So here's a new space mmo kickstarter (if you aren't already burned out).

    Highlights:

Dual Universe is an innovative Sci-Fi sandbox MMORPG defined by:

    • One centralized and unique persistent universe shared by everyone at the same time. No instances, no zones, no transitions.
    • Everything in the game is player-made: ships, cities, orbital stations,... with no limit in size. The world is fully editable.
    • Emergent gameplay: economy, trade, territories, politics and warfare are all player-driven. Both PvP and non-PvP will be possible

Note from Chris Roberts on it for endorsement: https://robertsspaceindustries.com/comm-link/transmission/15515-Note-From-The-Chairman

Looks pretty cool, personally not sure I wanna throw down on another right now.

I'm not huge on crafting games, but could be interesting.

I'm not thrilled by having to grind skills, though. Particularly in conjunction with a player-driven economy. I've found that once a good percentage of folks get level-capped, all production tends to go into "endgame" items, which isn't very fun if you aren't "keeping up with the Jonses" - or at all good for long-term playerbase stability.

And if they're going to charge a sub for this ("DAC" sounds pretty much identical to PLEX), there'd damn well better be some good GM support. If griefers can destroy all the stuff you build after you log out (sounds like there will be persistence?), or large groups can restrict access to resources (they are talking about area control), there's going to be fertile ground for abuse.

Tbh, this sounds pretty much like it's a complete clone of EVE, but with a more liberal crafting system.

Any game that is Space Engineers or is better than Space Engineers, I am definitely excited about.

Many have tried, most have failed. Space Engineers is getting better, but it's still not quite there yet. What I like about SE is that you have complete control over modifying the things that Solis doesn't like (specifically the grinding). If you want, there is the potential to turn SE into a "Battlebots" arena game. With a competent GM, it also has the potential of being a genuine roleplaying experience. The basic game is not what appeals to me. Building giant buildings and ships does not appeal to me. What appeals to me in SE (and games like it) is what you can DO with them.

Hopefully one of these days we get one of these games that is stable enough for a solid MP experience. I have hope SE will meet this, but if not maybe something else?

To be honest, it doesn't sound like Dual Universe will allow the same amount of freedom. Also, I'm not a huge fan of subscriptions these days and "player driven economies" does not really get me up in the morning. I much prefer quality over quantity in terms of the universe I am playing in. It's why I like how Star Citizen is doing things as opposed to Eve or Elite: Dangerous.

If Dual Universe turns out to be something amazing, awesome, but the sales pitch they give is not something that really excites me personally. I'm definitely interested in hearing how it progresses, though.

EDIT: but most importantly, if we get a bunch of 'borg members that want to get active in this, I will fully support that effort.

been following the game for a few months now, and when i got the email that their kickstarter went live and you could snag the game for really cheap with the [still available] early bird packages i almost clicked.

    but i didn't

the subscription model without knowing this game will hit critical mass in terms of player base is what's mostly offputting to me. i get needing ongoing income for development, but to sign up for a game that i can't dip in and out of without swiping some plastic this early on isn't something i'm going to do. if a huge community gets behind this game the complex scripting and crafting options will transform it into something that'll probably be pretty freakin sweet. their tech demos with tons of concurrent players in a small space is super-impressive to me as a layperson. i just think games like this have to have a critical mass of players to actually be fun. it's why the repopulation never grabbed me after i kickstarted that one, nobody plays it, lol. thats also why SC did grab me, because 90% NPC population so there will always be stuff to do besides resource grinding.

i'm keeping my eye on it for sure, just not convinced quite yet

Yeah, sounds like they are trying to mirror Eve to me too. Can't say I'm excited about that.

I always thought "very large battles" was a cool idea until it dropped my fps to single digits.

You can bet the Goons will be all over this shit, especially after Chris Roberts flat out denied them their "swarm" in Star Citizen.

I got a random invite from a guy in "New Genesis" yesterday. They are one of the top 10 organizations. Apparently, there is a mad scramble for who can be the biggest organization. Looks like it's going to be one of those games where big orgs dominate. I imagine there are a lot of Goonswarm-types that are favoring this over Star Citzen.

Not saying the game will be bad, but I think it is safest to approach this cautiously and wait for a more fleshed out game.

It was my understanding they would eventually have multiple planets you could visit.

I'm still watching this one with a healthy bit of skepticism. It seems a little too ambitious for such a small budget. We will have to see.
