No, original red box had elf, dwarf, and halflings as classes. Along with fighter, mage (possibly magic-user), thief, and cleric. This was prior to Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 1st edition.
In the original Dungeons & Dragons boxed set, there were only three main classes: the Cleric, the Fighting man, and the Magic-User. The first supplement, Greyhawk, added the Thief as a fourth main class, as well as the Paladin as a fighter subclass. These four fantasy gaming archetypes represent four major tactical roles in play: the Fighter offers direct combat strength and durability; the Thief offers cunning and stealth; the Cleric provides support in both combat and magic; and the Magic-User has a variety of magical powers. In many ways, other classes are thought of as alternatives that refine or combine these functions. Dwarves and Halflings were restricted to the Fighting Man class, and Elves were restricted to the Fighting Man and Magic-User classes; all three races had limited level advancement pulled straight off wiki, because wiki is all knowledgeable (if occasionally suspect)
the first version of DnD I played I think was Advanced with the Zanzer Tem Adventure. characters were on cards.
It looks like their finance guy told them "every game must have a ton of DLC and micropayments everywhere possible". So, caution is advised. Until we see more, don't be surprised if you run into "pay more to unlock this, that or it".
honestly, if they do that I'll still be good with the game in general, I won't be surprised to see that, but if that's the route they take then I'll just play it through like a normal game and call it good. Unless I consider it worthy enough to invest more money into.
Personally, as long as there's decent rate of progress to be had for less than 50€ I won't mind either way. Both have pro's and con's. It's annoying to pay 50€ upfront not knowing what you get and when you really like something you got for 10-15€ it can be annoying to spend three times that money on 10 individual transactions. So in short I still prefer demo & one payment as the best though if it's about difference between more of the good stuff for extra cost or no extra stuff it's a no brainer. Just want to see that they didn't take the wrong route as some companies by charging you 500€ for the "whole experience".
As should be any D&D group in any situation. Seriously. It's a wonder more characters don't develop severe PTSD involving "perfectly normal looking" paving stones and hallways.
Oh yeah... I know this feeling well. "It's a normal looking stone door" "I poke it with my 10 foot pole" "Nothing happens" "I detect Magic" "No magic" "I detect Evil!" "Why would a door be evil?" "I detect EVIL!" "OKay! No, it's not evil" "I search for traps" "You find no traps" etc.
It's not the door that will fuck up your day- it's the horde of arcane, carnivorous, squirrels that I have waiting for you on the other side.
Me: I chisel a small hole in the door, and cast summon Nature's Ally 8 - Dire Shark on the other side. DM: Dire sharks can't survive in dungeons Me: Monsters can't survive underneath dead dire sharks
Resting atop a massive throne of living coral, the god of the sea, Leviathan cracks a heavy eyelid as a minion approaches. "... ," thunders the deity; immortal boredom obvious in even an non-syllabic response. "Great Leviathan, Terror of Depth, Ruler of Tide, Crusher of Shore. I bring news of one who seeks to abuse the gifts given him by false-worship and thoughtless deed. The adherent has called upon the Sea to bring into being a Great Hunter of the Shallows in the dry, air-breathing depths of a rotting dungeon." "... ," Cringing to absorb the severity of the utterance, the subservient speck acknowledges, "At once, Mighty Leviathan. It will be done." Meanwhile: Back in the dungeon the summoner continues to concentrate on the spell. Sweat trickles from creased brow despite the chill filling the power he draws upon. Abruptly, as though surging towards him instead of resisting, the summoning nears completion. The roar of crashing waves fills the air and a grin creeps across the summoner's features, but vanishes as trickling realization seeps into mind far too late. The perfectly harmless door bursts outward as ton upon ton of seawater explodes into the room from the hall beyond. Torches extinguished, the room plunges into darkness as the thrashing water continues to rise. Within moments, it's level threatens to flood the room to within inches of the ceiling then, with a gurgle, stops. Treading water with cheek pressed to dripping stone, the summoner catches his breath. His mind works furiously as he attempts to make sense of what has happened. This wasn't part of the spell. The shark was to appear on the other side of the door, thrash and bite, and perhaps crush anything waiting. At the very least trigger the "obvious" trap that la-... How do you like it compared to 4? I'll be honest, I kinda liked the setup for powers in fourth. 5th feels like a step back for the 'warrior' class
yes, this is perfectly normal, so when you roll a terribly shitty character that you decide you want to kill, because he's shitty, and then the party goes around doing this you yell 'I kick down the door' prepare for immortality of this character, because while the rest of the party drowns in whatever shitstorm you kick open, YOU can't be killed, otherwise the party would spend way to much time going through every single door and room in a dungeon with a fine toothed comb.
....ding.. You have achieved level 2, congratulations! (If you wish to reach level 3, a small 2 dollar fee will be admitted). Do you accept? 30 minutes later... ....ding.. You have achieved level 3, congratulations! (If you wish to reach level 4, a small 2 dollar fee will be admitted). Do you accept? If want to travel into the forgotten woods, a 5 dollar fee will be admitted to unlock this area. Ive heard of a few games that actually function on this type of system, no fucking thanks. I hope this isn't what your referring to.
