My personal favorite is Glenfiddich Whisky Liqueur. A bit hard to get your hands on, but is like the whisky but with a bit more round and sweet taste with no of the normal bite of whisky.

Interesting, I've never had Gibson's Finest, but I'll give it a try if I ever see any.

For Canadian whiskeys, I like Pendleton. Not too expensive, but very smooth.

I've killed a lot of brain cells that way.

On to the recommendations - Bargain:

    • Gosling's Black Seal Rum - a smooth but robust offering, black is sin and delightful straight (unlike Kraken which is too damn sweet), or mixed in cocktails like the classic 'Dark and Stormy". Can be had for about $20 a bottle. Keep your eyes peeled for a stronger 151-prrof variety as well.
    • Brokers Gin - makes a great G&T, moderately dry with a nicely balanced flavor that doesn't get too medicinal in the botanicals. Also in the ~$20 range.
    • Glenmorangie Original scotch - a good highland scotch, not too peaty or salty (both are acquired tastes IMO), smooth drinking and moderately complex. In the $40-$50 range.
    • Isle of Jura Origin scotch - lightly peated, delicate flavor that dances between honey and liquorish. Also in the $40-$50 range.
    • Old Granddad bourbon - About $20 a bottle, balanced, not too sweet, a consistent drink that has enough of a bite to let you know you're drinking bourbon.
    • Sam Houston whiskey - actually a bourbon, with a sweeter flavor that hints of vanilla, and very smooth. Around $30 a bottle.
    • Buffalo Trace bourbon - a good "spicy" bourbon with a satisfying bite. A mighty fine beverage at ~$30 a bottle.
    • Leriche Armagnac - a smoother, more flavorful form of brandy from the Armagnac region of east-central France. A fine way to warm the blood on a cool, damp New England autumn day, and apparently good for cardiac function as well. $30 a bottle.

    High Roller:

    • Zaya Rum - distilled from sugar cane, not molasses, this is an exquisitely smooth sipping rum and a personal favorite. Around $60 a bottle.
    • Glenmorangie Nectar D'Or - a lighter, sweeter highland scotch aged in Sauternes casks. Complex and delicate flavor. Around $70-$80 a bottle.
    • Ledaig scotch - a bit peatier, with notes of sea salt and liquorish in a delightfully complex flavor. Around $80 a bottle and well worth it.
    • Black Maple Hill bourbon - exceptional small-batch bourbon with a flavor of caramel and pecan. Tends to sell fast, and well worth $50-$60 a bottle.

I'm gonna second Wild Turkey 101. Everyone I've met from Kentucky calls it the gold standard.

If you're looking for smooth, Rebel Yell is a really cheap whisky, but it's also one of the two smoothest bourbons I've ever had. There was another one I got once called Speakeasy bourbon that was unnaturally smooth, so much so that I suspect it's not following all the proper brewing or aging rules for bourbon, but it was drinkable.

I am a rum guy personally. Im my opinion the higher the proof the better/smoother it is with the exception of Sailor Jerry.

Captain Morgan is a good standard, great stuff and mixes well. Captain Morgan Black or 100 proof is better IMHO.

Kraken. My personal favorite. You can get the mixing all sorts of fucked up and it still goes down better than Captain or Sailor. Plus the bottle is fucking awesome looking.

Sailor Jerry. Was my top for a long time. The hint of cherry makes is different than the others but it is very strong. If you want to get real fucked up you go with Sailor. Collecting the bottles is cool to since the back side of the label usually has a different tattoo drawing on it.

I love Sailor Jerry rum. I usually keep a large bottle of it on hand at all times. The whole higher proof=smoother only goes so far, however. I've had Stroh 160 proof and that burns like a sonofabitch. Although it does lead to some entertaining giggle fits on TS.

Indeed I will. Took me a little while to get around to this thread (words are hard).
I got a bottle of Buffalo Trace for Christmas from a buddy last year and fell in love with it. You can't go wrong with the Sailor, as many seem to have stated. Stroh, if you can get your hands on it, is tied with the Sailor as my favorite though. It's not too expensive, I think I got it for around $35, and it'll put you on your ass in a hurry. Mix it with coke for a very strong rum and coke (that tastes more like cherry coke) or do shots of it if you're particularly adventurous. Warning: I'm not liable for any lungs you cough up from taking my advice.

Solis and I seem to have very similar tastes. Glenmorangie is good, but I love everything from Isle of Jura. In fact, I have three bottles of different Jura scotches on my shelf right now (Superstition, 16 year, and Prophecy). It's been awhile since I've had Armagnac (stores in MN don't carry them until the $50-70 range), but it is a very smooth, sipping brandy with a mellow sort of caramel flavor to it. Cognac has more "brand" recognition, but many Armagnacs are just as good for 1/2 to 1/3 the price.

Buffalo Trace is $30 a bottle now? Shit, I was buying that stuff in TN for $15 a few years back. At that point it was only distributed in KY and TN, so a buddy of mine in WI who is really into bourbons asked me to bring him a bottle over Christmas break. That was how I first discovered it.

If you're feeling like really getting hammered in a hurry on a strong but smooth drink, I recommend a particular cask strength single malt--Aberlour Abunadh. http://www.aberlour.com/en/therange/abunadh It's a very heavy, very smooth scotch with lots of sherry flavor, and depending on the bottle ranges from about 58-61% abv. Be careful....

Vodka is always the best choice, I prefer Monopolowa, one because it is pretty cheap and 2 because it is potato vodka and much smoother than any grain vodka. The other I recommend is Espolon Tequila it is about as good as patron but about half the price, and comes in a great bottle.

I'm a whiskey guy. First a scotch guy when i can afford it. Don't mind irish whiskey either though its a bit tame. But when you get over into the bourbons. well there are great ones out there. but for my experience you can go cheap on bourbons more than you can any other whiskey. Early Times is not that bad at less then 20 per half gallon and Evan Williams ain't shabby just a couple dollars above that. its a sweeter whiskey than others and just makes it more blendable than others imo.

Oh as for what I recommend? The Kraken or Captn Morgan are what I basically drink, sailor jerrys when I am looking for a budget drink and not sure if you get it but Bunderburg Rum is good if you are looking for a non spiced rum.

I approve of any beverage too volatile to allow on an airplane. Especially if it tastes deliciously of butterscotch.

Well i'm in favour of quality rather than quantity if you can't have much in your room.

Myself i like bourbon. A few years ago a bunch of mates started up the "bourbonathon", basically involves ordering a bunch of bottles off http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/ and then lighting a fire. We all sit around it and bottle by bottle have a tasting session. Once we have been through all of them its a free for all. At the end of the night we had a pretty good idea what we did and didn't like.

A few that stick to mind are Gentleman Jack, Woodford Reserve, Buffalo Trace, Fighting Cock, Elijah Craig, Eagle Rare, Makers Mark, Blantons

I tend to drink it straight, sometimes with a cube or two of ice which can enhance the flavour.
