Well theres also that (I assume in many militaries probably not all) that if all things are equal (rank, rating etc) pay is equal.

 

I have never watched any of his shows, appears there was quite the drama going on in the background of his shows.

I think that if he's being taken as "the know it all" authority in home improvement without actually being anywhere near the top and not necessarily ever claiming to be, that would be a close equivalent.

A person who never made the claim of being an authority in one's field but is perceived to being not just an authority on one's own field but beyond it because one has plenty of time to spend showing up in various TV shows and being popular.

Also at some point stating that one is merely a run-of-the-mill guy in the field would be harmful for personal income as the status as popular icon "our modern Einstein" / "Einstein II" can be very lucrative.
