    Lancers...

Some call them saviors, guardians, and heroes.

Others call them devils, monsters, and madmen.

They are no mere Mechwarriors. They are the evolution of Mechwarriors. They are the product of mankind's dreams and nightmares; a union of flesh, bone, and metal made into something greater... something wonderful... something terrible.

Even as a newly inducted member of the Lancer Guild, you will command immense power and respect. You will command the armies of interstellar corporations and planetary governments.

Will you build something greater? Will you watch it burn? Perhaps somewhere in-between? The decision is yours to make.

But always remember the Rule of Three, our core tenants of the Guild:

    • First, the Guild.
    • Order before chaos.
    • Quarter to kin.
The Guild is always watching and judging you each according to your merits and transgressions.

Seek your destiny, but measure your actions carefully.

    Character Creation:
Please keep this thread free of clutter.

If you have questions, check the helpful links below, PM me, or post questions in our campaign discussion threads.

Post the following in ONE post below (you may update later as needed):
This is used to quickly identify your units from your competition/allies. Examples and guidelines may be found here.

Your Lancer will be your primary combat character. Their Callsign also doubles as your "team designation" for any additional units you own (including your Handler). A Lancer's mission designation is "<Callsign>-Actual" (although informally they may use just their Callsign). Real names for Lancers are optional (they can be a mysterious lot sometimes).
A short bio for your Lancer. Try to limit it to 3-4 paragraphs.
List and name your starting equipment. Please note that certain limitations apply. This is determined ONE of two ways:

Starting Equipment Limitations for NEW Players:
    • Starting funds are 5 million C-bills.
    • All starting mechs must be canon designs 75 tons or less and limited to "Advanced" equipment or less (ie. not Experimental or Unofficial).
    • You cannot add advanced equipment on a unit until you have "unlocked" it on the tech tree found here.
    • Clan tech must be gained through Reputation.
Starting Equipment Limitations for Players with IMPORTED assets:
    • Old characters will NOT be imported.
    • All previously owned assets from previous campaigns may be imported.
    • Previous assets can be found here (requires loading MekHQ).
    • If you are importing owned assets that are over 75 tons, their weight MUST be lowered to 75t and their loadout can be adjusted for free. This initial "free" loadout change is TECH LOCKED (ie. you may change your loadouts using only equipment from their Base Tech... IS in this case).
    • If they would prefer, players may sell their previous assets for the "used value" to purchase new starting units. All "New Player" tech limitations still apply.
    • Clan tech must be gained through Reputation.

This is your primary support character. Remember that they do not have their own Callsign as they work in support of your Lancer. For Handlers, their mission designation will always be <Lancer's Callsign>-1.
A short bio for your Handler. Try to limit it to 3-4 paragraphs.
This is the NAME of your Dropship, not its class. Although some may personally accompany Lancers on missions, most Handlers assist from low orbit as commanders of their Dropships while keeping a watchful eye below. Your Dropship serves as your mobile HQ and staging area. Everyone starts with a standard issue small dropship with a 4 slot and 300 ton unit capacity. This may be expanded up to 8 slots and 800 tons. Upgrading to larger Dropships and storage mechanics will be explained later (there will be three different ship sizes each with their own upgrades).

Assignment of Skills & Abilities for your Lancer and Handler can be found here.

Click here to register on the website and join the campaign. It's free and required to track your character stats and make skill rolls.
Note: Your user name can be anything, but please make your "displayed name" for the campaign the same as the forums here (makes it easier for me to track everyone).

Private message the GM with all of the above info included in addition to an email that will be used to give you access to a private Google Docs folder that will store all of your most important information on your character and assets.

NOTE: CHARACTER IS NOT VALID UNTIL STEPS 1 THROUGH 6 ARE COMPLETE! NO EXCEPTIONS!

