world to see. It's clear by now they have no idea I'm there, so I hesitate on the trigger. What if there are more... what if I miss... In that moment, another zed came up behind the bandaging survivor... I fire and the zombie drops.

What a nice guy I am, right?

They start firing again, seeming confused. I just hit the deck. I'm several hundred yards away and in a gulie suit at night, they cant spot me... from the ground. I hear the chopper powering back up, only this time it has green and red running lights and a dust cloud under it as it begins to take off.

    That's when I see what's happening.

They have a search light under the chopper and I'm prone in the open.

I get up and start booking it for the trees, but I cant make it! The light swept over me, but the light didnt seem stable as the chopper moved and I was in darkness again, about halfway to the trees. I changed directions slightly and kept going. I got caught again, changed direction again and kept going. This time I made it to the treeline and crouched in a pine tree. The light caught me again, and not wanting to chance it I kept moving. This time along the treeline away from where they landed. The chopper kept sweeping the immediate area but I was far enough away that I proned just off the tree line to continue to watch. The chopper landed, only briefly this time, then took off heading NNE. I tried to spot where it landed but it went out of sight.

I couldn't see anything, not even well enough to loot properly, so I found a gap in the fence and quit for the night. Very tense, with likely more encounters to come!

Yup! I looked at the helicopter page on the wiki and just to have the materials to repair one means these guys had been playing for quite some time. To think if I had been more of the bandit mentaility I could have really ruined their day.

I'm at the point where I won't starve any time soon, so really I just need a good amount of ammo, a tent, and a base camp.

Also, I went to 2 helicopter crashes (marked 'swag' on my stolen map) but couldn't figure out where the loot was or how to get it (it was dark). Anyone know how to do it?
