I saw this thread over on the MWO forms. I was not happy with the set up I was using and used some of the advice to purchase a new set of controls.

For those with experience in try different controls and have found the best set up, please let the rest of know who are inexperienced with first person shooter / simulators.

    Thanks,
    Greg

I found it very difficult and cumbersome using a joystick for mechwarrior 4. I tried to use an advanced HOTAS for MW LL but again, cumbersome and a bit insensitive. I've now got a £50 razer coming mouse, 7000dpi (very accurate) with 20 buttons. Perfect for MWLL and everything else.

The only time I'd use a joystick is flight sims, for me.

Anyone have any experiences with gamepads? I've not tried the xbox controller yet, but found that very enjoyable for skyrim on the pic (instead of mouse and keyboard, strangely!)

Well, I was actually trying to figure out if I could map all the buttons to a gamepad for MWO... But I haven't decided yet. I'll probably be trying keyboard/mouse, then joystick, then possibly a gamepad.

Unless I find my situation dire enough to purchase a joystick, I will be sticking to my HOMAK controls, thankyouverymuch.

I had the same experience. I've had joysticks ever since star wars x wing alliance forced me to get one, but for non flight sim/space sim games, I usually stick with my keyboard and mouse. Of course they're a logitech gaming keyboard and mouse, so good for this sort of thing. I get more precision out of my mouse than I'll ever get out of any joystick or gamepad, and it's more comfortable and natural.

It really depends on how they handle mouse movement, whether things are "precise", or if you're waiting around for the mech to catch up where you're moving. If it's quick/twitch, a mouse would probably be more accurate, but there's just something immerse about a HOTAS set up that I couldn't resist.

Indeed. I wish I could afford a full simpit setup. Now THAT would be fun.

I would get lost in a simpit. KB/Mouse is good enough for me.

I have an old microsoft sidewinder joystick. If MWO supports it well I'd prefer that, if not mouse/keyboard.

I'm really hoping that the game will not be to much of a twich shooter and allow for the joystick crowd to have an even shot. I personally suck with a game pad, I'm thinking the razer hydra might be worth checking out but I'm suspecting that it is more set for twitch playing and not as good for mwo. Since my old x36 isn't compatible with any recent windows version I've retired it at last and have a steal of a x65 coming from ebay to try out. I had planned on picking up a steel battalion controller but that has been made redundant since the upcoming hawken blows it out of the water for a dual stick setup and the fanboys have made the steel battalion controller prices more than double to over $150 in the past two weeks. I'd really like to try the warthog since I have a feeling it will be about the best out there but I keep missing every decent auction for one, B&N photo has the best new price but its still over $400, also depending on how the artemis turns out I might end up there. I was close to building a sim pit but I can't loose the functionality of a decent office computer and desk so I've had to resort to half using a craigslist desk and half building one to get to about where I want to be.

I'm playing MW4 with an old MS Sidewinder, and mostly get pounded to pieces while still aiming. Sure I could get a decent mouse and go all point-and-click, but... it's just plain wrong, no way around that. Currently thinking of getting the Saitek X52 HOTAS (or something along those lines).

the razer artemis has got my attention, i must admit, that little snazzy screen, mechanical keypad and force feedback joystick, all mech themed...

...a simpit sounds interesting now, a little geeky, but interesting. Wonder how much money i can skim off my wages to pay for it all, currently playing everything on a laptop with 17" screen! immersive......... :unamused:

Will anyone here be considering the Artemis? it's certainly a strong contender due to the force feedback, very rare in joysticks these days.

I highly doubt I would. I have a feeling the cost will be prohibitive. Well, that and I love my keyboard and mouse anyways. :p

I'm already a cemented no on it unless they change the keypad/thumbstick thing to a dedicated throttle and even then I'll only be a maybe because I don't like the aesthetics of the design anyway. I imagine that little thumb slider thing is going to be far too annoying to use over extended play and especially for fine tuning speed.

Dont likethe look of it personally, that Joystick looks like no fun to hold for a long period. No propper grip or mould.

Ill stick with my black widdow and naga.

Of course I find this post after starting a gaming mouse one in PC Builds/Components!

I found the HOTAS a bit cumbersome as well, mostly since the throttle was just too much for me. Bulky in the left hand, while only having 3-5 buttons.

In plan on going with a precise mouse and a gaming pad in my left to maximize buttons and mobility

I am running a mouse+KB combo right now but depending on how the game plays i will be aiming for a saitek X52 but that might have to wait until the end of the year as it is still fairly expensive. I really like to have the dual control setup. But as some have pointed out i am a bit worried that a stick will be to slow when running light and some of the faster mediums as a recon.

Time will tell. But if i get something the X52 seems to be a good mix between a cheap stick and a full on flight rig (might get one of those if i get a really good salary after Uni) as i like to have the torso twist with my feet thing. My better half would not like me to pod the small office that we use as out computer and nerd stuff room.

This may be a very dumb question, but will there be anyway to play this game with an Xbox Controller, and it work alright? I won't mind learning how to use the Keyboard/Mouse combo, but I've always had a controller in my hand.

Well we really don't know if there will be any driver support for controllers yet. At least I haven't seen anything that said there would be.

I have one of those, but I'm not sure I would recommend it actually. The twist potentiometer is of questionable build quality and I've heard of several people who have problems with a twitchy twist after a year or two.

The problems seems to be that it is sensitive to dust, I've cleaned mine a couple of times but it returns to a problematic state after a few weeks. I've been thinking about switching it out, but I've not been able to find a potentiometer which I just can switch it out with.
