TL;DR: They have a mount called an Ursaphant. I'm no specialist in dead languages, but I think that's a Bear/Elephant. This makes the game a no-brainer for me.

    Kickstarter

A fantasy MMO where your character, the meat-body, ages and dies (something we've been wanting since Peter Molynever-makes-the-game-he-promises fired up Fable for the Xbox) while the soul, the Spark of Life, carries on.

The Sparks appear to be character slots that retain the 'experience' of their previous hosts. While you won't wake up in a new body knowing innately how to forge a longsword, you will have an easier time re-learning the trade and will advance further.

You can raise a family. Even designate a descendant to inherit your soul.

They aim for a skill-based (eg: Mount&Blade) combat system that rewards practice instead of gear score, which is freaking neato in this setting.

An unexpected, slightly terrifying, and pretty cool feature they're planning on is their "always there" AfK system. When you log out, your character stays in game, doing whatever it is you specify. Running a shop (ala EQ1), sleeping, or staring blankly at a fireplace while memories of "that village" haunt them.

I'm in for a decent pledge and am considering a boost if they can deliver more info. This is the kind of MMO I've always wanted. And yeah. I know I've said that before. I meant it then, too.

We've had some rough history with MMO's that promise the world and sometimes fail to deliver, or even get released in the first place. Disappointment is part of the package, but with enough backing almost any project can at least see 'Playable'.

Been keeping an eye on this for a couple of months now. It definitely caught my interest. I can't really think of many multiplayer games that offer that kind of perma death system even if you do well.

What gets me interested (other than the bearlephants, of course) is the "play-for-pay" system they highlight. You don't just earn an income that pays for time. You are rewarded for supporting the storyline. Especially since, ideally, the quest line is tailored to you by a Director-like system of code.

    Potentially.

Sounds like revival a bit but we all know what happened to that dream.

Player character persistence when logged out seems like it would be hugely exploited.

I would personally Hannibal the crap out of logged people with them down a hole in my basement...

kidnap/murder logged people. end up causing a quest to be made with a bounty on your head so hundreds of players are actively searching for you? but you have always been in a ninja outfit so people don't actually know what you look like. some fugitive style stuff or law abiding citizen stuff.

I will probably pledge in the 120 to 150 range mainly because of the extra sparks and thats the most im willing to spend. one extra spark with the 120 dollar but the 150 package comes with 2 and a few more goodies. The extra sparks will give me about 8 to 11 months of play time each so its worth it since it comes with the package, that's if I play the game in the long run though. Going to spend it anyway right, may as well get some cool stuff to start off with.

im only going to do this because of its very close resemblance to revival in a lot of ways and i want to play a game like this so much.

Revival is also on dead stop for a very long time now.

id be willing to go 250 only if people want to get our own town and others want to play together, they can also help by getting villager tokens to upgrade the town.

I love the idea, but I can't warrant backing it, if it turns out to be gold I'll likely play it, just can't make that sacrifice myself right now.
I also don't care for the 'spark of life' pay system, I understand they want to make money, and $30 for most of a year isn't really asking a lot, it's way less than the typical subscription but the potential for griefing takes on a whole new level when it can actually cost -you- real world money. I don't care about the griefers penalty, sure, they might have to buy a spark or two also when they inevitably get caught, but in the meanwhile they might have murdered who knows how many afk PC's operating on AI scripting and now forced to pay real world money because someone else was a douche. I hope they're going to have more caveats on this etc... it's a cool system and a cool idea but I can just see far to much potential for abuse as I read it.

Yeah I'm a little worried about griefers myself.

The time taken each time you die also increases as your reputation/influence goes up.

Most people will be considered unknown from what I see. So they won't have the death toll increase since that starts at baron and above I think. There is a conversion formula on the website. There is also a grace period after dying so you don't loose lots of life.

With that being said.. A king or queen will only get 4 to 5 deaths before they are done. While a unknown can die once a week and will have 9 to 10 months of play time?

They have to pay the servers somehow, they don't run on hopes and dreams you know.

25 dollars gets you the game right now for early bird deal. One spark of life though. So game and about 9 to 11 months of playing time.

I imagine if you (a player) manage to obtain a noble rank of such standing, that you'd have a number of players dedicated towards preventing your death, as well. I can imagine plenty of in game perks they could add to a functional kingdom to make it well worth it, as well as simply economical, how do you make money in this game, well the king has a quest to guard him for 1 hour... with the AI system theoretically you could do that while afk, I mean AI isn't going to be the greatest, but with enough neutrals involved I can imagine it'd be relatively difficult even for an organized group to get through.

So.. permadeath as a mechanic creates the economy for assassin and bodyguard. :D

Dev Blog on Incapacitation. And the Dev Journals as a whole.

They are going to have to throw out a lot more information about the system before people really bite into it on anything but a die-hard level, but it is very intriguing.

I'm only doing this because revival is dead now. And this is its substitute.

With that being said I have the option of being the mayor of a town or baron of a stronghold.

I'll have 625 ip to spend on ip kits to get the things up and going.

The map is also supposed to be the size of Vermont, I think the devs are being a little bias, with it taking around 2 years in game time to walk across the map.

I also get to pick a custom surname so there's that as well.

They currently have a poll going to help pick stretch goals.

some of them are game features while others are in game rewards.

some of these are on the poll while others are not.

Diggin/burying, heirlooms and burns would be my picks. With the permadeath heirlooms is number 1.

Here is my friend code for anyone looking to get into this game.

    37F8D6

referrals for just joining the CoE website gives IP

using my friend code gives me IP which can be used for

IP will be used on land, store fronts, guild hall, and starter packs as they are most beneficial to everyone here wanting to join the game. can also give copies of the game but that will probably require more ip then ill ever see.

    personal game play right now

I am leaning more towards baron then mayor currently.

Most likely going with a harsh climate area as the weather conditions do matter in this game. Weather can be a valuable tool to keep would be conquers out of your area of power. The two areas i'm most looking at is the desert and snowy rock mountains. This also depends if these climates even exist on the map we will be on, but it is supposed to be the size of vermont so it should.

Professions will most likely be miner, masonry, lumberjack, and carpenter.

They have also stated that a child of a baron and up will have a assigned code and that code can be given to a friend which will allow that person to play them as a character. So down the road I can let someone here play as my sons and daughters, which could be interesting.

this is all subject to change as the game can change.

A development journal on land management.

Im just giving the link because of how long it is. Posts are character locked and would take to many to post the entire journal.

goes into detail of what the mayors, barons, counts, dukes, and kings responsibility and how they manage the land.

I'm not really sure I will have the time to commit to this game, but I am definitely glad to see this exist.

I've been saying for years there should be a permadeath MMO.

My idea was an MMO set in feudal japan at the height of the age of the samurai. Players would not just create individual characters, but control an entire "family clan". Each clan would have members that you would control individually. If one of them died, they stayed dead and any possessions they owned would pass to their next of kin in your family. Character progression would be fast compared to most MMOs (and probably skill based), but death would also be severe to make up for it. Part of the game would be creating a large and powerful clan. The ultimate goal could be elevating one of your members to nearly legendary status that the entire playerbase would know. Of course, with that prestige would also be the constant threat of assassination... but that would be part of the fun. PvP and trolling would be controlled by VERY REAL consequences for wholesale murder of another clan member.

But more on topic. This game sounds cool too. :) I will try to keep an eye on it for furtehr developments.
