Why is there not a thread for this? We need a thread for this.

As I’m sure many of you have seen, the Doom franchise recently got a new game, and I wanted to take the opportunity to give you my two cents on this game (and how fucking awesome it is).

Doom is another Bethesda/iD release, and I had some high hopes because of that. They also put out Wolfenstein: The New Order- which is easily one of my favorite games to be released in the last ten years. One of the things that makes that game so amazing is that they did such a wonderful job at visually telling a story with the setting. The gameplay is great, but the story and the quality of gameplay is just outstanding.

I am of the opinion that they delivered a product of equal, or even greater, caliber this time around with Doom.

I have not yet finished the game yet, but I am several hours in. First off, let’s just touch on the aesthetics. This is a beautiful game. Whether it’s the weapons, the character models, or the environment, everything just has such an exceptional level of detail to it. I could go into more detail on this point, I’m sure, but I really don’t think that it’s necessary. The game looks great.

The story (so far), is pretty great. I do not want to focus on the plot itself (want to avoid spoilers), but I will talk about the things that I think make it great. Much like in The New Order, there are constant narrative elements throughout the levels to help build and maintain immersion. The voice acting is on par and really well-integrated. Some of my favorite little details are holograms with pre-recorded messages that spout of propaganda and information on a loop. All in all, they have done a fantastic job at being intentional in how they go about building the world that you move through. It feels so much more like a world has been constructed, and you have to battle through it, rather than a world being built as an excuse for you to blow shit up.

The gameplay itself is different than I was expecting, but it is a pleasant surprise. While they are done with the same degree of narrative quality, do not go into this game expecting the gameplay style or pacing of Wolfenstein: The New Order. Doom really is a reimagining of the twitch-style shooting that we saw in the 90s and early 2000s. I’m talking Quake and UT. I love it. It is fast, and it is brutal. I love it.

While I loved The New Order, one of my biggest grievances was that, even on Uber difficulty, it really wasn’t that bad. Yea, sure, I occasionally died, but there were really only two or three places that required more than one or two attempts to pass. Doom has stepped the bar up in an awesome way. I am playing on Nightmare right now. It’s the hardest gameplay modifier in the game, and the second hardest overall (the hardest is Nightmare difficulty but with a hardcore modifier- you die and you’re done). Right from the get go, this game kicks your ass. While in the New Order I found myself constantly looking for a challenge, in Doom you rapidly develop the expectation that you will die, and you will die often. That said, the game really does do a great job at curving the uptake of difficulty. That was probably one of the most impressive things to me. In each mission I have found myself challenged, but not to the point where I just can’t see a way to beat it.

All in all, I highly recommend this game with a caveat- do not buy this if you do not want to play a twitch shooter. I love this game. I really do. It’s beautiful, the story and world-building is masterfully done, and the gameplay is an awesome challenge, but all of that will be lost on you in a white-hot explosion of frustration if you go into this game expecting a deliberate or methodical shooter.

I was surprised no one seemed interested as well. Not that I am after Doom III, but I have heard good things about the single player

I couldn't give much of a shit about the multiplayer, but I love this campaign.

I've read and heard lot of positive things about the new DOOM.
The gameplay videos manage to put smile on my face pleasantly often. The chainsaw and gauss cannon are just hilarious to watch in action.
The overall gameplay is fast and brutal and it encourages you to switch weapons on fly and be aggressive.
My only complaint atm is that my comp can't run it.
Oh, well... Brutal Doom is fun too when I need some good ol' demon slaying.

I'll definitely pick this up at some point, but I have a couple of other games on my buy list that come first.

Between Doom III, the multiplayer demo and the conspicuously lame excuse for not providing review copies I'm super relieved it's actually good.

This wasn't nearly as bad as you'd think. I managed it the first try.[IMG]

That said, I tried to progress further on into the game, and the client crashed to desktop...which deleted my save file. Since it's Ultra Nightmare you can only save/quit after a beating a level. Any premature leaving of the game erases the save file. I assume that's to prevent people from killing the process from control panel if death is imminent, but it proves problematic with the crash-to-desktop issue that is not a terribly uncommon occurrence in the game.

It was a minor inconvenience in my Nightmare play through, but if that can't be fixed, I can't say I'm terribly incentivized to try to slog through an Ultra-nightmare campaign. I'd be irate if I had gotten several hours in and that would have happened.

Backups? Like outside the game copy the save and put it in a different location? Would still suck if you made a backup played a few more hours and it crashed before you made another backup. Heck they could probably make it so it does an automatic backup so a crash would only delete the active save file.

Because I read negative reviews at some place. I think Pelit magazine kind of dissed it.

I have been playing a lot of Brutal Doom lately and I was quite hyped about new Doom - not because of marketing or videos but just hoping that it would have the spirit of original ones and maybe some aspects of Brutal Doom.

Almost bought it but that negative review stopped me, it's a big investment after all.

    Excited and interested.

I suppose also all the fuss with Doom multiplayer was a bit of a turn off. Every fucking new game is always a multiplayer and multiplayer sucks.

Shit. I'll have to wait past wedding for the next salary to get it since I got Stellaris instead and a pair of shoes.

I'm loving this game. I love how powerful you feel as the game ramps up and enemies you would see maybe one of at the end of a fight you now see regularly in packs, and the game has trained you and you've gotten better, so you handle these insane, lightning-paced battles with smooth ease. When I fight off a pack of Hell Barons and glory kill the last one I feel like a god.

Brosefs. There is a sequel to Doom 2016 coming out next year called Doom Eternal.
