    Escape velocity is 36,000 ft/s and the muzzle velocity of the Navy's 32MJ railgun is only 8,000 ft/s. So the lesson here should be that you were never going to hit the moon, and you were a fool to even try.

    Also, even if you were to obtain escape velocity with a projectile, if you were pointing at the moon you'd be guaranteed to miss as the projectile would arrive there 11 hours later, you'd have to shoot for where the moon will be in 11 hours as it takes 10.94etc hours for a projectile travelling at 36000 ft/s to travel the 238000 miles to the moon. So really, unless your projectile is going more than 11 times escape velocity you're pretty much doomed to failure, as the moon travels 2288 miles an hour and only has a diameter of 2159 miles. So in the space of an hour the moon is no longer where you were aiming.
