Let me start by saying I'm not taking about bad games here. We've all had a game that we really enjoyed, and had a bunch of people to play with, and we have an awesome time every time we boot it up. And then we don't.

You come home / wake up one day and go "nah, not feeling it today." And that's it. you never touch it again.

Why's that happen for everyone? I want to know if it's similar reasons or if everyone here has a different trigger point where a game just stops being fun.

For me, it usually happens when I fall behind everyone with more time/focus and the pressure to keep up starts driving everything I do in game. Eventually I hit a point where I'm not doing anything but playing catch up every time I log on. Burn out usually follows quickly afterwards.

Some random schlep decides to hop into a game room full of peeps, tells them he's playing this other game. Everyone follows suit, leaving me the sole player of the previous game. This is getting very irritating.

For me it is basically what you posted. Job hours change or relationship status changes and I no longer have the time to put into keeping up with the rest of the guild/group and slowly fall behind. Then one day I just I don't feel like logging in and facing the same grind with the short amount of time that I have available, so that's the end of it.

Also being perpetually deployed to a semi-active war zone with shitty internet doesn't help.

Getting home after work or school and then getting onto a mmorpg (WoW specifically) slowly turned into another job. This was before it turned into the pile of crap it is now. After the first week I left, it felt really refreshing to not be tide to the game I never went back. Now when I game, I want nothing to do with leadership type stuff because I want to game not another job.

Personally, i split games into 3 categories. Favorites, friends/community and other.

Not much to say about favorites. Even if i take breaks from them here and there. I always come back to play them. It takes alot for one of these games to be completely replaced.Usually a sequel or another game that offers big improvements.

Friends/community games i tend to play until either everyone starts leaving or i get sick of the game. Primary reason for that would be either getting stuck with repetetiv bad gameplay or when i feel like there is nothing more to do.

The "other" game group is the most volatile one. Things change here all the time often due to the next new shiny thing appearing. This is most noticeable with an ever increasing game library while making little progression towards completing anything,

Something that have happend to me, even with games that i love to play. Is that i think, i will play it tomorrow and before i realise a month will have passed without me starting the game.

I'm pretty progress-oriented in my gameplay. I tend to see my interest wane when I've checked all the boxes I go after or if I feel that future progress will be more demanding of my time than I can give.

At the same time, I really don't bounce from game to game.

School and work making me not want or have time to put into games that require resource gathering and such. So sadly as much as i want to play ark i don't want to put the time in. Also because it'd be unfair to ask others to look after my stuff when they have their own shit in game to look after.

Personally, I am pretty resistant to buying the newest flavor of the month. I prefer to play games with a lot of replay value and then rotate between those depending on what games have been updated or have cool mods that change their gameplay in some fundamental way. Good examples being Fallout, Pay Day 2, Warframe, Stellaris, Xcom, etc. Others that are more story driven (Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Witcher 3) I typically play once through to completion and then (if I still really enjoyed it), play again a year later when the story is not so fresh in my mind.

With me, its not just about money, but also time. I need to feel it is worth my time to spend with a videogame. If the game's playerbase is dead in 3 months or the game is generally a shallow experience, there is not much incentive for me to want to keep playing it... or play it at all.

Pretty much this. I'll mostly stick to one game at a time. Playing it until I feel it has been "mastered" or mastering it becomes too much of a chore.

I honestly kinda bounce around somewhat. Some games, I stick with for a good long while, others I play a couple of times then never again. I find myself a lot of times going back to old games I used to play a bunch, either to 'finish' them, or just for a nostalgia trip. Sometimes I just don't want to play games at all. It's just a weird mood based thing for me.

There are a few reasons that it crops up for me:

Lack of progression - I don't feel like I am accomplishing anything. Often this has to do with not having a good goal in the game, but it also can be the game has a choke point that is too painful to get through.

Lack of variety - Treadmill anyone? Same thing over and over, not much change, ties in quickly with lack of progression.

Time Sink - I just don't have the time for longer games these days. I love Civilization, as an example, but I can't spend 20 hours on one game.

What Demon said. And I have less and less available time these days. Poor old Civ 5 only got one complete playthrough from me. Fallout 4 took over a year to complete (and haven't done DLC yet). Now looking at a forlorn Witcher 3 that will finally rise and consume the next year of available game time. <sigh>
