Wow, it looks like they spent the whole afternoon making that trailer. What, flash cartoons just sliding about, not even changing scale. Epic. Oh well, they did have a parallax effect with the stars at one point I think, when the camera pans to stary sky. From the budget and art style it looks that way. from the link: "Scheduled to arrive in early 2015, the turn-based game is coming to PC, Mac, and iPad. Pricing was not announced, nor were any details about a possible Android version." So yea, it's another micropayment bullshit iPad game that's also available on PC. Not excited. So we get a PC game made with the limitations and cynicism of an iPad production. Boo.
It wasn't the greatest technical feat of artistry, but I honestly didn't find the trailer that offensive... especially for a low budget title ("low budget" should never be a dirty word, remember?) I actually found the story setup to be rather compelling and more original than the typical "space invaders" trope. Are we at that point where anything but the flashiest graphics deserves ridicule? I'm more annoyed by what seems to be a a growing trend of Star Citizen reminding developers that the space genre isn't dead afterall. A good trend I guess, but the motivation here feels pretty two dimensional. One could say pirate themed games got a similar treatment a decade ago. Also... what does this have to do with Civ: BE?
I wouldn't mind if that was a vid for an indie group. That being a video for one of the big companies.. Um? It just sounds a lot like they're either fishing, checking if it gathers any interest with minimal investment OR they're never going to be investing into it as if they were serious. I just think that the marketing budget and things such as the trailer can often be indicative of the amount of resources they're willing to spend. Also I'm highly sceptical of the true intents of business and exec types who are going "let's make space something for iPad".
It's being released "early 2015" so it's already done, they're not just fishing. I would lean more toward the explanation that this is content that was intended for Civ:BE that wasn't ready in time. It is kind of a natural progression. Kinda like the final game mode in Spore.
If you're comparing it to Spore then it means you don't like it either? Nevermind me, I'm a cynic when I'm not overly positive and excited
That's a good point. In a perfect world, I would love to see large developers put more emphasis on smart and efficient game design over large budgets with expensive visuals, but you are probably right in your suspicion.
