A song starts playing in the background as you open this letter...

Greetings and salutations. Some of you may remember me, however many of you undoubtely joined after my retirement (10-8-2014) and as such will not. So consider this both my introduction for newer members and a greeting for my old brothers in arms, those of you who still remain that is as I have no doubt that much has changed during my absence.

Throughout 2013-2014 I was a member of-, and lance leader in the svinfylking's 3.1.2 unit, always having a blast turning enemy mechs into scrap metal while fighting at your side. In time I unfortunately had to leave MWO behind, but rest assured that I never forgot about you magnificent bastards. ;) I still remember the one Quarterly Quad Competition tournament I had the pleasure of entering alongside darktelefax, ironfist and manco. Never had I been part of a community where I felt more at home, it was a blast from start to finish. Circumstances may have forced me to quit the game in time, but I have always looked back with fondness on my time spent here. We've laughed together, celebrated together, and took off our hats in respect of those who had to abandon MWO because of real life obligations or other issues.

In time however, my ever worsening connection issues continued to wear me down until I had to make the decision to put down MWO before I became a burden on the the rest of you and drove myself bonkers in the process. Every time it happened I left you guys one man down while I was forced to wait for the next 10-20 minutes, before flipping the proverbial coin that would decide if I had to sit out the next match as well.

Then about 2 years ago (ironically around the time I was first considering my return to MWO) my old PC slowly started dying on me, my MMO's and MOBA's were the first to go, then my offline games one by one until I could only run stuff from the early 90's like baldur's gate. Aaaaaand then the blue screens and crashes due to overheating started to become more frequent to the point of my PC being reduced to what was essentially an $800 brick that could barely play clips on youtube on it's better days.

But now that I finally have my affairs in order and acquired a new PC (quite a little beast at that; MSI Trident Desktop) as well as a new router, a new ISP and a much faster and more stable connection (even though back in the day MWO was the only game I had any connection issues with) there's nothing left to keep me from coming back and once again force feeding LBX shells to our enemies while proudly flying the skjaldborg flag as I did in the good old days. Much like a phoenix, I will rise from the ashes and start the carnage anew.

It will be a few days until I can jump back into the war proper, as I have to look into all that's changed and probably rework a lot if not all of my mechs before they're combat ready again. Just know that once I'm done with the mandatory spit 'n shine I will be dusting off my many war machines with intent to use them with extreme prejudice. :viking:

    holy shit. welcome back! :toast:

I recommend checking the FAQ for all the major updates that you probably missed:
    http://www.theskjaldborg.com/index.php?forums/frequently-asked-questions.273/

Currently, Solomance and 8ball are managing the MWO group so they would be the ones to direct MWO questions to. I can tell you that they are still having scheduled meetings monday nights at 8pm as far as I know. There has been talk about a planned second day each week, but nothing set in stone yet.

Besides MWO, we are dabbling in quite a few things these days to keep ourselves busy while we wait for Star Citizen and Mechwarrior 5 to drop:
    http://www.theskjaldborg.com/index.php?threads/recommended-game-list.12013/

We also abandoned Teamspeak in favor of Discord (since that's what most people use these days and its easier to connect with phone apps). I will send you an invite in a PM.

Hrm, we should probably do due diligence, and have you re-apply, unless people feel otherwise.

But besides that, welcome back to the command couch!

Alright so I've been tinkering with my builds the last few days to account for changes in heat/damage balancing (on paper anyway, I don't want to spend my remaining dough before I'm sure that I'm making the right alterations), I'll just share what I've come up with so far here. If anyone has any feedback or would like to suggest alternate builds feel free to let me know.

    [Assault Class]
    Atlas D-DC (Brawler)
    Atlas D-DC v2 (Tournament/1v1 Build)
    Atlas D (Brawler)
    Atlas K (Medium Range)
    Atlas KR (Medium Range)

    [Heavy Class]
    Catapult K2 (Brawler)
    Catapult A1 (Brawler)
    Catapult C1 (Long Range)
    Cataphract 3D (Brawler)
    Ilya Muromets (Medium Range)

    [Medium Class]

    Cicada X-5 (Scout/Harasser)

They all look viable to me. Only change I'd recommend is upgrading the med las to er's for the range if you can handle the heat. With Darktelefax playing again, perhaps a couple of us could start an hour or two earlier to make it a bit easier for you guys.

Please do tell me more, I'm not quite sure how uac's work in terms of jamming probability (I tend to lean more towards LBX than AC) but I'm always down for more dakka. ;)

I can have a look and see which builds can run them without losing too much uptime, I generally try to keep my heavier mechs just north of 20 sec since they're slower to take cover. So when I do engage the enemy in a slower mech I tend to try and lower the odds of getting a forced shutdown mid-fight. That said, I'll crunch the numbers later today to see on which builds I could implement this change. Thx for the feedback m8. ^^

Keep in mind when we run as a larger group we are lucky if we can manage to field more than one assault mech due to weight restrictions. Just thought you should know before you spend all your credits.

Ah there are new weight restrictions now? So I take it there's no longer a 3/3/3/3 (A/H/M/L) balance? At any rate I'll prioritize my heavies then and put modifying my assault mechs on hold. :)

Btw I managed to find a heat management calculator that I'm sure will come in handy. http://keikun17.github.io/mwo_heat_simulator/

Have them in 2 groups of 2 each. No other weapons. Also the grouping help manage heat. Because holy crap they will go 0 to 100 heat. Also it is more of a Solaris build.

probably good idea to pick out a favorite medium mech too just in case. sometimes tonnage can be that tight if our group is big enough.

also, try out snub-nose PPCs when you can. they have roughly the same range profile as LB10s and fire faster than normal PPCs. you might end up liking them.

Haha don't worry I still have my old Cicada X-5 lying around. Btw I did take a look at the Snub-Nose PPC's on smurfy but they seem to run just as hot as regular ones, have only half the range of the LB10X (more or less equal to a Medium Laser) and have a cooldown equal to regular PPC's. On paper it doesn't really look appealing tbh. (though they don't seem very expensive so I can probably buy a few when I get the ER Medium Lasers)

I've also finished implementing my changes to the mechs I own (save for one that's running an XL285 instead of XL295), I've moved on to skill trees now which seems to be a lot more in-depth than it was back in the day. I'm thinking of going for cooldown, heat reduction and increased ammo capacity for starters, but I'm holding off on spending any points just yet because there's a lot to go through. Plus all my points seem to be general rather than mech specific so I've yet to decide which ones I'll pimp out first and in what way.

This is what I've got to work with btw (all my mechs seem to have a decent amount of historic exp, ranging from 30k to 100+k depending on the mech), any suggestions are welcome. ;)

And last but not least, I've looked into that new solaris thing and I saw they have 1v1 (which is awesome), but on further inspection it seems I can only use trial mechs there atm. What's up with that? Will I need to buy clan mechs or smth? x'D

The HSP, historical skill points show that you have enough to fully skill the mech and only this mech with those points. Any mech you had previously mastered will have these HSP's to allow you to re_master them.
