So I don't live in the best of neighborhoods. Infact in the past two weeks, there have been 4 days worth of gunfire across the street. I'm probably complaining about nothing per say, (in the grand scheme of things) The first day there were 3 shots and a car driving off. the 2nd day we came home to CSI and a few cars around. the 3rd day (my children were home) about 5 shots rang out, and tonight, about 12-15 shots, (from two different guns?) I don't have camera's and I wish I did pointing to "protect my house" but maybe they would have caught something that could have helped. Just posting this here to maybe ask for help if anybody has any security camera's laying around they aren't using, or knows something we could use.
Wal-mart, and most any sporting goods store will stock "Game" Cameras at a low price.. they are self contained cameras activated by motion and record onto a small flash drive.. it has been quite awhile since i bought any, so i am not sure on the price.... nice thing is since they are designed for use in the forest they are already camo colored and blend in really nice when mounted against the trunk of a tree.
I was checking in on a interior system just in case. The purpose built systems seemed to go around 80-160€ and more for additional cameras but then a simple webcam with basic IR might be a lot cheaper and could be hooked to a PC and have it streaming to online depository, iirc. Domain.com had something like a terabyte or more for ~8$ a year. I don't know how exactly to set it up and what sort of connection it requires but I suppose it would be a cheap way to rig the system to take interval shots if the bandwidth doesn't suffice for uploading an actual stream. Also you can save video locally but I still recommend sending something to some form of secure deposit. I just heard about locally the police searching someone's home without proper reason and they actually kicked in his laptop and broke some stuff and laughed about it "what are you gonna do?". Security cameras come in two primary purposes. The first and most common is to just stick them all over in the most visible places so seeing them will affect people's behavior and decision making. Second is and/or placing them in places they can't be easily spotted from so they can't be taken out.
Welcome to my everyday life. We can hear the gunfire and see the people fighting on our cameras, and occasionally see the tracers coming over the compound. Check out places like Bestbuy and other electronic stores. You can get a complete setup for a few hundred and depending on where you get it, they can install and setup everything for you.
Just remember, real criminals don't give a shit about cameras. They will keep the lesser ones at bay but the more determined ones won't care.
this post was bothering me.. and i decided to go back through some of my older E-mails because i remembered an all in one outdoor security setup that had been listed. i found it. http://www.monoprice.com/product?c_id=110&cp_id=11019&cs_id=1101902&p_id=12304&seq=1&format=2 well its ALMOST an all in one... you need to add in a Hard drive to complete the setup as a recording system.
If anything I'm looking for something to tell me what's going on out there, I'd like to know is it coming my way, or just around, do we need to hit the ground, or can we crack a cold one and watch?
well... for that i would recommend a Dog whos breed includes descriptive terms like Devoted, protective and Guard. they can ignore distant sounds (even if they are somewhat loud) but become very active when they hear sounds inside their territory. I instantly know when i have a possum or fox prowling in my backyard.. and when someone comes into my yard.. i know almost before they do. and few things scare intruders worse than the sound of a large dog growling in the dark.
Watchdog: Dog that watches and alerts Guard Dog: Dog that guards. Small dogs (the yappy ones) make pretty good "Watch Dogs". They are so high strung and ready to attack an ant that they will alert the "Guard Dog" to the situation. This is why junkyards will have a "scrappy" smaller dog/s who can go lots of places, while the 120 pound Rottweiler and the 100 pound German Shepard sleep in the sun. My parents played this game with Jack Russells and Aussie Shepard. The UPS guy couldn't pull onto the farm without the Russells knowing it, and the Aussies opening an eye to remind the driver to not fuck about. Granted with this plan you have two dogs....but dogs do better with a buddy, even if there is 100 pound weight difference PS: own all the dogs you want, just never own more then one jack russell at a time. Trust me.
there is a hyperactive (Near Jack russel level) medium sized dog that can scare the crap outta people... is called the "Boxer" I'll never own another JR or Boxer again... damn dogs survive on 37.9 seconds of sleep per day.. the rest of the time its.. Ball Ball Ball Ball...SQUIRREL!
I have a Caucasian Shepherd to protect my farm. She was the runt of her litter so shes only 160lbs at 2 years old. She is very intelligent and alert most of the time but not very active until she needs to be. The breed is not for everyone though. They are extremely aggressive and protective. You need to be a dominate pack leader or they will not listen to you. They also need to be socialized with people and other animals from a very young age or they will be aggressive toward everyone that's not in their pack. Just do a google image search and you will see what I mean. Ally, my dog, has killed multiple coyotes at once and walked away with nothing more than a few scratches. She learned quickly who was part of her pack and who is not. If your not, she wont let you in the house without me saying its ok. After that she will stay near the younger members of her pack/family until the outsider has left. She is about 1 1/2 years old in this photo:
