This is the "pre-release" of MagnusPack 4.0. MagnusPack 4.0 will feature mostly cosmetic changes to some pre-existing units and more maps, but this 3.9 build has all the improved game mechanics that some of you have been waiting for. Some specific changes:

-"Fatigue" is ON: directly related by Pilot Skill; as the fight wears on, pilots will begin to become exhausted (higher pilot skill helps to reduce the effect)
-"Fumble" is ON: even an elite pilot will occasionally make a mistake; a roll of 2 is ALWAYS considered an automatic failed roll regardless of skill level
-"Self Destruct" is ON: boom (OPFOR, DO NOT abuse this...)
-"Woods Cover" is OFF*: after substantial testing, I agree this needs to be off (it totally negates all damage from SRMs, LB-10 cluster rounds, and infantry)
-"Indirect Fire always possible" is ON: due to complications of the spotting mechanic, this was turned on to hopefully simplify things (someone still needs LOS)
-"Unjam Ultra Autocannons" is ON: why create a rapid fire weapon that jams relatively easily and cannot be unjammed in the field? This makes UACs MUCH more viable.
-"Ultra Autocannon To-hit roll twice in Ultra mode" is ON: roll to see if you hit for each shot instead of using the SRM-2 table (much better)
-"Clubs (Hatchets/Swords/etc) now use the punch table" is ON: clubs are no longer totally broken (in a bad way); now 1/6 chance for headshot = win
-"Manual Shutdown/Startup" is ON: because any opportunity to hear Betty in your head is a good thing :)
-New and improved "reseen" image of the Ostsol and included OTL-5D (IS) model (an awesome 60 ton sniper similar to the Crab)
-New 4-series Stinger designs; a selection of 20 ton economically-minded (read: cannon-fodder) mechs for pilots "unfortunately" dispossed.
-New "elite" infantry (Roughnecks/Battletoads/Road Warriors/etc.) with equipment ideal for anti-mech warfare (prepare yourselves accordingly) :)
-Many new "Advanced IS" designs of popular mechs: Phoenix Hawk, Shadow Hawk, Wolverine, Thunderbolt, Awesome, Zeus, etc.

*in regards to Woods Cover; it should be noted that woods still provides some protection in the form of a targeting penalty (similar to shooting a target through smoke)

The overall result of the changes has made min/maxing more difficult (or at least less powerful), heavier autocannons are now viable alternatives to the "medium laser boat" option, lighter autocannons are now viable alternatives to LRMs, Hatchets are awesome (but not overpowered) again.

I really need to figure out how the frack to use MegaMek so I can play with you guys. Just browsing through it I can see it'll be a lot of fun, but as it sits, I have no idea what I'm doing in it beyond customizing mechs I don't know how to use.

If you are going to be around tomorrow night you are welcome to join our mission drop and watch it in action. Go ahead and download the MagPack and also I or Dihm will try to get you set up on Hamachi so you can link up. We're dropping around 8:30 EST so if you can be around about 8:00 EST we'll get you set up, if I've got enough time after our mission I'll try to walk you through a game as well. If it gets late we may have to push that back to another day.

Go ahead and download Hamachi also, we may or may not still have room on our managed network but if not we can still get you in one way or another.

Already got Hamachi, SSW, and Megamek...not a clue what I'm supposed to do with MekHQ or the MagnusPack though.

When you download the MagPack everything is already included. It uses MekHQ as a manager, but there is also a version of Megamek in that download as well which is the version we use. Different versions of Megamek will not connect to each other so when you get the MagPack extracted that is pretty much the only version we use any more. Don't worry about the actual MekHQ program for now, it isn't necessary for basic Megamek games or the ability to connect to the games themselves.

Got it. What year is the campaign set in? I like tinkering in the MegaMekLab but everything I come up with is just guesswork until I know what year and tech level we're working with.

3048 currently. The way it's set up, if you join in you'll have to buy a 3025-era mech and if you want upgrades they'll have to be purchased and installed which takes tech time and has a chance of failure (have to make a roll for each repair/modification).

Last I heard any incoming player has 4mil cbills to put towards purchasing their first mech. If that's not still correct then somebody please chime in.

3025 is good, but the 4mil C-bills is a little constraining. Gonna have to look around and see if I can find a good medium/heavy for that price. Was hoping for a Cataphract-1X, but I guess it wouldn't be BattleTech if we got what we wanted all the time. :)

Yeah, nobody's started out with heavies or anything like that. Lights or mediums for the first while, eventually you can save up or possibly salvage something bigger. Most of us right now are in mediums with a few heavies scattered here and there.

Cool, sounds like a lot of fun. Can't wait to see it in action. DHS/XL Engine, are they usable?

Definitely, all the Star League-type tech is available but again you can't really get a mech with it already equipped.
