There are some things they don't really explain well at the start. Magnus explained some, here's a few more:

    1) Your potions and oils only need to be crafted ONCE. After that, if you have alcohest in your inventory and you MEDITATE, they will replenish automatically. This is not explained anywhere and is super important. This is for your witcher potions and your oils
    2) You get mutagens from killing monsters. Big monsters have mutagens specifically named after them, but you get generic green, blue, red mutagens from 'regular' monsters as well. You can craft 3 of the generics into better generics and use them for your character builds. The ones with names after them can be used to create dedoctions, which are special potions that do stuff that generally I haven't found much use for, like the werewolf one that lets you run around without using stamina.
    3) Crafters have different skill levels (amateur, master, etc). There are also crafter types, some people only do armour, some do weapons.
    4) When you upgrade your equipment or weapons, dissemble your old gear at a crafter for crafting materials and to get all the runestones you may have put into them back, so you can put it into your new stuff. Weapon runestones I find in the early game to be pretty rare, the equipment ones seem more common.

so I seem to recall in early promotional stuff for the game that there was a way to play as the white haired magic girl? is that still a thing?

I haven't gotten to play as much as I'd like due to building a fence but I do enjoy the storyline of the series, because grimdark. So far the White Orchard area seems pretty similar to areas in the second game but I'm sure it will open up more once I get through some storyline.

Well I think a good part of it is because of the reputation of witchers as general heroes fighting to protect all from evil... practically rock stars in this universe. Add to the fact that witchers are sterile and have unusually long life spans (same as all sorceresses) and it begins to make a bit more sense. It is also regularly mentioned at least once in each game that a witchers stamina makes them all dynamite in the sack. If Geralt was just a regular joe, I don't think he would get nearly as much action. Certainly the sorceresses wouldn't have taken any interest in him (again, long lifespans).

So yeah... its not entirely implausible.

Totally understandable. If you didn't like the first one, don't worry... I didn't really either. The two later games are leagues above the first. The second game brought much better writing/acting/animations and better combat mechanics. The third brought a HUGE environment and even BETTER combat. I honestly can't believe how much game there is to the third installment. I've been hitting this game solid for a week now and I'm not even halfway through. I can say with 100% confidence the game is definitely worth the $60 price tag if you liked games like Dragon Age and KOTOR. Witcher 3 easily has as much content as both of those two games put together, has a more exciting combat system than either, and has a story and setting that treats you like an adult.

I will say this though, the "Witcher Sense" is pretty cheesy. I don't know what else could replace it for what it does but a magic button to hold down and show you all the important things around you just seems like a little too much. Maybe if there was some kind of cooldown timer or something between uses. I don't know.

I can see where your coming from there. If it helps at all, I can confirm that introducing Ciri to the third game has definitely helped push Geralt into interesting new territory. It has brought out father-figure undertones that never surfaced before. On top of that, there is waaaay less random hookups than the first game. The first game was pretty shallow by comparison. The second cut it down to only a few options. The third really centers around Geralt having to choose between Tris or Yen. There is some optional "friends with benefits" action on the side (playa gota play), but it is definitely downplayed compared to the first game.

Botton line... has Geralt become more interesting as a character? Like all witchers, he's still deadpan as hell, but overall, I would say yes. Without giving spoilers there are genuinely some touching scenes in the 3rd game... especially with Ciri.

They need to come out with smell-o-vision. No wait... judging by some of the things you find in this game, that would be a terrible idea. :D

I just love the fact that it is a 1 button toggle and makes it very easy to see which containers hold something. In a lot of RPGs loot on the ground shimmers by default to let you know something is inside, but I always found the effect looked distracting and pretty stupid in a room with a lot of loot in it (even worse when it showed up in cut scenes). The way Witcher 3 does it certainly seems the least intrusive to me. I actually enjoy the "sleuthing" aspects of it as well, especially in some of the side quests where you have to follow tracks, scents, blood, etc. In some of the later quests, you will be glad you have it. Some can be tricky to find.

I don't think you can buy them anywhere. Each time you beat another NPC (only the first time you beat them), you get one random card from a set list. As far as I know, all of the monster deck is on that list. I'm out of Velen now, but I only have about half a dozen monster cards and I've beaten every gwent player up to that point. All I have is a decent Nilf and a strong North Kingdoms deck. My North Kingdom deck is my best one on account of having a shit ton of artillery and Blue Stripes in that one. I can give you pointers on how to build some kickass decks if you need them.

Better yet, here's a link to find all of them:
    http://www.primagames.com/games/witcher-3/tips/where-find-every-gwent-card-witcher-3-wild-hunt

Protip: Make certain you get Foltest's 3rd card in Vizima right after you see Emperor Emyhr for the first time. There is a card player in the courtyard. He is tough to beat (hopefully you got all the cards in White Orchard before you left), but the Foltest card he holds is extremely powerful (an on-demand x2 power bonus for any siege cards you have in play).

In the beginning, not very much. You play her as part of filling in backstory for bits that Geralt wasn't around for. Supposedly, she and Geralt eventually find eachother about 2/3 the way through and then she becomes a sort of "party member" like Yen and Tris, but to what degree, I don't know. All I know is that I've enjoyed every scene she is in. She's a little brassy. I like brassy.
