My nephew gave me a new to me, videocard, it's called a gigabyte, and now I need a new powersupply to run it, according to bestbuy they think I need a 600w supply. I don't have one does anybody know a goode one for less than 60 dollars, or maybe have one laying around?
What videocard model, and what size power supply do you have now? You might be ok with what you've got.
gv n4600c1 g1 a gigabyte card.GeForce GTX 460 (this one) the powersupply is a 300w, HP standard supply in a kit computer (it was a student bought computer, so it came already built) the video card has two 6 pin connectors for power on it, but my power supply doesn't have any connectors to give it.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=100007657 600479295&IsNodeId=1&name=600W - 699W weeeee its been a while since i was on newegg. Link is for the 600 watt power range of things. Ive always found aiming slightly higher then your regs for things like videocard power is way way better then aiming too low on a power supply. Thermal, EVGA, and Corsair make really nice powersupplies. Personally i run Antec powersupplies because of technical reasons you aren't worried about (1200watt trupower ftw) but they are also much more expensive then say a coolermaster or corsair (both fine power supply companies). On Newegg sorting results by best rating is usually helpful. Lots of weekend warriors build newegg rigs and won't be scared to tell you what they really think about a piece of hardware. (yes i realize this isnt exactly what you wanted but at least it shows you what a brand new is worth verse someone screwing you)
yes, thats the price range i was looking at, but I am hoping for a lower price range, like 30's or lower
Newegg has them in that price range, but you'll most likely be buying another one in a couple months, and another one a couple months after that, and so on. I've done the el cheapo PSU thing, and I can tell you it just isn't worth it. Edit: I forgot to mention earlier, but you should probably check to make sure that a more powerful PSU will physically fit into your case. Sometimes dell/HP etc will use proprietary PSU's and an aftermarket PSU won't fit.
The bank made an error in my favor... I was able to buy the power supply I needed. and I was also lucky enough it fit! (If it didn't I would have had to glue it)
