My Grandmother passed last night in her sleep. I hate to say finally, but I think she was done living a few months ago (last time I went to visit her, she was just going through the motions.)

Are all "ancestors" sent off in a flaming boat, or is that reserved for special things? What is considered special?

Sorry to hear her passing, but I understand what you are saying. My grandfather was ready to go when he did too (he was definitely "going through the motions"). Even food had lost its flavor to him.

Life certainly does become harder as our bodies start to break down, but I think the continual loss of familiar faces in our lives takes its toll just as much.

Different states have different burial laws. Not sure if cremation in flaming rowboats are allowed where you live.

Sorry to hear about your grandma either way, though.

Well, if you live on the coast (any coast) and you have access to an actual boat (not one you want to burn) that can reach 12 nautical miles from the coast, safely, you would then be in international waters. At which point you'd only have to worry about whether any burning debris floats back into national waters before it sinks. Otherwise however you'd probably have to get a burn permit, and chances are pretty good that human remains might be frowned upon. I'd probably recommend checking with the county, but most likely any flaming arrows and boats would have to be mostly ceremonial, perhaps cremating prior to the ceremony and sending her ashes out on a wicker raft that should burn quickly?

I know how you feel, I've lost 3 of my grandparents rather close together these last few years and it is still heavy on my mind, condolences for what they're worth...

technically I was asking more of a mythical thing, what are the "viking" rules is it reserved only for warriors or what?
