The "levels" are split via "gates" that you have to preform a number of "tasks" to unlock the gate. If you're not quick enough the kracken comes after you, which you can hold off by defeating cultists to stave off the timer. Some zones don't have a timer in them. Ship to ship combat is very much like faster than light, except with sailing ships.
