Gohan managed and he's orders of magnitude stronger. Besides, if controlling his strength was a problem he'd constantly be breaking things and hurting people just doing normal everyday things. Really the only reason he wasn't successful is he's The Yamcha of the group. Turns out there's even a spinoff where some random anime nerd gets reincarnated in Yamcha's body and makes him successful solely by just not being Yamcha.

 

Because we all know some random otaku that never went through yamchas training is some how able to magically do everything... Because you know otaku can do everything.

 

He comes in right at the start of Dragon Ball so it's more like even some random otaku could be successful if he had Yamcha's powers.