You may publicly declare a corporate sponsor to gain an immediate bonus 100 Reputation with said sponsor (Reputation is used for unlocking new tech). Certain rules apply:
    • Your Reputation cannot fall below 100 with your sponsor.
    • You may only have one sponsor at a time.
    • You may revoke your sponsorship after 30 days, but you will immediately lose the 100 Rep bonus.
    • Note: there are a few *potential* drawback to declaring a sponsor:
      • You cannot take hostile actions against your sponsor.
      • Other players will immediate know who you nominally work for. This could have consequences in PvP.
You may provide character art for your Lancer & Handler or this will be provided by the GM. Please limit submissions to 500x500 pixels in .gif format to save me storage space.

The day was cold, it was snowing. His home was on fire, the screams of his family still resonated in his ears. Kneeling in the snow, on that cold, dreary day, Canrad Torbis did not feel the cold, nor the snow falling on his face. He only felt rage.

Blood splashed across his face. The struggling body under him stopped moving. A grimace was the only facial expression. The blood drips from the ax blade. The anger faded, only to be replaced by a deep sorrow. A promise is made that day, one never to be broken.

New life, finally, and outlet. Channeling of the anger, the sorrow, the grief. A vow to never allow any other family to suffer the same fate as his own. Moving out from the 'mech bay, his new Axman ready to heed his every command. A smile graces his lips.

    Bio:

Growing up, Ember never had an easy time of it. Instead of playing dolls with her classmates, she'd be up to her elbows in the guts of an Agromech, or a combine tractor, or taking apart some engine or another. Because of this, she was almost always the odd one out, at least until she could fix something.

Her first boyfriend introduced her to the joys of flying, among other things. He was also the first person she watched die. He wasn't the last. Raiders showed up and started killing people for sport, not just for money. Ember threw herself into the resistance effort, plying either her technical expertise, or flying skills to good use. To make the Raiders pay in any way she could...

Then the Lancer came. He was quiet, but always had an intense expression on his face. Rarely smiled, but when he did, he came alive. He didn't speak of his past, but Ember knew he had experienced something horrible. Her only mission once he showed up was to ferry him around to any spot he asked. Within a few weeks, the Raiders were on the run, with many of their number dead. She asked to join him, he allowed her.

Bio: Darien may as well have been a child when Nysharielle, the eternal mistress, called to him. By her hand his homeworld was ravaged and laid to waste. Seeking her elect, she culled a harvest of souls tens of thousands at a time. Many were tested; few survived. Still fewer came to know her will, but that was to be expected. The maiden of the void is many things, but she has never been known to be tolerant.

From beyond the maelstrom of delirium and madness that seized him she outstretched an emerald arm and drew him into the safe harbors of her star-hewn cloak. He had been called. The uninitiated of the humanitarian fleet that arrived soon thereafter named him an orphan. He couldn't begrudge them for that; they knew no better. Like many, they were ignorant to the blissful communion of the eternal mistress.

An orphan became a conscript, and, in time, a conscript grew into a soldier. For years Nysharielle watched over while her elect grew into a pilot of notoriety. When the time and circumstance turned in his favor, she once again beckoned to him with her emerald arm. "Go forth, my servant," she said, "Go forth and seek out my elect. Take your place as my advocate for as long as you draw breath. Build a kingdom unto me."

Darien seeks to please the eternal mistress with all that he does. He now acts as her harbinger and seeks to reap a harvest of his own. In his dreams he sees the image of a delicate silver script rising from her star-hewn cloak, "The worthy rise again."

    Piloting/Ground Vehicle: Level 3
    Piloting/Mech: Level 4

    Abilities:

Bio: Lynette Jarúnkyn grew up the daughter of the only capable mechanic in their backwater settlement. She spent the majority of her years in the mech bays and repair facilities surrounded by the clamor of tools and repairs. She had always loved and the roar of the massive engines as the Lancermechs and drones came and went. Though it was never explicitly discussed, it always seemed as though Lynette would take her father's place when he finally did retire (if the man actually ever did).

They hardly stood a chance when the bandits came. It was as though they didn't encounter any opposition at all and went about stripping the settlement of nearly anything of value. Lynette had hardly thought of herself as valuable, but it seems that the raiders did not agree.

