no no.. activision wants to manipulate a players matchmaking so that they will see nice shiny crap that costs real money and then buy that crap. Then use that player to sell the shit they bought to other players.
you know, I know it's entirely improbable, but having patented this technique, they could literally sit on it, and prevent any other developer from ever using it, actively cleansing the gaming industry of one repulsive marketing technique. yeah, I know, keep dreaming, still. I'm almost to the point now where I may just boycott any game that contains any form of micro transaction that the rewards of said transactions are not reasonably obtainable through gameplay. I don't care how great the game is, I want this form of commercial bullshit to end and the only way I can think of to cause that is simply to deny them every dollar I can and when asked why say 'because of this, this is why'.
You're not thinking slimy enough.. I fully expect Activision to put it to great effect with making them lots of money while mind fucking the players. Then when companies see this profit making.. Activision will then sell rights to allow companies to use it, all for the mighty dollar. This way they get a slice of the pie all the time it is bought and used elsewhere.
Starting a boycott won't do anything. Too many "gamers" will buy the product regardless because "gameplay is good-ish." They allow these publishers to get away with shit like this and have done so for years, hence where we are today. I fucking hate humanity.
This is seriously fucked up. I realize a large scale boycott is expecting a bit much, but if you know better, you can't afford to be complacent about this shit. The best thing we can do as individuals is educate our friends and family. Even non-gamers should know about this... ESPECIALLY parents who are buying games for their children. Even if this is only a patent, this is completely unacceptable behavior from any company. As far as I'm concerned, Activision and its affiliates are dead to me. I have no interest in giving them one dime. It's easy if you try. Tyranny is born from apathy. Strive for something better.

Funny that even though their name is Activision Blizzard it is not Blizzard (warcraft, starcraft Blizzard). So there are two Blizzards in gaming.
The one great silver-lining to all this is that indie gaming will be that much more attractive. I do empathize with the fans out there with favorite franchises chained to one of these publishers' wheelhouses. Reminds me of when Fasa Studios (of Mechwarrior and Crimson Skies) got bought by Microsoft. Hate to say it.... it's only going to get worse for teams like Bioware, Blizzard, etc. Unfortunately, big publishers are where great IP's go to die.
Yes, but that was because Fasa Studios was still a good developer then. Microsoft just foot the bill on over-priced marketing and whatnot.
