I recorded a quick video tutorial for people who were having trouble taking off and/or landing in the Stuka- note that I did it with a joystick and in Simulator battles difficulty (i.e. locked cockpit view) but mouse users who were having trouble may still find it to be of use in the areas of correct takeoff and landing speed, use of flaps (i.e. don't use them to take off!), use of airbrakes, post-takeoff handling etc.

Here it is, hope it's useful to those of you who were having issues:

Incidentally I strongly recommend the use of test flight mode to practice if you feel uncomfortable in an aircraft, I think I have around 40% of my total airtime flying solo in test flight mode and I can say it's been worth every second (yes, even the boring climbing to altitude to practice divebombing because eventually it becomes automatic and you don't need to think about it at all, which takes pressure off in actual sorties).

My attempts to calibrate my joystick and test fly realistic have been miserable failures, thus far

Open up War Thunder, go to menu->controls, hit the "Export to File" button on the bottom left (floppy disk icon) and save the file to your desktop or wherever's convenient, then attach the file to a PM to me or put it on dropbox and send me the link, however you want to send it and I'll have a look at it and see if I can work out what's wrong. :)

Mostly it seems to be pitch. I pull back, and the plane does not seem to go to full pitch

Here's mine; it should look like this when you double-click Pitch Axis in Controls.

If those values are the same as yours, I assume you've tried bumping up Pitch Sensitivity in controls? If that's on maximum and you're still getting a lack of responsiveness from pitch controls, it may be your joystick in which case I can't help you. :/

Dihm, make sure the 'multiplier' in Deathwatch's screenshot above is at least set to 1. Essentially, its the ratio of stick movement to the full motion of your control surface, so a value of 1 will mean a full movement of the stick equates to the full potential movement of the control surface. Anything less than 1 you actually can't get to the full value. Also, if you're having issues with pitch, try increasing this, it will mean you will hit maximum extension of the control surface before you get to the full motion of your joystick.

Also anyone who wants to know exactly what all those values means, here's a good warthunder forums link with explanations (need to be logged in to view):

Also, especially since we fly the not-so nimble Stukas, some basic group maneuvering tactics would be good to practice.

I propose the Thach Weave to start, its something you can pull off with 2 people (or more) to defend each other against attacks.

Essentially the idea is that when you are attacked, the pair turn away from each other, and then turn back toward each other. When the planes cross the plane being attacked should be in the 'front' so the plane not being attacked can take a shot at whoever is on their tail. You keep repeating this weave pattern and it makes it difficult for opponents to score a kill without being hit. It won't be as effective in WT as real life as people aren't as afraid of being shot, but it should still potentially score us a kill or two where we would've just been shot down by enemy fighters.

    SQUADRON LOGBOOK:
    24 January 2014

GMT-timers this time, a nice, balanced mix between divebombing, impromptu dogfighting and tankhunting.

From today I think it's time we put a bit more emphasis on tankhunting in the Stuka Gs and Hs 129s; it's good fun and makes a change from divebombing. Also, it was brought to my attention that the Stuka G-1 now has the same 24 rounds for its 3.7cm Bordkannone as the G-2, so the only difference between them now is as it was in reality; the G-1 using a D-3 model airframe as the base and the G-2 using a D-5 airframe. Try both, see which one you prefer.

The Hs 129s are a great success; the centreline 75mm cannon is apparently easier to hit with than the G variant Stuka's wing-mounters. The sound is also something to behold.

    PRIVATE LOG; FLIEGER WARGTASS
    January 24th, 2014

Being on loan from the SG1 to Kommodore Deathwatch's SG2 certainly has its perks. Seeing as his Geschwader is practicing for their introduction of Panzerknackers and Focke Wulfs to their Staffels, high command saw it fit that I do a tenure in SG2 to show them the ropes. My transport has been delayed for two whole weeks to the frustrations of my new Kommodore.

Tonight then, finally, I was able to join them for two training missions, the first over Malta were I mostly observed how they fly their Stukas from my FW-190. After that I joined the fray in Stalingrad with my Hs-129 B3 to earn a few tanks knocked out.

When we joined the real battle I was able to earn some cheers from my new comrades in the SG2, using my skill with the 7,5 cm Bordekanone to destroy some half a dozen tanks or more. I was joined by Flieger Naemorian and Sheogorath, each flying a Hs-129 of their own and I was impressed by their skills. Certainly we will bring many victories to the Geschwader.

Foolish me, I began my evening with a big glass of wine. While pondering the Germanic Campaign of the late Roman Empire (Rome II: Total War) I was assailed by our kommodore Deathwatch who had taken ill over the evening. Me and Flieger Killbox were put on alert in case we had any sorties for the evening. In the end me, Flieger Bluescuba, Flieger Fiskarsmurfen and auxillary Flieger Nuwisha flew a few missions with mixed success. At least we had a few laughs at my wine-slurred orders...

    Hi guys.

As you know, I've been indisposed the last two weeks for medical reasons and unable to lead sorties. As I understand it, attendance is a little lacklustre for both timezones. I understand if you don't feel like flying every week, and rather than badger you all to show up to sorties so regularly I was considering making them fortnightly (biweekly) rather than weekly. How does this sound to everyone?

I'll make a quick message in the conversation thread to poke everyone here so everyone sees this.

    Cheers,

    -GK Deathwatch

    Flieger Wargtass approves!

Btw, does the site still have a calendar? Perhaps you have already done so, but it would probably be easier for us all to keep track of the evenings if these sorties were put up there.

Alright, I have an apology to make.

I've sort of unofficially had to put SG 2 things on hold for the past... what, 2 weeks? due to personal issues, mainly, and I've got a lot going on. So, sorry for that.

Regardless, I intend to restart regular SG 2 activities next week (week starting 10/03), which means the usual 6pm GMT flyout on Friday and the also-usual 8:30pm EST flyout on Saturday are both a go.

Also, from now on flyouts will be fortnightly (i.e. on a week, off a week, on a week etc.). :)

Thanks for your patience and I hope to see all of you in the air very soon (preferably streaking straight towards a Soviet tank with bomb/37mm/75mm guns in tow :D).

Sounds good, I may not be able to be on until 9, but I will try to be there.
