This is a thread about computer building. Have any questions about building a computer or how sweet your rig is. This is the thread for it. I will try to edit the OP to have links to all the good sites.

I want to build a new computer.. I don't know what processor to get or motherboard.. should I got SSD for my OS or a game drive? Should I wait a few months because a new generation is coming out soon? So many questions...

Only thing I know for sure is I want nVidia graphics cards.

SSD for you OS and whatever you are using/playing. You can have a 2TB SATA drive to store your porn, music and games you download from Steam/Origin.

So, the whole SSD drive thing... the prevailing wisdom is that you can sorta go one of two ways, depending on if you're a rich dick or not.

Get a smaller SSD drive that won't break the bank, put your OS and whatever else you want to boot up really fast on it. Preferably something that you won't be reading/writing to the SSD a lot with. Have a big 1-2 TB HDD that you put all the rest of the stuff on that doesn't need that instant load, games that you don't play every day, music, pictures, video.

Or, if you're a rich dick, buy huge amounts of SSDs, string them all together.

It's still too early yet to be planning parts orders for a game in Sept/November. I'll let you know my plans and how I go about it as the time comes.

I tend to just use Tom's, the Tom's forums, and reviews on Amazon/Newegg. Going to be updating my MB, processor, RAM, and video card. Move my old ones to the wife's computer. We'll see if I need to get a new PSU or not. So basically an entirely new computer...

Whenever I start looking to build a new PC, I ask Ulfar. Nate's knowledge is unparalleled in regards to building nice shiny new rigs.

Just did a quick gander and it looks like a GeForce 560 TI might be the best price/performance bet at the moment, and an i5-2500 (or a bit extra for a K version, which is apparently an overclocking wetdream).

The 560 (non-TI) is only like $20-30 cheaper.

    Thanks I try lol.

You are correct sir. I do highly recommend spending the very little extra money for the Ti and K editions respectively.

The Ti version is the newer architecture with 384 shader cores, while the non Ti version carries 336 shader cores. The GTX560 pretty much performs only marginally better than the previous generation GTX460. Thus IMO making the Ti version the rightful successor.

The i5 2500k has an unlocked core multiplier, while the 2500 doesn't. With that you can over clock the CPU by increasing the multiplier while not having to jack up the Front Side Bus (FSB), this removes any RAM limitations and basically the only thing to limit you is the heat.

The plain 560 is basically just an overclocked 460, looking at the numbers. Same number or cores and pipes and innertubes and all that

It is almost the same. The main difference is a newer GPU core that has been slightly optimized for performance and power efficiency. In most benchmarks the 560 performs 10% better than a 460 over clocked to the same speeds. Then add in the fact that a GTX560 can be overclocked higher than the GTX460, IMO that makes the GTX560 a better card. If you are pinched for cash the GTX 460 is not a bad deal at $150 ( $120 w/ MIR) though.

Note on the 460's is the amount of flavours. You can get 460s in different Memory sizes as well as the 'shoved in a can' (They call it 460 SE, which is cheaper, but you lose some power)
For better epen, you can get the Evga 460 dual SLI on 1 card. Forget the name exactly.

Nice! I couldn't justify the extra cost of the i7 over the i5 since I mostly do gaming and not "productivity" stuff. No aftermarket cooler?

I want to see how much space I can work with before buying an aftermarket cooling system. I should have enough left over wattage to install a water cooling system or extra fans, I probably won't have the room to do both.

I have been trying to figure out if the NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE is an integrated graphics card or not. I may be using integrated wrong but I mean is it a CPU+GPU or a dedicated graphics card? I know it's not exactly great but it will suffice till I can buy an actual one or buy one at the same time depending how much is left over when I finally buy my desktop which should be soon (next few weeks)

Also are all power supplies units the same size? (my computer upgrade & repair class never did mention if they were or not)