She doesn't know how long she was with them- it could have been weeks or months. In the end, each day blended with the one before and the next. She called for release. She wished for death. Her silent pleading wasn't unheard; the eternal mistress answered. She sent her judgement riding on the wings of fire and metal. That day the compound sounded as though it was going to collapse into itself- she thought her wish would finally be granted.

She will never forget the look that Advocate Rivers gave her when he came upon her cell. It was as though Nysharielle herself weighed her through his eyes. Stooping over her battered form, he pulled out an autoinjector and offered it to her. "The worthy rise again," he said in a voice that sang with an alluring confidence. It was an invitation, but he offered no further explanation- only a choice. It was in that moment that she felt as though the man before her had been sent to her. She took the autoinjector and jammed it into her leg.

She remembered little from the next few days, but that was to be expected. Advocate Rivers was beside her throughout her communion with Nysharielle. He was her anchor amidst the madness. Through his instruction she found the emerald arm of the eternal mistress, and, when she was finally drawn into the maiden's star-hewn cloak, she knew joy.

Rising from her bed she shed her given name of Lynette and took upon herself the title of Devout. Over the last few years she has grown in the favor of the eternal mistress and has risen to become Reverential. She now personally oversees the servicing of the Advocate's equipment and ensures that they are in the proper condition to fulfill his most sacred of tasks.

    Paladin's Bio:

Thomas Gilliam was born August 7, 3281 to a relativity impoverished family in the deep periphery. He spent the bulk of his youth as a farmer, and never learned much of the outside galaxy. A turning point came into his life on his tenth birthday when his mother gave him a copy of Thomas Mallory's (for whom he had been named) book "Le Morte de Author", and told him that she – and Thomas - were some of the last surviving descendants of a legendary unit of Mechwarriors – The Knights of the Inner Sphere. Thomas became engrossed in tales of knightly valor and chivalry, and turned his attention to learning how he too could become one of these legendary Knights.

After managing to scrap enough money to get off world, Thomas began traveling further into the Inner Sphere, working his way along as a civilian mech pilot. At night, he competed in underground mech duels to build his skills in combat. Finally, he managed to scrape enough winnings together to purchase a true – though small – battlemech, and left the civilian life behind to become a professional warrior.

In his short career, Thomas has managed to secure a reputation as a rather odd fighter for a mercenary. He is a strict adherent of the ancient code of chivalry, and shows a high level of mercy to enemies, as well as concern for innocent bystanders. This does not mean he's always "nice";Thomas is more than happy to execute enemies he considers irredeemably evil, or destroy targets that contribute to such evil.

    Katja's Bio

How Katja and Thomas get along with each is a great mystery. The snarky handler shares little of her lancer's romantic notions of the valor of battle, and is instead focused more on just surviving the next fight to collect a paycheck. Having been born in 3293 to a fairly well-off family, Katja spent the bulk of her childhood passing from one boring year to next, lacking any any real enthusiasm for anything her parents tried to involve her in. Fortunately, exposure to the world of a professional mechanic early in her teens finally allowed her to take an interest in life, and she became quite proficient at repairing practically anything with whatever junk was lying around. A tour of duty in the Dominion left her with some decent combat experience and a fair sized start on the life of a mercenary.

While she and Thomas are frequently at odds with each other, there is little doubt that Katja is the reason he hasn't gotten himself killed in some pro-bono, "for the people" battle. Katja is quite happy to balance the books and pick contracts that satisfy her partner's need for honor through battle, and he in turn, makes sure that the payday she's looking for does, in fact, come.

    Lancer: Leland Casmirre
    Callsign: DIOMEDES

Biography: Leland Casmirre is a former member of the Achaeans, a Lancer strike team of the Raven Alliance's Special Operations Executive's Homeridae Program, a project to develop specialized strike groups of elite Battlemech pilots. The Achaeans were a complementary team to the Trojans (of whom the Lancer known a Penthesilea is the only known survivor). Casmirre mustered out of the Raven Alliance military after the Homeridae program was shuttered following the deaths of the majority of the Trojans. Many of the veterans of the program found their way to Nest, the one place where their formidable talents could find use. Casmirre is joined by his former lead mechanic, and unit S2 officer, who acts as his handler.

