I think you need to look at your feats again. Svirfneblin-magic requires you to be a Gnome. https://www.dndbeyond.com/characters/feats/svirfneblin-magic
https://ddb.ac/characters/5720814/qEcp0L interesting character generation, will probably flesh it out later, but good enough for creation startup XD I don't like that they paywall basic feats...
Does this mean that I should not bother with the Variant Human, because I can only choose these for my bonus Feat. EDIT: Apparently, this is exactly as intended...
But it would be the same if you didn't have the books... The grappler feat is from the SRD, there are no other feats in it. Why would they provide something different through D&D Beyond than they do if you just went to the store and bought the books. Yes, you could put your own feats in there, but the assumption is if you don't have the books, you wouldn't have the information. I would only buy the PHB there if you really want to. If you already have a physical copy, and are familiar with making characters there are other ways of making the character online. I told people about dndbeyond because it is very easy for new players.
because they want people to use their system, if there's only 2 feats available to anyone who doesn't put up money, they're making it obvious just how little they care about the people who play the game, only that they want their money. Obviously they want our money, and certainly there are ways around their pay wall, it's simply insulting, from my perspective, to put such a flagrant cash grab in what is otherwise a rather interesting and intuitive program. Needless to say the internet holds all the answers and they will need to come up with a far more effective lure for those of us who're saltier than others when it comes to buying in to the new thing. http://dnd5e.wikia.com/wiki/Feats (at least until such a time as Wizards of the Coast put a Cease and Desist against Wiki, which I wouldn't put past them, tbh )
Either way, we are only using stuff out of the PHB and the SRD. You do not have to use DNDBeyond to create your character, you can use whatever you would like if you already have a PHB.
I don't see it as a cash grab. It's a service they don't have to provide. DnD is not an open liscense game like Pathfinder. There's no way to verify you have a physical book, so of course they're going to charge for the content digitally. Otherwise there are free, editable pdf character sheets that work just as well for physical PHB owners.
You can also just create a character on the Roll 20 campaign. It's what I plan on doing when I make mine. BTW, I'm thinking possible paladin, maybe. EDIT: Oh I see someone else is a paladin also. Maybe we need some more DPS then.... Hrm...
So for Players and classes - Haki - Warlock Orc - Ranger Magnus - Sorcerer Damion - Paladin Trev - Rogue Alexia - ? Tzeentch - Barbarian
actually, seeing as they are both the content creator and the publisher, they really could break the mold on classic book sales and provide digital content with the purchase, like every book publisher really needs to get behind if they want to continue to be able to make a profit on physical copies. It is not going to be too much longer when the majority switches from paper copy to digital on average, and people like us old timers who prefer a hard copy become the minority. Roll 20 is the open source, not Pathfinder. Pathfinder uses the Roll 20 open source license, as does D&D 5.0. The only significant difference is that Wizards of the Coast are the ones who originally made the Roll 20 system open source, and they also publish D&D. I was simply using it to see if it was something I might appreciate. I do not appreciate the part where I have to buy a digital copy of material I presumably have access to, if I'm playing the game at all. All the other content I can see, and sure maybe there's some argument to be made for some of the content in the players handbook too (though it would be a tough sell to me, but I'll not write it completely off) but feats are part and parcel to developing your character (especially something like a fighter) and really, the information is all out there anyway, so they just make themselves look like a tool. *shrug*
DND Beyond is not part of WOTC. They are supporting them, but the platform is owned by Curse. The problem is there are different platforms, and there is no cross compatibility. I would like to see something where if I buy a book, I get the digital content somewhere, like a voucher. The problem is that would probably push up the price of the books. With that said. If this conversation is going to continue about the content and publishers etc, lets take it to another thread. Lets try to keep this one just about the game info and progress.
