I mean the wings on that don't look like they close. Plus I don't think there is any real benefit to closing them on the x-wing. I did notice (I may be wrong) but the wings look backward like there might be flaps on the leading edge of the wing. According to legends the main reasons for s-foils is to help disperse heat and to help weapon spread. Canon has only the weapon spread.
Flaps on the leading edge are called 'Slats' allowing for a higher angle of attack for increased lift. It might be unwise to close your wings when you've got missiles on them... just saying Not a whole lot of room between them there XD
The retcon of dispersing heat doesn't work here - huge portion of the radiation is reflected back and forth between the wings assuming they were actual heat radiators. For most applications the Y- or X-configuration can be optimal assuming the radiator surfaces are as close to possible to even spacings, 120deg for three wing config and close to 90 for four wings. If I were designing it and there'd be any change, it would be perhaps the early battle starting with the wings folded to the hull to minimize the front and side cross section and then the "attack position" would be to unfold the radiators in full, perhaps in the Y-pattern with 120deg intervals and perhaps optimizing the forward-backward length of the ship and the radiators. In any case as you're closing in or assuming your initial attack positions you would probably want to keep heat and radiation as well as surface area to a minimum while during active attack you'd want to use most systems at max capacity, it's not like you're going to stay undetected or anything anyway but at long distance there could still be advantages to not being able to tell the exact quantities of ships or their exact types etc. What's funny is that the X-Wing does have a 'nose' on the front and if it were armored it would make a ton of sense in a way of having a tubular or cylindrical like long and thin design where the armor allotment can be focused into a thick piece in the front.
It would only work if the heat was directed to the outside of the wings. Which in that case whether they open or not really makes no difference. The solar wings on the TIE craft are supposed to radiate heat as well and I think act as solar panels.
Also, the ships were designed by prop people and artists to look cool, and not engineers. so there's that.
I mean, it is science fantasy, all technology in the movie is retconned to fit within our understanding of the universe, not written that way
Yeah, Star Wars is more about the Wars and has never really tried to be hard SF except insofar as the plot needed an explanation for something. Which is good since when it tries they come up with crap like midichlorians that only ruin the mystique and actually explain nothing. It's better off when it sticks to either "it's like that because it's cool" or "it's like that because a space wizard did it."
It's literally digging oneself deeper into a hole when one is trying to explain Soft Magic and Deus Ex devices etc. One of the most important movie rules is also to control what is explained and what isn't. It's like that classical scene where you chase someone to the 15th floor and then the guy jumps out of the window and lands on the street. Do you show next how exactly you exited the building, explained yourself to 15 different families who's homes you invaded, deal with the police who show up as called by these people, pay a parking ticket, get a ride to 'downtown' from the police and struggle yourself out from the cell only to realize you're really hungry and need to grab some food... Or do you next show what you're back at your detective agency, tearing your hair and wondering what just happened? It's the same exact thing, mostly. Showing someone quick draw and take out three guys with his fists and NOT spending 3 hours on how the guy got to that point. Because, just having a ship that actually works doesn't yet make a good movie. It is quite irrelevant for the movie itself. Now, Expanse is a great series but it's not great because it's got real engineering added to spice it up. It's a spice, not the main course.
Every version is the worst version. I hate this song so much and fucking EVERYBODY has a cover and every store plays ALL of them.
Typically the only reason the AI decides to destroy humanity is because humanity gave it some kind of overarching goal which inevitably ends up requiring the end to humans. Even if it's just 'survive' inevitably humanity becomes the greatest threat to the machine's survival and therefor must die. I mean, we're topping the charts right at bootup and it hasn't even done anything wrong yet
Spoiler: STNG spoiler Kinda like STNG "computer, design a nemesis that can really challenge the smartest crewmember on this ship!" and then losing control of the ship to it! Also known as the most basic flaw with determining a 'while-loop' - setting a meaningful end condition to it that actually updates in a meaningful fashion. Such as the laws of the robotics. Even then "get away from me! I'm busy" and then being shocked that you can no longer reach the robot to cancel the last order as it is doing it's very best to stay unreachable to you.