Casmirre is a charismatic jokester, who makes friends easily and gets along with others. His fighting style is typified by hit and fade tactics, in which he will snipe with long ranged, rapid fire ballistics, then close rapidly using terrain for cover to strike with close ranged and physical weapons, before quickly retreating again. He values the safety of his 'mech greatly, and will be cautious to keep it from being too badly damaged, especially as it is expensive to maintain.

Casmirre pilots a heavily modified, ancient King Crab that he discovered covered in jungle growth, amidst the remains of a centuries old battlefield, a remnant of the first Clan Invasion of the Inner Sphere. When he originally found it, the KGC-010 bore a green and blue camo scheme, and had evidently been abandoned by its pilot. Casmirre and his lead tech have drastically reduced the King Crab's tonnage and completely reconfigured its loadout.

I grew up listening to stories of my great-great-grandfather, a BattleMech pilot. From the cockpit from a ‘mech he lived a life spanning the Clan Invasions on to the Fed-Com Civil War and even the Jihad. I was enthralled by my grandmother’s stories and looked up to my ancestors, who always persevered despite sacrifice and loss. Even though my mother warned me not to take the stories too seriously, she never outright denied what they did. And so I dreamed of following in their footsteps: piloting a ‘mech of my own across the Inner Sphere and beyond. Of course, I kept those thoughts to myself as I chose to lead a more peaceful, mundane life.

My choice was made for me in a bed of flames. My memories of that day are still hazy. Voice hoarse. Feet sore. Skin blistering.

The slow rumbling of massive footsteps. The crackle of PPCs. The thud of autocannons shells.

I first woke to silence and ashes...

    Handler: Radomir Poborsky
I first met Mr. Poborsky on that day, when he took me in and nursed me back to health. As I recovered, he was happy to show me around. He was, in his words, “a mechanic by trade and a tinkerer by choice” and took immense pride in the various machines and trinkets he maintained around his home and shop. Not to mention the archaic Phoenix Hawk he kept out back.

In the years that followed, I trained under Mr. Poborsky in the ways of war. He was a veteran of decades of battle and ultimately couldn’t escape it even when he retired (so he says). When I wasn’t piloting the old Phoenix Hawk, I was still driving him around to his customers. When I wasn’t at the firing range, I would practice navigating my way through the wilderness. He even taught me about diplomacy and socializing; as he says, “battles are not restricted to the battlefields, words can be as potent as any weapon.”

It was through Mr. Poborsky, once he deemed me ready, that he began to act as my liaison for small jobs in the area. Scouting. Convoy escorts. Small-time bounty hunting. And throughout all of it, he would faithfully ensure that both me and my equipment were at their best. After all, one never knows what opportunities will be waiting around the next corner.

Of course, at the time. I had no idea that Mr. Poborsky had bigger plans in mind. At least, not until he introduced me to the Lancer Guild...

Long hath the name of the serpent Magnus been spoke of with ill intent. Long has the seed of the sons of the father dreamed of crushing the line of the Great Traitor. And thus now does it come down to this Son, at this Time, to fulfill this Destiny. For long will Otäck wander, searching world after world, seeking the Spawn. Seeking Eradication. A grand Clensing fire must sweep over the Inner Sphere to right the wrongs visited upon the hallowed Ancestor and the glorious Skjaldborg of ancient time.

Every advantage must be sought. Every sacrifice must be paid. The pain of the neural interface is insignificant to the potential rewards that await when the glorious task is finished and the Forefathers smile upon his success. Bio: They say patience is a virtue and some other handlers might think Kassius is a saint for putting up with a Lancer like Chrome. But where they see a wild beast, he sees a destructive force that he can easily direct in whatever direction he pleases. A simple nudge in one direction or another through the gentle mention of Chrome's particular psychosis and off he goes on a tear, leaving money behind in Kassius' bank account. The REAL trick is ensuring Chrome stays alive long enough for it all to be worth the hassle.

