I am contemplating running a game using D&D 5e, not something huge and I plan to have a couple "trial" sessions just to see how I handle GMing and let folks get some kinks worked out. I like 5e mainly because it is a little more simplified and it allows for a lot of creative freedom and role-playing. If you are interested, please post and we will figure out a night to do it. It will be during the week and it will be after 9PM EST. Possibly 9-11 or 9-12, just depends.

What am I looking for in players? I am not interested in running with a bunch of folks who are interested in only combat and meta gaming. A round in D&D is 6 seconds, that doesn't mean you sit there for 10 minutes discussing every little detail. Play your character, and do what you think your character would do. Role play, come up with what you want to be and stick with it. That doesn't mean it cannot change, but just keep your ideals bonds and flaws. You do not have to have a massive backstory, if you want one, awesome.

For right now, and if I continue after the trial sessions, I will be running modules. Starting with the Lost Mines of Phandelver. If this really picks up and it is something that works really well I might pick up some other modules.

Characters - PHB and SRD only. I do not have access to any other books, and I would like to keep it to what I know. Again if this really works well, then I will consider picking up other books. I also think having characters that have low stats make things interesting. You do not need all high stats, having a low int when that is not an important stat can lead to some fun interactions and role play opportunities.

Resources - I use D&D Beyond, it is simple and straightforward for creating characters, but it is limited to the content you own on the site. By default you can only create characters using SRD content.

I imagine at first this will be theater of the mind, if need be we will use some kind of VTT system. Not sure yet, again I am far more interested in the role play and interesting stories that can be created vs just niggling over if you are 10 or 15 feet from something. Certainly on more important fights or fights with a bunch of creatures it would make sense to use a VTT.

If you are interested, please post and let me know what days work best. I am probably leaning towards Mondays. The weekend is out, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

I'm good for most Mondays. Monday is office day for me, so on rare occasions I may be late, but it should be fine 95% percent of the time.

Actually any day but Tuesday and Wednesday is fine.

I am in the market for something to do on Mondays, and this fits the bill.

I can even stream it, if that is okay with you.

I am good for Mondays after 9PM.

I have a small intro adventure I am going to run. I would say the first characters you use for this adventure, do not put a lot of time into it. Use this to work out kinks in character creation and basic rules just to refresh everyone. If this goes well, then I would say lets create the long term characters and we will go into the Lost mines of Phandelver.

I would like to get together with folks that want to play this coming Monday October 1st and just go over what everyone's expectations are and talk about what everyone would like to play.

Do we have any more interest in this or is it just Haki and Orc?

I'd be interested if it was earlier, but grandpa bear has a bedtime unfortunately. If you have the PHB on beyond as the DM, you can "share" it with the members of the campaign. Not sure it works the other way with players being able to share their books with the group though.

Unfortunately you have to have the master subscription for beyond to share your content.

Ah, didn't realize that. I just knew my local DM could share everything, so I assumed it was a DM feature. That's probably the only real complaint I have with Beyond. I don't like having to buy a digital copy when I own the physical one, but I get it. But then not allowing a group to share their digital copy like they could with physical books is a bit of a bitch.

Anyway, getting off topic here. Good luck with the campaign. You might want to try a second meeting to see if it's just the MWO Monday conflict causing low turnout.

I will plan to meet again on Thursday night at 9 if that works better for anyone on the fence about joining.

If there are any times that work better for folks, please let me know. I can try to adjust things if we can get more people just depending on schedules.

For those playing, please have your characters ready before Tuesday and if you can send it to me or get me a copy of it that would be great. If you have questions about stuff, just let me know.

For this first group, we are going to do rolled character attributes. Roll 4d6 - 7 times - drop the lowest for each. So you roll 4D6, drop the lowest die. Then roll 7 of those sets, and drop the lowest set. Then you have your 6 attributes.

In case people want to see what we have so far, here is my character:

Walker, Human Ranger who is probably not from Texas
Made a name for himself among common folk by taking down bandits (Human and Orc alike)
Highly distrustful and pessimistic; also liable to be a party pooper

Do you need to purchase anything in D&D beyond in order to create a character? If so, where can I create a character without re-purchasing the books I already own?

It is tough to create one without having the content in dndbeyond. I would use whatever you usually use to make your characters. I brought that up primarily because it is an easy way for people not familiar with the process to create characters.

We could really use a tank and/or a healer.

    Right now we have:
    • Ranger
    • Sorcerer
    • Warlock
    • Monk

Just a reminder. If you want to play, please have your character ready to go before Tuesday night. I am sure I will be around Monday evening if you have questions or on and off this week.

This is going to be a D&D Adventures league 1-4 adventure that is kind of a one off. Probably multiple sessions but a one off in the sense to get everyone up on D&D 5E, used to the rolls and for me to get my legs as a DM. My main focus is encouraging role play and creativity and interesting moments. I think those are the things that make it interesting. There will be times that the answer is no you cant do that, but most of the time I am going to tell you to go ahead and see what happens. Even if it fails, it could make for a great story.

I forgot to post my character. Not sure if my equipment selection is good, but here is what I got:
    https://ddb.ac/characters/5694584/XtF86Z

Balshor Reylan is a true neutral half-elf sorcerer huxster who travels from village to village providing simple services with the aid of his natural magical talents (ie. Mending). He's not a "bad person" and generally tries to avoid trouble, but he's not above swindling people out of money or possessions if he thinks they won't notice/miss it. While his high charisma allows him to make new friends easily, these relationships often prove to be shallow due to the fact that he is rather lazy, selfish, and cowardly. Regardless of what good he does, once a village realizes he's only there to exploit them, he is invariably run out of town. Thus, he has a rather large network of acquaintances (about half of which want to throw him in the stocks), but very few real friends. As a result, he generally tries to keep a low profile.

Due to his nature, he has always avoided difficult or dangerous work. Until recently, he was perfectly happy charging a premium to fix broken farm equipment (Mending) and clearing farmland (Burning Hands). However, a recent tragedy has caused him to question his choices in life. This recent but ill-defined revelation has motivated him to pursue more risky, but potentially more lucrative work.