It's not known exactly how the bond between the two started up, but Kassius has been the first and only handler for Chrome since he came onto the scene in the outer reaches of the Raven Alliance spouting his tales of 'Spawn' and 'Cleansing'. His extensive contacts within Alliance Industries Ltd. allowed the unknown Chrome to gain access to the highly costly and dangerous Enhanced Imagining implantation. Though the mysteriously large slush of funds that the Lancer had certainly smoothed the path.

    Strahl "Lindwurm" Bernhardt
    Age 26
    Lancer Bio
Strahl Bernhardt was born the second son to a proud middle class couple on Trondheim. Growing up deep in the territory of the Rasalhague Dominion afforded him an easy and peaceful childhood. Following a group of his closest friends, he joined up with the planetary defense force to pull in some easy money. However, when a natural proficiency at mech gunnery became evident during training, he was given an old Rifleman and assigned to the Anti-Air brigade. Two years later he was shipped off world to join the regular armed forces.

Assigned to the command of one General Minauw, he was hauled along for 2 tours of the border, though in this case the “border” seemed to be no less than 3 whole jumps away from any world in actual contention. Unusual, yes, but Strahl wasn't going to complain about the increased pay grade. While he might not have spent his time risking tooth and limb against tides of well armed clan mechs, he was more than able to hone his skill and reflexes clearing out small but vicious pirate groups utilizing unconventional tactics and ambush techniques. He had even managed to get the killing blow on an old assault class Atlas one baron had scrounged up from somewhere. But no matter where they were deployed or who they were fighting it always seemed to be in their favor, as if avoiding heavy conflict.

During one late shift, tasked with sorting operational reports, he discovered something unusual. Documents simply titled “finances” had accidentally been added to the pile. Flipping through them to see where they belonged he discovered that they detailed the General's less than legal activities. Excess budget squirreled away into banks on periphery worlds, falsified combat reports detailing valiant battles, and core world contacts and blackmail intended to fuel a political campaign. He had stumbled across evidence of governmental corruption and treason. Unsure how to exactly go about handling this sensitive information, he resolved to find someway to get it to the authorities as soon as possible. Sadly, when important things go missing people tend to notice. The files were tracked by those who should've handled them to Strahl's night watch, and everyone on duty that night was consequently slammed under a pile of false charges. By the next day he found himself on a prison transport bound for a trial, or so he assumed. He soon learned they were foregoing trial in favor of a direct course for a labor world. Rallying his fellow inmates, military or otherwise, under a collective cry of “fuck that” he incited a riot and seized control of the ship. Now under new management, the good ship GTFO carved a straight path away from Dominion space towards the periphery where it finally exhausted its fuel above a “sketchy” trade world.

For the next year of his life Strahl found himself going nowhere and fast. He had always been an honest kid and looking for an honest job wasn't easy in this sector of space. After they had made landfall he had initially gotten plenty of offers. Some by his comrades to go back on a fool's errand and seek revenge on Minauw. The others came from pirates and raiders who heard about him and were in need of a good mech pilot. Turns out when you do something like overthrow a prison ship regardless of the reason it earns you a reputation with a certain crowd. Same reputation makes it all but impossible to get a normal job. Odd work here and there was just barely enough to keep him off the street. He was getting desperate enough to start reconsidering what those pirates where offering. To think that he could get even one person to offer him a mech cockpit without the caveat that he'd be knocking over farmsteads for money, he'd jump at the opportunity and kiss them square on the lips. So when a Kuritan women came up to him and asked “Lancer, you still know how to pilot a mech?”, he followed her right out of the bar sporting that black eye like a badge of honor.

Originally hailing from venerable Kagoshima, Alice Naamah is something of a minor international incident. Born into a militaristic political family, the concepts of honor and loyalty especially to her nation and subordinates had been instilled into Alice since a young age. As soon as she was old enough, she was pushed through military academy and given command over a company task force. Despite several successful missions, her military career was destined to come to an ugly end. Tasked with eliminating rogue clan elements near neighboring USF territory she set out with the ultimate goal of bettering relations between the Kingdom and the Federation. However, upon arrival her battalion was met with an overwhelming force of drones and customized mechs. Whatever the reason for their evidently amazing funding, it completely contradicted the intelligence reports received from the USF. For lack of suitable force and denied reinforcements upon request, Alice ordered her forces to pack up and head home. This should have simply resulted in a review of the new data and a redeployment of a better suited force. Unfortunately the clan forces were not polite enough to sit still long enough for that and struck out at two worlds. This resulted in minor political backlash from the Confederation towards the Draconis Kingdom for not having dealt with the intruding forces in their initial deployment. Desperate for a means to salvage the relations with their immediate neighbor, politicians found an easy out in throwing Alice under the bus. Now instead of performing a strategic withdrawal to preserve expensive hardware in the face impossible odds, Alice was “the inept and cowardly commander who mismanaged an entire battalion resulting in damage to two worlds”. Rather than return home and face shame and imprisonment for false accusations, she disabled her dropship's transponders and disappeared into the void of space.

Around a year later she re-emerged in Free World Confederacy/Marian border, Operating under the banner of “Grim Vipers” she resorted to piracy and raiding far away from Draconis space. In this way she aimed to provide for those who had stuck with her. At this time the first and foremost important thing in her life was her responsibility for the well being of her loyal mechwarriors. To avoid public eye the Grim Vipers preyed on battlefield remains as well as units in retreat that were likely to get chalked up to an enemy statistic if they went missing. In spite of her attempts to remain below the radar her operation grew and the Grim Vipers became well established in the warring region. Scouting attempts and probes into pirating groups from both major factions gleamed little information on her aside from her nationality and gender, earning her the nickname “that damn snake witch”. After dealing for a while with black market elements of Luthien Exports, she was made an under the table deal to come work for them. LE was new to the region at the time and looking for a way to open trade with the morally grey elements in the area. For them, a pirate with strong ties to these potential customers who was also a native Kuritan was an opportunity they couldn't afford to pass up. While for Alice, the opportunity to work alongside her kinsmen again and begin distancing herself from piracy was very much the same. Leaving her command of the Grim Vipers, she accepted a position as a regional logistics supervisor responsible for “surplus military distribution”.

Unfortunately for Alice, a few years later a corporate investigator made an unscheduled stop in the sector and recognized her face. Within a week an ambush was set to see her captured or dead. Thankfully, a number of well payed informants meant that she would survive the endeavor. Taking the time to liquidize her assets, she made her escape with mere hours to spare. While her flight from the facility did not go unnoticed by security forces, the escape was ultimately successful and Alice left the LE spaceport in the dust aboard a shiny new 300 ton dropship. While LE would probably cover up that she had ever been working for them without a corpse to present, she realized she couldn't return to the Grim Vipers and put them at risk due to her known affiliation with them. So once again she set out from the region and was almost immediately beset with a malaise worse than the wrath of a corporation, boredom. Now wanting to return to a life of managing her own mechwarriors, she found the perfect opportunity with the added benefit of complete anonymity in working as a handler for the 'Lancers guild under a new alias. All she needed now was a capable mech pilot that wasn't just a two bit raider, hopefully someone who she could inspire loyalty in and with just a little bit of military training. Perhaps some of her old pirate contacts would be able to find someone who fits the bill...

Details on Rémy's past are sketchy at best. He was born on the world Great Gorge in the Malagrotta Cooperative region, and later attended the Filtvelt Academy before serving briefly with the Second Filtvelt Citizen's Militia before allegedly becoming disatisfied with the "parade ground" nature of that unit, and instead appearing to accept a position at the Quickscell Company on Broken Wheel.

Employment with Quickscell seems to have been brief if it ever occurred, as soon after Rémy's departure from the Second he appears to have soon been involved in some variety of contracted mercenary work in the periphery regions of the Filtvelt Coalition, Malagrotta Cooperative, and Fronc Reaches, though he refuses to discuss many specifics citing "employer confidentiality". Some rumors have placed him as a supplemental hire acting as support to the Thumpers and various other local militias, or taking up with pirate bands like the Blades of Death, Border Lords, or even the remnants of Dedrickson's Devils (though this seems highly unlikely given their reputation) either as an active bandit or an undercover operative for the Colonial Marshals or another militia or law enforcement group. A more probable explanation is that he accepted privateer work in one of the Outback periphery states - somewhat tellingly, his livery appears to resemble a modified (or possibly defaced) unit crest of the Malagrotta Periphery March Militia.

If reticent to discuss many details of his past, Rémy appears more even-tempered and affable than one would expect from a rumored periphery outlaw; he is generous to his friends but savage on the occasions when he is roused to anger. He pilots a Kyudo medium-class battlemech design similar to the line which resumed production at Irian Technologies a few decades hence, though its patchworked armor marks it as likely being salvaged from a much earlier conflict. As a pilot, Rémy is unfazed by varied and even extreme weather and climactic conditions, and in combat demonstrates above-average proficiency with the use of missile systems - though it's unclear if this is purely pilot skill or just uncanny luck. The cockpit of his 'mech is littered with a collection "good luck" charms and trinkets from a variety of systems, which he sometimes carries on his person as well.

    Handler: Dave Guzman

    Handler_portrait.jpg

Originally hailing from Portland in the Fronc Reaches, David Guzman served briefly as an aerotech pilot in the First Fronc Cuirassiers before accepting a position within the Colonial Marshals where he served with distinction for almost two decades, patrolling the periphery regions against pirate incursions with minimal logistical support, supporting local militias in dealing with both outlaw threats and tensions with the neighboring Capellan Confederation and the Magistracy of Canopus, and even lecturing as an adjunct professor briefly at the Marshalry Academy while recuperating from an injury received in the line of duty.

David resigned from service with the Marshals in the aftermath of a misconduct investigation against his partner following a tragic friendly-fire incident with local militia units while attempting to apprehend a ring of human traffickers on Herotitus II. No evidence of corruption or miconduct was ever found against Guzman himself, but his staunch refusal to offer testimony against his brother officers nearly earned him incarceration for contempt of court and led to his being placed on indefinite suspension. To this day he bitterly refuses to discuss the incident or trial with even family or close associates, though he is otherwise gregarious and open in discussing past operations.

David makes friends easily within the mercenary and particularly law enforcement communities he has encountered in his travels, and maintains an extensive network of contacts from his days in the Marshals as well.

Born on Kendall, Derek was a troublesome child. Raised by farmers, he developed a great work ethic but never really cared for the job, seeking to cut corners at every opportunity so he could disapear into the fields to escape further work. His parents hoped that forcing him into military service would do him some good. If anything it made it worse, exposing him to the richness of the worlds around him and granting him a network of friends to gamble his life away with. Upon retiring, he refused to go back to life on the farm, instead pursuing more interesting work racing or operating mechs when he could get his hands on them, never settling long in one place lest unhappy clients/losers came after him.

Throughout his post military stint, he has enjoyed his life as a Racer/gambler never afraid to put his name on the line for glory or a cheap thrill. Operates on the principal of dont ask, dont tell with his jobs, getting in him in hot water on several occasions as he smuggles goods or provided escort/extraction to criminal agents in action. If not for his tendancy to do the jobs the authorities cant/wont or his handlers talents at keeping him out of trouble, he would be locked away.

A ghost on the grape vine, always watching out for jobs and skilled pilots. Skirting on the edge of the law, she is always looking to make a profit at any expense. Her reputation has been built on doing jobs in the grey area. Private jobs that make convenient things happen for people who's hands would otherwise be tied.

She came across Derek in a backwater gambling dive bragging about being able to run blockades without scratching his paint. Testing him, she sent him with an empty package loaded with sand. When he arrived at the location she paid him and attempted to show him the cargo. He simply turned and said "You paid me to bring whatever that was here. Honestly i dont care if you wanted to ship a royal treasure or an empty box. Im in it for the money and the challenge. Whatever is in that box is your problem."

Shortly after, she picked up Derek as a full time smuggling agent and slowly built both of their reputations as a team that gets things done without asking questions so long as the money matched the risks.
